Can you just go to your city real estate office and ask for existing building designs? I'm making 3d walk through design for a friends commercial building he's building ground up, I've got residential design examples out the wazzu to work from, but I was wondering if it was out of the question to ask the city for the blueprints of a popular sportsplex building in the area. I'm sure in a post 9/11 world they'd be a little on edge by giving out this info but is it still possible?
What is the scale factor of the office building to the model? An architect is designing an office building that is to be a width of 50 feet, a length of 50 feet, and a height of 100 feet. A scale model of the same building is to have a width of 18 inches, a length of 18 inches, and a height of 36 inches. I got the ratios 50:18, 50:18, and 100:36 but I don't know where to go after that.
How do I make my building designs more self sufficient? I am in my 3rd year of my Architecture class, and we are beginning to design commercial building designs. We were told to make it "green", meaning that they want me to design the building more environmentally friendly. How are some ways I can incorporate the "green" into my designs? (right now, we are designing a dentist office)
Where can I find super insulated home designs? I want to build a super insulated kennel/barn/shop/office building using elements of passive solar design and any other energy efficient design elements. The kennel/stable requirements lead me to think that the slab on grade structure should probably have concrete walls for at least the first four feet.
How do you charge for designs and bids? My company designs and builds custom furniture and cabinetry. We also design offices, libraries, trophy rooms, and all the interior millwork. How do we recover some of the many hours of work involved to give a professional bid? On the jobs we contract, its part of the job. It's the ones we don't get or the ones the potential client uses to go with someone else.
I am designing a green building. What are the steps to achieve that? IN our architectural design office. We are handling with a client where he requires a green building. The location is Chennai in South India. The Temp is about 25'C in winter to 45'C in Summer. It is a coastal city and has population of 10Million. The water availability is scarce. Provide me steps to attain the green building nature in this scenario
What would be the best CAD software for dental office design? Information I would have beforehand would be things like the dimensions of the land to be built on and the number and what kind of rooms the building would need. The program needs to at least be able to do floor plans of a dental office, but I would like to be able to expand later and be able to do things like plan a heating/AC system and maybe do some architectural planning.
Anyone know how much it costs to build this building? The building is a complete glass exterior with a modern design. It is 10 stories tall and each floor has about 6 000 square feet of usable space (for offices). The Building has 3 elevators. The interior will cost about 2million US $ (since this is an office building, companies must basically furnish their own office). Let's exclude the land, how much would the structure and building fees (architect, engineers, permits...) cost?
what are the career options for a structural engineer? I know structural engineer can work for design offices, building departments, construction companies, teaching at schools...I have been working as structural engineer for almost five years and am doing my career planing. Any insight would be very appreciated!
Is designing and building your own home difficult? Is it any different/cheaper from buying? I want to build one day, despite people's objections; I'm an Architectural Draftsman and feel the desire to live in a house I designed by me; has anyone ever done so; I've heard and met people who have but not of their adventures through their project. What is it like? Was it worth it? I would like to build in the country side; semi-rural: it snows up there. I will be living alone w/ pets. I would like natural building materials such as stone, timber; even concrete masonry units; would like a basement and attic; two story structure; of the Italian villa style/cabin or contry cottage. I would love to do some painting up there and have a library and home office; a car shed, two-car garage; and a room for my collections of items of the history and weoponry; I would like the house to be a family freindly home: to gather relatives in times of reunion or yearly tradiditon, having for them rooms to stay the night(s).
what is the standard color coding for office waste disposal in America? I'm building an office waste disposal centre in Mexico City. The recycling or disposal in the office is limited to batteries, (employees are encouraged to bring in batteries used at home), paper and toners. I would like to add to the design the appropriate colours for each one of these category. Any one can help me? Thank you.
Why does everyone you know want defective building frames? Building frame materials are always strong, tools to assemble building frames are great, the assemblers always work hard and are dedicated, the designs are always approved, the current reinforcing systems carry Patents, yet storms, seismic activity, floods, and fires are always destroying buildings, and more importantly, what's inside of the buildings! A majority of the victims of these destroyed buildings are not Terrorists, yet when a new innovation that proves that buildings won't fail in the storms, etc; there's always an excuse for turning down the stronger resulting building frames! Cost increases/cost reductions are both major turn-down "reasons" expressed in a recent survey as for non-interest in Continuous Reinforcing Systems, a proven new method of wind-proofing buildings. Continuous Reinforcing is a change that leads to many additional improvements and new features to and for your home, school, or office. They take the defects out of the frames and solve building seams!!!
Who do you complaint to about no space for the disability when you visit doctors' office? For example: I went to this medical building to get some lab work for my husband. He is in a wheel chair. When you go into the entrance, you have to go zig-zag through the aisle of the poles. Then there is no room to park the wheel chair as we wait. Another lady her wheelchair was wide to where she was blocking the walk-way, but she had no other place to wait, she had no choice. Another lady had a walker, she had hardly no space to get through the aisle. This office wasn't design for the disabled, they didn't take this into consideration for the handicapped.
How to setup my office professionally? Hello, I'm a young business owner "under 25", and my business is growing FAST! I went from 2 employees to now 16 employees within the place 1 1/2. I recently had to buy a new office building Down Stairs has 4 offices which will be turned into open space and one office for a break area. But upstairs has a Studio Apartment which I'm going to turn into my office + conference room. What is the best way to setup my office? I regular have Government "military" clients dropping by and I just want it to look professional what is the best way to design my office? My brain lacks designer skills? I want to give it a "green" appearance btw. Sorry about the typos FireFox........ The break area has a bathroom for Male/Female works. The receptionist desk is in the front at the main door. The main reason upstairs is my office is well I have a small daughter that I sometimes take to the office with me and it has enough room for her to play and stay out of trouble. It also over looks my entire facility and this is important.
A lot of money to spend on building a new Graphic Designer's home office for myself. Whats the best stuff? I have a lot of money to spend on building a Graphic Designers home office for myself. I need help with figuring out the best PC (not Mac), tablet laptop, and Monitor(s) to purchase. I have everything else I need but these 3 items are stumping me. I like the HP Core i7 Desktops and HP TX2000 series tablets for drawing. Anyone out there a graphic designer that can help? No photo editing just intense Web Design, Illustrator, and Photoshop work.
Fast Track Building Construction? My project is a multistorey office building made of steel structure and concrete slab floors. External facade is not yet decided. Internal layout is partitions. My question is : What possible design decisions can be taken to speed up the construction process?

