How do I make my building designs more self sufficient? I am in my 3rd year of my Architecture class, and we are beginning to design commercial building designs. We were told to make it "green", meaning that they want me to design the building more environmentally friendly. How are some ways I can incorporate the "green" into my designs? (right now, we are designing a dentist office)

What is up with China, stealing military designs, and building up their military? I have been reading daily news on line, and the most I see when I type in military, is China building up their military. and based on history news, the chinese have been stealing military designs from the U.S. . I for one am getting concerned if they are planning something big, perhaps a confrontation with the U.S. and as an American I wonder with how thinned out our military is over the world. how would we tend to react if China attacked? how would the world react? who would join who? who has the greater advantages? and what are your thoughts on this? I have also read that China predicts a confrontaion will occur in 5-10 years. what do you think about that?

what is the software that is used for testing building designs? i have seen it used for testing like what happens in the case of earthquakes and such or just testing if the design will work period. i am thinking of becoming an architect and would like to get this software.

How much does the Channel 4 TV show, Grand Designs, pay for filming building projects? I am interested to know what percentage of the costs are payed by the programme. All the filmed projects are extremely ambitious. They all hit huge unforseen problems and go way over time and budget. Yet the amateur builders seem so unconcerned. Is this because they know they will be well covered by Channel 4 for any overspend. The disasters that occur are probably what makes them such interesting material for the programme drawing in huge numbers of viewers. Well worth paying a lot of money for I should think.

I want to build one day, despite people's objections; I'm an Architectural Draftsman and feel the desire to live in a house I designed by me; has anyone ever done so; I've heard and met people who have but not of their adventures through their project. What is it like? Was it worth it? I would like to build in the country side; semi-rural: it snows up there. I will be living alone w/ pets. I would like natural building materials such as stone, timber; even concrete masonry units; would like a basement and attic; two story structure; of the Italian villa style/cabin or contry cottage.