Help on a Geometry math question? An architect is designing a contemporary office building in the shape of a pyramid. The building will have eight sides. What is the shape of the base of the building?
Physics? EASY QUESTION!!! 10 points QuIcK!!? If temperature is measured in C and heat flow rate is measured in cal/sec, what are the units of thermal resistance? The thermal conductivity of a material depends on a) thickness of the material b) type of material c) temperature difference across the material d) surface area of the material An architect designs an office building with large windows. Each window has length L, width W, and thickness deltaX. How can the architect reduce the heat flow rate through each window? a) Use a material with a higher thermal conductivity. b) Increase L and/or W. c) Increase deltaX. d) All of the above. You are asked to design a network for the branch office of your company. You have to provide the list of hardw Branch office will have 15 users, each user will initially have 2GB of data, office will also have a centralized library of 80GB to be accessed by everybody, usernames/passwords will need to be managed centrally, users must be able to log on to the network from any of the workstations and still see their data & settings, network will need connection to the active directory in the main office, users will be processing word & excel documents and browsing the internet. Data has to be backed up regularly. Users must be able to log on in case of server failure. You have to roll out the network, all computers will be located in 3 rooms, there will be server room approximately 30m from the user places. There is ADSL connection coming to the office building. You want to make sure that you can administer the network (server & router) remotely from the main office. Also you want to make sure that internet is accessible only to certain users and all http requests are logged. You are also told that the new office frequently has power spikes and outages, though they usually last no more than 1-2 minutes). Main office currently has active directory and Microsoft ISA 2004 server acting as firewall/proxy. Please specify the list of hardware (servers, workstations, storage, backup, network equipment, cabling etc) as well as software (operating systems, office software that you’ll put onto each machine, and server software for the servers). Specify technologies you’ll use and models you’ll choose and give valid yet concise explanation for your choices.
would you rather be an architect or building surveyor? i just finished my master in architecture and cant get a job because there isn't much going around because of the flat pace of the construction activity. but i am not sure if i want to pursue a career as an architect now the more i am looking into it. reason; 1. majority of the time it is an indoor job sitting in front of the computer all day drawing up someone else's design. if it is a small office then it can get quite boring just chit chatting to small number of people. 2. unfortunately, it isn't as high paying most people that don't know architecture make out to be. 45k when your a graduate, 90k after 9 or so years. ummm, while i have been studying i have been getting 2/3 of that at my warehouse job. 3. a lot of hours and effort which seems to be the norm and usually not compensated for it. however, because of the creativity and the freedom of the imagination to come up with something i could really enjoy it. besides, spent 5 years at uni doing it i loved it. but i think there is more to life then architecture and there has to be that life balance and money plays a big part in that, unfortunately. but i am wondering if there are other alternatives? well there is. there is a law change happening in WA for building surveyors and every firm here are anticipating to be inundated with work and under staffed. i have rang 4 companies and each one of them got me in for a chat and encouraged me to apply for a trainee-ship later this year. with my educational background one firm is offering 80k for a trainee-ship position! all said in few years of experience the earning potential can be extremely high. much higher then architects. ok the money is one thing but the work is another which i think is more suited to me. reason; 1. always out and about on different sites talking to a lot of people. 2. are involved in design teams and see projects from start to finish. 3. get to tell architects what to do. with reasons in their designs so building surveyor is still in the same field as architects but its a completely different role. it can get quite dry since its all about meeting requirements of the legislation and building standards. but i like the idea majority of the time mingling with people and still get appreciate good architecture. so, i don't really know what to do. i like the idea of being an architect and design some cool buildings but in reality only small majority get to do that and it takes a lot of years to get to that level. most famous architects are well past in the older years and majority of architects are on middle income wages. and building surveyor there is more demand for it but then there are its cons about the job. so just wondering if anyone has any experience in both fields and would like to share their experiences
Building Relations With Clients? Hey guys I've been made reponcible for the topic of "Building Relations With Clients" in my work place (a design office full of engineers and drafties). Any suggestions for ways to increase familiarity between us and the client? Some suggestions were team sports, calling them more, lunch meetings etc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :).
What kind of architecture is an open building? Gonna try to explain this as best I can. You know certain hotels or large office buildings where you walk in, there's a lobby or some such, and it opens up to, say, an atrium with artificial ponds or trees and a restaurant, and you can look up and see all the way up to the roof, usually where a skylight is. And each floor is a balcony winding all the way around that looks over the middle. If anyone knows what I'm trying to get at here, what's the architectural term for a design like that? I'm trying to find out more about it.
How would I get this? Hello,I'm sixteen and I want to be an architect (I know you hear this everyday lol), I want to design buildings and have them come to life for all the public to see. I'm interested in home design, but I would really love to design/build buildings more in public. I should also note that my interest isn't necessarily designing/building like office building and such, even though I would, my interest more leans toward unconventional public places (like where people would go to view art or any type of thing like that. For instance, I had this idea of a completely glass art observatory for art where you could post you art on the walls for free and have the public see them, it would be about 6 floors high and have an underground exhibit (it's hard to explain lol), I think it would help a lot of people get their art career off the ground). I'm not trying to be picky but that's just what I like. Anyway, I was wondering how to make the first step. I'm currently in the process of obtaining my GED (because I was always homeschooled). I live close to a community college but I'm not sure if it could take me anywhere? Basically, I know what I want, I just don't know how to get it yet. Can you help me out? Thanks Ps: I want to make it clear that I want to be an architect, not participate in the physical building of the structure. thanks!
Improving office environment - physically? My cubicle was set up in a back corner of our office building, where there are no windows (it was once a filing area). This would be fine, but the majority of the fluorescent lights in this area have burnt out or flicker, and maintenance can't fix them (the size has been discontinued). The ones that are left are an odd yellow-orange colour. I find it very difficult to read documents and I get headaches. I also don't have any plugs to plug in a lamp (again, this wasn't designed as a workspace). Are there any products that I could buy to improve the lighting situation? I'm supposed to be moved in the next 3 weeks - we're just waiting on another staff member's retirement.
Prices for amateur page programming - parts and labor? I'm not a professional programmer or anything, but I know enough HTML and web design to make basic web pages. An acquaintance has asked me if I could make a web page for his local business, an office building cleaning service. Since he wants me to put in the time to make it a good, professional looking site to market his company, he wants me to bill him. I want to give him a price that beats what he could get from a professional service - that's the whole point of him coming to me with this - but is still fair for me. Any suggestions?
class essay dont delete? David Solórzano Ceramic Engineering Field Report Ceramic Engineering is the technology of making and using of ceramic materials. Many engineering applications benefit from ceramic materials. Ceramic materials have gained attention from engineers around the world, including: Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and many others. Ceramics are resistant to heat, and can be used for many tasks that other materials like metal and polymers can't. Ceramic materials may have a crystalline or partly crystalline structure, with long-range order on a molecular scale. Glass ceramics may have an amorphous or glassy structure, with limited or short-range molecular order. They are either formed from a molten mass that solidifies on cooling, formed and matured by the action of heat, or chemically synthesized at low temperatures using the solution/precipitation technique known commonly as Sol-gel. The special character of ceramic materials gives rise to many engineering applications and ceramics have attracted the attention of engineers in electrical engineering, materials engineering, chemical engineering and mechanical engineering. As ceramics are heat resistant, they can be used for many tasks that materials like metal and polymers are unsuitable for. Ceramic materials are used in a wide range of industries, including mining, aerospace, medicine, refinery, the food industry, the chemical industry, packaging science, electronics, industrial and transmission electricity, and guided light wave transmission. Introduction Ceramic Engineering is the technology of manufacturing and usage of ceramic materials. Many engineering applications benefit from ceramics characteristics as a material. The characteristics of ceramics have garnered attention from engineers across the world, including those in the fields: Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and many others. Highly regarded for being resistant to heat, ceramics can be used for many demanding tasks that other materials like Metal and Polymers can't. Ceramics, in addition to being a fine art, also requires a thorough working knowledge of certain materials. Whether we need to design a new office building, or a vase for our bedroom, we need a ceramic engineer. Someone has to figure out our creative designs into a reality and here walks in the engineer. A ceramicist joins ceramics and engineering and helps us to create new and more interesting works with new materials, which we can’t, even dream of. The multibillion-dollar ceramic industry converts processed materials and raw materials taken directly from the earth (clay, sand, etc.) into such useful products as spark plugs, glass, electronic components, nuclear materials, abrasives, rocket components, and even tableware. High-temperature processing is the key to ceramic engineering, and the products are always inorganic, nonmetallic solids. Job Prospects Ceramic Engineers experienced in both scientific and production aspects of the profession may also work as administrators, project supervisors, sales engineers or technical consultants to firms using ceramic materials. Many Ceramic Engineers work in the nuclear field, as ceramic fuel materials make nuclear power generation possible. The electronics industry is a growth area for this technology, as ceramics are used as insulators for transistors and integrated circuits. Refractory ceramics are required in the refining of iron and aluminum, and this industry is especially in need of this type of worker. The exciting new field of fiber optics has had a dramatic effect on today's telecommunication and medical industries, and since ceramic components are used, Ceramic Engineers are playing a vital role in this new science. Ceramic Engineers experienced in both scientific and production aspects of the profession may also work as administrators, project supervisors, sales engineers or technical consultants to firms using ceramic materials. Nature of Work CERAMIC ENGINEERS help to develop varied products as protective tiles for space shuttles, ceramic fillings for teeth, Unbreakable dinner plates, and sophisticated telescope lenses. Ceramics have applications in virtually any industry, which demands the use of heat-resistant materials. Ceramic Engineers are specialists in the study of these materials, their behavior, application, and use. They develop methods for processing nonmetallic inorganic materials into many ceramic products ranging from glassware, fiber optics products, cement, and bricks, to coatings for space vehicles, materials for microelectronics, components of nuclear fuel, and pollution control devices. Recent advances in physics and chemistry have expanded the applications of ceramic engineering. The major functions of Ceramic Engineers are Research, product development, and production engineering. Architecture Computer Program? Hi, I am looking for a good architecture computer program. I design kennels and dog daycares, and need a program that has different flooring and walling options, as well as can build half walls. A program that can do office design can work as well. I can use a program that does home designs as long as they have many different options as far as materials go. Any suggestions? Something that is somewhat easy to master as well. Thanks! Also include a link where i can purchase if possible (ie: amazon, circuit city, etc).
The construction designed to improve cities fortress like Afghanistan? The city building designed with a whole infrastructure, education and teaching of philosophy at strategic points in the Arab countries that are at war would diminish the number of conflicts in the Middle East? These cities would be designed as fortalezam that would welcome people who wanted to join the new government in Afghanistan, but it would be easy to govern with some models of these cities, and soon the emails cities imitate these cities, the big problem would be the place that religion should get a center and discussions of philosophy, I believe it would help in the pacification and acceptance of new local government. The question is not who governs but how to govern, if their leader is one or the other ethnicities is not important but take care of the people and their education and development. what is there is a minority that makes terrorism and people who suffer sluggish, with fortified cities fortified strongholds like cities could do the patrol and internal security with caution and a Hostens patrolling outside, and a host of cities oppressed population forts to have quality of life, and later with the new education could be used in public offices and the military.

can any help me in designing of my office, i mean any architect or any person intersted in making home plans? friends, i am running my own computer center in punjab, now i want to build a new building for it, i have a plot size of 30feet*40feet. i can spend near about 4or 5 lacs upon it, but just 2 lacks now and the total amount after it. can any one help me to design the map, i need one lab, two theory room, one rest room, and m office, i want to build a basement for my personal swimming pool, if any architeft is here please mail me at hi_lovegirls@yahoo.com if you are professional i can spend a little money on designing also, but pleasse help me
Is it mandatory for a building to have a elevator? i am designing a cafe with a ground and a 1st floor. Am not sure if it has to have a life, if so what are the minimum sizes. Uk building Also am i missing and rooms that should be in the building? I have the cafe, kitchen, shop, Wc, office, Staff area and changing room, Thanks
Cost of building a house - question for professional builders? I'm moving soon to Northern Wisconsin possibly, and I'm trying to figure out if I want to buy, or build. I haven't considered building until recently (I have found nice houses, but none that I'm "In love" with), and I'm trying to decide if it would be cost effective for me. I'm looking into a 134'x140' double lot... at $14,500 At minimum I'm looking for a single level home with: 2 master sized bedrooms 1 guest bedroom 1 small office that can also be used as a spare bedroom Finished basement. 2.5 to 3.5 bathrooms. one master bath attached to the master bedroom (with spa bath and corner shower), one full bath for the other larger bedroom, possibly a full bath in the basement and a half bath somewhere in there. Medium sized kitchen that is open to the dining room and living room. Hardwood floors through out the house with decorative tiling for bathrooms/kitchen access from the house to the back yard where a dog run can be attached. high ceilings spacious entry way Possibly a sun room. I understand that you can not give a price based on what I explained since there is so much that goes into building and designing the floor plans.., but if you can think of a house you possibly worked on that is comparable to what I kind of described... I would appreciate it if you were able to tell me roughly what that house was cost wise to build. (I can live without the office/bedroom space, the sunroom and the half bath... so maybe what you think it would cost with and without those extras.) Modular homes I've seen when researching them are not that nice. They look nice from the outside, some from the inside even... but they're not well constructed. They tend to have a lot of problems... I have a friend that lives in a prefabbed house who is unhappy too... no no prefabbed or mod houses. It's either going to be a regular build, or I'm going to add onto a house I found that I kind of liked, the change it into the house I can love... Of course I have to find someone who does additions that can come with me to the final showing and let me know if that's even possible. I just wondered if it would be economical to build the house I'd love, than to buy a house I like and add on.
What can you do with a vibrating floor? We're a design studio in New York City, and our office is in an old factory building turned office. Our downstairs neighbor has installed a big air conditioning unit, and about half of our floor is impossible to sit on, because of the vibration it's causing. It's not a violent vibration, but if you sit on that area, you'd feel seasick after a while. Does anyone have any suggestions about what to do? We hear carpet might help. What other options do we have? A platform on top of the floor? Thanks very much for your time!
What defines buildings as Architecture? Ever since my Architecture professor introduced this question to me last semester I have been going around in circles with one of my classmates as what defines a structure/building as architecture. The general consensus from most of my Architectural Major peers is that suburban 'cookie cutter' style homes are not, and should not, be considered as Architecture. Most of the arguments against defining tract housing as architecture is that, since each individual house was not specifically designed with a specific surrounding environment and client in mind, it is not considered architecture. What they were saying was that, since the designers of the homes were not exactly putting into consideration the exact location of the house and the people who are going to be living in that particular house when they were drafting the home, it should not be considered architecture because the particular house they designed was mass produced and just scatted across on a plot of land the home building company purchased. My argument for saying tract argument is the fact that architects of large complexes like fancy hotels and skyscrapers also implement this type of thinking when they are designing their structures. For example when an architect is hired to design an office building or a Las Vegas hotel that is 40 stories high many of those levels are identical and just replicas of one general floor plan with slight variations. Just like someone who designs a large residential division in which one home design is just replicated many times over with slight variations. With this reasoning why would homes in many suburban areas not considered architecture ex. (KB, Discovery, Pulte Homes) But large complexes with many identical parts/levels are considered architecture (Empire State Building, Caesars Palace)
Brick building design? I am roughly designing a brick building (machine shop), it has an 15 ton overhead travelling crane with the rails mounted on the walls. The building is approx 30-35 feet tall inside to clear objects over a railroad car, approx 175 ft long by 40 ft wide. It has an 18 ft wide by 125 ft long "lean to" office machine room etc attached to it and is open on the side adjacent to the roundhouse almost its entire length supported by H-beam columns. This could be closed in if necessary with a large door opening (20 ft wide by at least 12 ft tall always open). It also has a steel angle iron roof structure with pressed tin roof on a 4 in 12 pitch. I know this question is probably way beyond the scope of this website and I know I will have to consult an engineer to get it exactly safe and in-code. I plan on having pilastered walls to help with the load bearing of the crane and arched doorways and windows instead of concrete lintels. My questions are, how thick should the walls be between the pilasters, how thick should the structure supporting the crane rails be, how thick should the pilasters be, and how far apart should the pilasters be placed? I am also having a hard time figuring out if the crane rail should be placed on an I-beam running on top and between the pilasters and/or a brick structure. The middle of the building needs to be open if at all possible. I have a basic concept in my head of how it should look and understand basic load spacing, building design and functionality. I have seen similar modern steel structures with columns about 14-20 inches wide spaced about 12-15 feet apart holding about the same weight. Engineers and people with experience in this field please help! This is for you.

can you please help with this math problem about architecture? an architect is designing an office building that is to be a width of 50 feet, a length of 50 feet and a height of 100 feet. a scale model of the same building is to have a width of 18 inches a length of 18 inches and a height of 36 inches .. 1. the entrance into the office building is 8 feet high by 7 feet wide find the height and the width of the entrance on the scale model. round your answer to one decimal place.. 2. two windows on either side of the main entrance measure 3 inches wide and 2 inches high on the scale model. find the height and the width on the actual building. round your answer to one decimal place.. 3. you want to add a window over the entrance to the building.. determine the size that you want the actual window to be.. then find the size of the window on the scale scale model.. i'm confused and i dont know how to solve these last three problems ..
What can I expect if I build a house without a building permit and/or not to code? I intend to buy a 50+/- acre parcel of land in rural Texas (montgomery county) and build a house on in by myself. I know that building codes are designed to keep people safe, and I intend to roughly follow the guidelines for family's safety. I however feel that if I am free to live in a cardboard box that is not built to code, I should be able to live in a home that is not built to code. I also feel that as an American I should be free to build my own house the way that I want to. Granted this is a rural area and the guidelines shouldn't be too strict, I still do not feel compelled to go to the government office and ask permission to build a house on my own property. I also do not feel like being told how I can & can't build my own house. I know that I won't be able to insure my house, & I know it won't be worth anything if I decide to sell it, so what I'm wanting to know is if criminal charges can be filed against me if I do not obtain a building permit & if I refuse to build to code. I would also like to know if my land tax will be less if my house is not built to code, therefore not considered a "house".
Business Law Question? 1) Matt, an attorney, had a client who was injured in the automobile accident and was being treated by DR. Smith. Matt orally promised to pay Smith his medical fees out of proceeds of any award made to his client as the result of a lawsuit based on the accident if the client did not the fees. When the client was awarded 15,000 Matt refused to pay Smith , invoking the statue of frauds. Can Smith legally hold Matt liable for his oral promise to pay ? 2)Mike, an architect , signed a contract with Mary to designed an office building.Nothing was said in the contract about size, style , or maximum cost, only an estimated cost. When the bids for the building came in , they were so much more than the estimated cost that Mary decided not to build a building..She also refused to pay Mike for his services. In court, Mary tried to introduce evidence that there had been conversations about maximum costs.Mike claimed that this was not possible under the parol evidence rule . Is Mike correct ?

And the interior could of been better designed. But interesting home all the same.
How much per square foot should cost to build a commercial building in Toronto? it is a round glass building, with concrete base. Each floor has 25,000 square feet. The first floor will be ONLY one huge salone with average interior design (no rooms; only one salone). The second and third floor will have offices with nice interior design. (I'm looking for the Price of Engineering, Material Procurement and Construction)
Mel Gisbon did it: How Is This Possible..? In the Film Conspiracy, Mel Gibbson's character Jerry Fletcher outfittied his appartment to self-destruct? WHen his apartment is raided he set it ablaze. But the rest of the building was left unharmed do to fire-containment systems he set up. Is it possible to rig an apartment or office in such a manner? Can an apartment or office be designed to self-destruct like this (destroy the office/apartment without damage to rest of the rest of the building)? And yes I know it was just a movie but is this possible, contained incineration in an apartment/office? Sorry for typos FTYI, I don't plan I doing this but was curious at how possibly this concept is?
Building plans anyone ?? Hey structural/civil engineers out there, I need some help from you.. I am doin my MS in UK in Structural Engg and its almost done..just dissertation (project) to be done. My topic is 'Design of Steel Frames' and my supervisor said to me that I can either come up with my own building plan or take plan of any already existing building and carry out my project. To make my project more realistic I want to work on, or rather re-design, already existing or under-construction multi-storey building. So if any you practicing engineers work on steel buildings and such design offices, could you lend me the drawings please? Ofcourse the source of the plan would well be referenced in my project record. Also, if you know any websites from where I can get plans, it would be much appreciated. Thank you and look forward to hear from you guyz (and gals too :) )soon.
Help me with my math homework... 10pts to best answer!? A stained glass window for the entrance of Matt's new office building is to be designed by Stacey. Stacey decides to design the window in the shape of a rectangle capped with a semi circle. The perimeter of the window is to be 30m. The price of the stained glass is $9.75/m squared. Determine the total cost of the glass required for this window to have a maximum area?
Will Obama have to take out Ford to get rid of the competition? Since Ford didn't take gov. money Obama has no control over them and Ford is in position to make GM and Chrysler look bad since they are being run by government idiots (Just imagine the Post Office running GM:). Ford will still be building cars people actually want and Obama Motors will be trying to get you to buy gov. approved designs (lol) so how long will he let Ford exist?
Expenses eligible for income tax deduction - profolios building expense for job search and side business? I am a graphic designer. I have a full time job, work for an advertising company, from 9-5. I am seeking for a better job opportunity, also want to get side business for graphic design. I have started to build my portfolios for these purposes. I have bought a new PC, a new camera and a new desk in late 2007 to work on my portfolios in the evenings and weekends. My intentions are (1) Job search - present the portfolios to my potential new employer, (2) Side business - present the portfolios to my potential clients to work on side business. The protfolios building will be done soon in March/April 2008. I do not have any clients yet. Questions: A) Will the PC, Camera, new desk expenses be eligible for income tax deduction? I use the PC, for 20% personal usage, the 80% is devoted to the graphic design to build my portfolios. The camera is 100% dedicated to the graphic design. B) If I could deduct the expenses, what tax forms do I use, and do I need to separate between job search and business expenses? C) What about the home office expense, I also bought a new desk in my study in 2007. Can I deduct a portion of my rent, utility, phone, supplies, that are dedicated to my study room? Thank you very much for your help!
What procurement route would building a private airfeild be and why? Scenario: You are a Chartered Civil Engineer and you have a Client. This Client has plans to build a flight school and private airstrip on the outside of your town. They have obtained planning permission. The works includes a runway, apron, a hanger building with office / teaching space and parking spaces. The land is generally good though it is marshy in some areas. Would this fall under design and build or traditional procurement?
The restaurant below our business is smelling up our office. What can we do? Our office is above a restaurant, more specifically, an annex for a restaurant across the street. Our office is on the second floor and there is a full kitchen below our space. The restaurant likes to cook their chicken base or stock a few times a week in their space below ours. Despite the kitchen being ventilated, we routinely experience a very strong odor of grease, chicken, etc. Imagine working in a kitchen that just made a big thanksgiving meal. The building that contains both our business upstairs and the restaurant downstairs is owned by one person. He leases both spaces. We have complained about the smell to the landlord (owner) and the restaurant owner and staff. Despite our polite requests nothing has changed. Are there legal precedents for issues like this? I'm fairly sure there has to be a division between a business space and a restaurant space within a common building. To be more specific, our office is a graphic design firm. We have clients coming to our office and we obviously need to be presentable and professional to conduct our work. When our office smells the way it does our credibility and professionalism get thrown out the window. Our space is located in Oklahoma if that helps narrow down any legal issues. What can we do? I should focus my question perhaps. Moving is not an option in the short term. What legal requirements does our landlord have to abide by to keep the two spaces in our building truly separate? An odor surly cannot travel from once space to the other and go unpunished by the causing party. Are there requirements in real estate planning or law that state to what degree a landlord must provide such a division between spaces that each tenant is not affected by the other?

would this building survive a earthquake.? by the way The world's tallest building has been opened with a dramatic fireworks ceremony in the Gulf emirate of Dubai. The Burj Khalifa was revealed to be 828m (2,716ft) high, far taller than the previous record holder, Taipei 101. Known as the Burj Dubai during construction, the tower has been renamed after the leader of Dubai's oil-rich neighbour, Abu Dhabi. Last month, Abu Dhabi gave Dubai a handout of $10bn (£6.13bn) to help it pay off its debts. Construction of the Burj Dubai began in 2004, at the height of an economic boom. Clad in 28,000 glass panels, the tower has 160 floors and more than 500,000 sq m of space for offices and flats. This great project deserves to carry the name of a great man Sheikh Mohammed The tower also lays claim to the highest occupied floor, the tallest service lift, and the world's highest observation deck - on the 124th floor. The world's highest mosque and swimming pool will meanwhile be located on the 158th and 76th floors. Technical challenges The opening ceremony, held 1,325 days after excavation work started, was attended by some 6,000 guests. Though not complete on the inside, it was officially opened by Dubai's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Burj Dubai The Burj Dubai dwarfs its neighbouring buildings In a surprise move he renamed it Burj Khalifa - after the president of the United Arab Emirates and emir of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahayan. Sheikh Mohammed described the tower as "the tallest building ever created by the hand of man". "This great project deserves to carry the name of a great man. Today I inaugurate Burj Khalifa," he said. Sheikh Mohammed also unveiled a plaque inside the tower bearing the new name. A dramatic fireworks and lights show took place around the tower while a screen displayed its exact height, which had previously been kept secret. At 828m, Burj Khalifa dwarfs the 508m Taipei 101 and the 629m KVLY-TV mast in the US, the tallest man-made structure. Its spire can been seen 95km (60 miles) away. "We weren't sure how high we could go," said Bill Baker of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the building's structural engineer. "It was kind of an exploration... a learning experience." Mohamed Ali Alabbar, chairman of Emaar Properties, the developer behind Burj Khalifa, told the BBC that the building's design had posed unprecedented technical and logistical challenges, not just because of its height, but also because Dubai was susceptible to high winds and was close to a geological fault line. "We have been hit with lightning twice, there was a big earthquake last year that came across from Iran, and we have had all types of wind which has hit us when we were building. The results have been good and I salute the designers and professionals who helped build it," he said. BURJ KHALIFA IN NUMBERS Man stands on Burj Dubai observation deck 95: distance in km at which its spire can be seen 504: rise in metres of its main service lift 57: number of lifts 49: number of office floors 1,044: number of residential apartments 900: length in feet of the fountain at the foot of the tower, the world's tallest performing fountain 28,261: number of glass cladding panels on the exterior of the tower In pictures: Building the Burj Khalifa Tower: facts and figures The design incorporates ideas from traditional Islamic architecture, while the open petals of a desert flower were the inspiration for the tower's base. Burj Khalifa will be home to 1,044 luxury apartments, 49 floors of offices and eventually a 160-room Armani-branded hotel. Around 12,000 people are expected to live and work in the tower, which is part of a 500-acre development. However, investors are facing losses even before the tower is completed because property prices in Dubai have slumped amid the global economic crisis. Some apartments were selling for $2,700 per sq ft, but are now going for less than half that. Analysts say it will be particularly hard to lease office space because few companies can justify paying premiums for luxury. The BBC's Malcolm Borthwick in Dubai says developers are holding back on new flagship projects, so Burj Khalifa could mark the end of an era for skyscrapers in the Gulf - at least in the short term.

Why do people who own SUVs drive them like glass carriages? Aren't SUVs designed to be rugged and take "anything" on the road? You may own a piece of crap car (like me), ready to fall apart, yet willing to drive on anything neccessary to get to work. It is YOU who actually needs a SUV. Not the metrosexual guy who leaves his 300K house, in debt to his eyeballs and no furnature, in his SUV. He goes to work in a clean office building. Never gets his hands dirty and nevers uses the SUV other than to go to work or go clubbing.
Can you help me build the right computer? I design homes & offices using the program Chief Architect. The performance of the program is ''okay'' but movement is somewhat jagged and not everything works correctly. I would like to build a new computer but don't know what is the best hardware for the job. Gaming machines aren't an answer. What is the best video card, cpu, motherboard, etc., for creating a pc that will give me top performance in rendering & operation of house design software? $3000 is the most I can do for now.
Can anybody tell me what is this about and please revise this I need to say this in my own words and in differ Orientation" As a potential employee, I would be utterly disturbed. As if trying to retain all of the overwhelming information the narrator has given me isn’t stressful enough, my potential co-workers would certainly worry me, as well. To me, there are many unusual things in this story, but there some of the things described are characteristic of the workplace. While it is common to experience relationship drama and to have work benefits, it is not likely that serial killers would be allowed in the workplace. It is also strange that the narrator knows so much about everyone’s personal lives and daily habits. It seems as though the narrator’s own job is gaining expertise in his own workplace and co-workers. I have never experienced such an odd orientation for any job or other function. The speaker must have worked this job for a number of years. He is either extremely serious about his job or trying to scare the potential employee out of working there. The layout and design of the office building, as vaguely described by the speaker, seems normal with side-by-side cubicles and various compact offices. The people, however, make this office seem out of the ordinary. Some of the rules and regulations that are enforced in this office also seem absurd. For example, the speaker in forms the potential employee that employees “are allowed to heat food in the microwave oven,” but “are not, however, allowed to cook food in the microwave oven.” This policy just makes no sense to me. If the employees are allowed to use the microwave, what’s so different about cooking the food than heating the food? Is it because cooking the food would take much longer and use a greater amount of energy? The speaker gives the orientation almost as if he is trying to frighten the potential employee. If the potential employee abuses just about any of these policies, he may be let go. Furthermore, the office employees all have unique stories, which the speaker knows all about; this aspect of the office is the most unusual. Overall, the office seems to be set up as an ordinary workplace would be, but the interesting employees within the office make the orientation exceptionally peculiar.

Microsoft Office 2003/2007? was wonder can you run Microsoft Office 2003 in Windows Vista or do you have to upgrade to Office 2007?? The main reason I ask is I use FrontPage where I built and maintain a website and Windows decided to stop building it and replaced it with SharePoint Designer and Expression Web. I'm not currently hooked up with SharePoint (have no desire to since I maintain my own website myself) so can't use SharePoint Designer and Expression Web is too basic for the likes of me... I have used Macromedia/Adobe Dreamweaver before but find FrontPage to be a better fit for my needs. Anyways has anyone seen the new Office 2007, their new design looks a bit stupid and more complexed especially with a ribbon replacing taskbars. Another thing, what's the deal with some programs in Office 2007 such as Publisher, that's got the taskbars like in the 2003 version???

Barn Designs? We just bought a 7 acre farm that we plan to keep our two horses on part time. (weekends and during school breaks). Anyway, we are looking at putting a small barn on the property. Right now I am looking at doing a set up with 4 stalls, a wash rack, feed room and office/tack room. So my questions are as followed: Are there any features that you love about your barn that might not be the norm? What materials would you build a barn out of or is your barn built out of? (Treated lumber ect) Types of flooring? (concrete, asphalt, clay ect) Likes/dislikes? What stall designs or set up do you/your horses prefer? What is better health wise? Any info/opinions are greatly appreciated! We are (of course) going to get professional help with building the barn but I want to know the little extras that make barns great. Also if anyone is bored, make up a barn design (with layout and measurements) and e-mail it to me. (jazzme2305@yahoo.com) I would love to see what yall come up with!

What are some good examples of Multi-Use buildings? I'm a Architecture student and we were assigned to design a 4 story multi use building for downtown. The upper two floors are to be used for at least 4 apts., the 2nd floor is office space, and the first is a retail space. I was wondering if any one knows of any good buildings like this that I can use for precedent.
Should your workplace have tolerances built in, so reliable work can be done even if an office psychopath ...? ...joins the organization. "Big systems work the same way an electronic device works, tolerances for variances are factored into the design. So even if some of the components deviate from the absolute value, the device as a whole still functions. If every component in your TV set was expected to retain its original manufactured value, and was designed under that assumption, it would last about about an hour, depending on the ambient room temperature" To bondy, Terrific insight. Thanks.
Are human beings more aggressive than animals? Man must be the most aggressive and cruel of all living creatures. We may say a violent man is behaving "like a beast", but, in fact, no beast behaves as violently as man. When a territorial animal or bird intrudes on the territory of another creature of the same species, the latter will only perform some hostile gestures to warn off the intruder. Nevertheless, should a fight follow, neither creature will be badly hurt, for the loser will save himself by making a gesture of submission. Normally one animal will only kill another for food, and rarely does an animal kill a member of its own species. 2 If, however, an animal finds itself in abnormal conditions, it may show abnormal aggressiveness. A tiger that once came out of the jungle into a village and attacked a man was later found to have an injured paw that had evidently prevented it from hunting its usual prey. If it had not had this disability it would have undoubtedly stayed in the jungle and hunted for food in the customary way. Animals in zoos are kept in cages and often become more aggressive than they would be in the wild. If the caged lion, for example, were free to wander on the grassy plains of Africa, it would be continually active, ranging over long distances, hunting in family groups. In the zoo it is probably better fed and cared for, but it is evidently bored and frustrated for lack of company. 3 Some zoologists and psychologists compare modern man to a caged lion. Living conditions in crowded cities, they say, are similar to those of animals in a zoo and make the inhabitants unusually aggressive. If the human population had not increased so rapidly, people would have had more space and freedom. In prehistoric times a group of about 60 people had many kilometres of empty land to wander and search for food in. If conditions had remained thus, man might have been no more aggressive than his fellow creatures. As it is, it is possible for as many as 30,000 people to be working in a single office-building. It is not surprising if in these conditions people behave aggressively towards each other. In fact, it is almost impossible for them to behave otherwise. Man must have become more aggressive over the years as the world population has increased. 4 However, aggression in itself is not necessarily a bad thing. Some psychologists believe that aggression is a basic human instinct that must be satisfied. If constructive means are not available to satisfy this instinct, man will turn to destructive means. The impulse to assert himself has enabled him to survive in a dangerous world, but, ironically, he is now likely to destroy his own species unless alternative, non-violent ways of expressing aggression can be found. In fact, it is growing more and more difficult for people to assert themselves as individuals, as towns, nations and organizations become steadily bigger, with authority increasingly centralized and remote. A man who may once have been a self-employed craftsman, master of his own trade, might now have a boring job in a factory. A small firm that once worked as a team to produce high-quality goods is likely to be absorbed into a vast organization where their work is mechanical and there is no possibility for personal expression. Unable in these conditions to channel their aggression into creative work, people will probably express it through resentment and anger. At the international level an accumulation of hostile emotions finally finds expression in large-scale impersonal warfare. A man who would hesitate to hit another person in front of his eyes may kill thousands of people by dropping a bomb from a plane; to him they are too remote to be human beings, but are merely figures on a chart of his routine job. 5 Nevertheless, it might be possible at least to improve the situation. The encouragement of competition in all possible fields should tend to diminish the likelihood of war rather than increase it. In his book Human Aggression, Anthony Storr suggested that the United Nations should organize international competitions in sports and also for the best designed house or hospital, or the safest car. Even the enormous amount of money and energy devoted to the space race is, he says, to be welcomed, for this kind of competition can be regarded as similar to the ritual conflicts of animals. Only if hostility and aggression can be expressed in constructive activity and non-violent competition, will the human race be able to survive.
There are annoying anti-war hippies right out side my office. Why don't they respect my right to work in peace So about 50 hippies and other... ummmm interesting people code pink, answer, a guy with a sign that says no war for oil (he got out of a big SUV btw) are outside my office in San Jose protesting... I guess they don’t realize that this building houses accounting and graphic design firms. But they are outside in orange jump suits and holding signs that say "Stop torture". I don’t have access to the top 8 floors but I am sure there is no torture going on here. Now I have been watching them for a few minutes, why are the same 3 cars driving in circles around the building honking the horn? Is it to look like people actually care about their idiocy? Do these people have jobs? Or are they paid to annoy accounting firms who deal with businesses not the government? Should I go to their jobs and annoy them? Actually from the looks of the crowd, few actually work. Should I go out side and practice my right to flip them the bird? Anyone in San Jose want to join me? More info... Awww they gone and gave up... poor hippies. Trust me I don't have to ask if they have jobs, it is VERY obvious that most do not or have a job where they don't work with the general public. No I am not an accountant; I work for an accounting firm. I am more like an event coordinator... sounds weird, well it is. BTW apparently People missed where I said they have a right to protest, but I have a right to be left alone. They can waste all the time in the world as far as I care, just let me work in peace. I just wish I had a camera. And I did give them the bird. Open your eyes: LOL, take your name's advice and go read my profile. I have a lot of gay friends who would luagh thier butts off at your comments. By the way, great proof that liberals are open minded, kind and loveing people. Pityful angry little people make me luagh, thanks. Ummm actualy woudn't me going to work count as the right to peacably assemble? I mean after all I am gatheirng together with like minded people to accomplish something. by them disrupting us, is that not infringing on my rights? See I can interpret the law too suit my views and opinions as well people.
Minimum beam dimension? What is the provision provided by the ACI code for the minimum beam width? Can i use 200mm width in beam design for a three-storey office building?
How do I design a computer network for a school? I'm taking a network and configurations class, and the final project is to build a school in which I design the computer network. I have to show a budget for all materials etc. I just dont know where to start. I'm not sure what I need to build a net work. My planned school will be pretty small, maybe 10-12 classrooms, and of course offices and stuff. We dont have to specify the types of computers, the focus is more on the network setup, wiring, wireless, access points etc. Anybody got a clue where I should start? Maybe a good tutorial site? Thanks! EDITED DETAILS: (THE CLASS HAS ONLY MET ONE TIME, IT IS JUST BEGINNING. I AM A NEW STUDENT TO AN ALREADY FORMED COHORT. FOR MOST OF THE STUDENTS, THIS IS THEIR LAST CLASS. THIS IS ONLY MY 2ND.) I AM NOT LOOKING FOR A "FREEBIE" OR FOR ANYONE TO DO MY WORK FOR ME. I AM JUST LOOKING FOR SUGGESTIONS, TUTORIALS, ETC. THANKS!)
Negligence Liability in building collapses? Now that a better building frame reinforcing system is available, and since this reinforcing meets and exceeds Construction Codes minimums, and that building Designers and Contractors are not adopting this reinforcing system, can they be sued for negligence in the event of a building collapse that would not have occurred with this new frame reinforcing? The new type of reinforcing is called Closed-Nets, and can be found on the websites: http://www.dubephnx@tor-eggs-torclosed-nets.org ; and TOR-EGGS-TOR DESIGN SOLUTIONS with CLOSED-NETS. Announcements about this new system has been forwarded to local and national News Stations, Architects, Engineers, and Building Contractors and Trades Organizations and Associations, Congress and the White House Administration, several State Governor's offices, the U. N; Newspapers, and construction-related television shows, etc. Closed-Nets are listed with Tor-Eggs-Tor Design Solutions/Randy Lee Dube, and are Licensed & Registered in U. S.
Why is the U.S. building its largest (104 acres) and most expensive ($592 million) Embassy in Baghdad? The massive new embassy, being built on the banks of the Tigris River, is designed to be entirely self-sufficient and won't be dependent on Iraq's unreliable public utilities. The 104-acre complex — the size of about 80 football fields — will have 21 structures, including two office buildings, one of them designed for future use as a school, six apartment buildings, a gym, a pool, a food court and its own power generation and water-treatment plants. (The average Baghdad home has electricity only four hours a day.) - IBarbara Slavin, USA TODAY. Additionally, Llewellyn Werner, chairman of C3, a Los Angeles-based holding company for private equity firms, is pouring millions of dollars into developing the Baghdad Zoo and Entertainment Experience, a massive American-style amusement park that will feature a skateboard park, rides, a concert theatre and a museum. It is being designed by the firm that developed Disneyland. - Pamela Leavey, The Democratic Daily What's up with that?
Does this sound like the likely action plan for Obama's first 100 days in office? 1). Drop the "Obama" and change his name to Barack Hussein, or simply "President Hussein." 2). Erect a statues of himself in Times Square, New York and also in front of the Pentagon, White House, and Capitol Building in Washington DC. 3). Install a new floor design in all federal public buildings (courthouses, post offices, legislative offices etc) that bears the design of the American flag so anyone stepping into the building will have to walk on the flag. 4). Round up all the Republicans in the House and Senate and charge them all with treason. Execute them shortly afterwards as traitors and publicly praise the democrats for their loyalty. Hold new elections for all open seats that only include democrats. 5). Grow a beard. 6). Develop and stockpile chemical and biological weapons. Use the existing stores to gas all Hillary Democrat voters and their supporters, as well as all existing red states. Bury the bodies in mass graves. 7). Instal a new entitlement program for suicide bombers in Palestine that pays their families $50k a pop (no pun intended). 8). Change his first name to "Saddam."

How to design a LAN bet. the main office and branch office in another city? Scenario: Main building: a router and either 2 or 3 switches for Grp1=40 users, grp2=20 users, grp3=4 servers to occupy different flrs of the bldg. Branch office: a router and a switch w/ 20 users. The router from the main bldg is connected to the internet. Required: to design a simple LAN that will connect to the internet. Observe all standards; you pretty much assume aother things that will come to play. I need help, I have just started networking class!!!

Business related to Detailing drawings, designing, CAD work fm UK, Architectural/ Civil/ Steel fabricators? We are at New Delhi India, we do lot of back office work for Architectural/ Civil/ Steel fabricators, contractors from US and Canada, specially detailing drawings, designing, tracing work( CAD- conversions) and ADT work. India is cheaper in man hour rates, and the quality of work is also as per international standards because we use x-steel, CAD to prepare the designs and the designs are as per the International Building Codes. I am just bouncing the Idea across to you, in case you come across any such work or you have contacts in Constructions Industry, Architects, or any steel fabricators we can jointly do this together. If intersted do write back.
In architecture: public vs private? I am making a public vs. private diagram for a building I have designed and am confused about what actually qualifies for which category. The building is part office/part residence. The residence is on the upper stories while the public office is on the lower floor. When making the diagram, should I make the entire residence as "private" and the office public except for the restrooms and mechanical room? Or should I designate the living room/kitchen etc of the residence as public and then the only private spaces would be bathrooms and mechanical rooms? Also if I have a private office which connects to an outdoor terrace... is the terrace private as well or are outdoor spaces always public?
Anyone who works in the Fashion/Clothing brand Company, I need advice on careers? Hi I'd like to know what kinds of jobs there are working for a fashion/clothing company, whether typical everyday brands such as Gap, Banana Republic, DKNY or designer brand companies such as Ralph Lauren or Marc Jacobs. I want to do something involving fashion but not completely (as in not designing or anything like that). I'd like to have an office and work in a corporate building. I know there are jobs like that, I just don't know what. PLEASE HELP! Thanks.
Covering large built-in shelving with fabric? My bedroom is a converted office, with two huge floor to ceiling shelving units (built in). I want to use the shelves for clothing storage(as there is no closet), but I want to cover them with fabric. I have a light green, asian inspired comforter, and light green/dark brown curtains(almost a "crushed" look). Any color and design ideas? It will cover 2/3rds of the second largest wall, with a 3 foot wall in the middle.
I discovered this article on the yahoo home page & i think its a very good ideal will you participate also? Pass this message out to as many people as you can.Make me wonder why i haven't heard about this on the news sounds like everyone would want this. NEW YORK - On Sept. 11, Jacob Sundberg of San Antonio has pledged to make eye contact and smile at everyone he meets. Kaitlin Ulrich will bring goody baskets to the police and fire departments in and around Philadelphia. And 100 volunteers from New York – 9/11 firefighters and family members among them – are going to Groesbeck, Texas, to rebuild a house destroyed by a tornado last December. ADVERTISEMENT This is a minute sampling of the hundreds of thousands of people who have pledged to memorialize those killed on 9/11 by doing something good for others. The heroic acts of all those killed trying to save others that September morning has spawned a growing grass-roots movement. The goal is to ensure that future generations remember not just the horror of the attacks, but also the extraordinary outpouring of humanity during the days, weeks, and months that followed. "It was the worst possible day imaginable, and in some ways, a remarkable day, too, in the way in which people responded," says David Paine, cofounder of myGoodDeed.org. "We need to rekindle the way we came together in the spirit of 9/11: It would be almost as much a tragedy to lose that lesson." Sept. 11 has inspired dozens of philanthropic efforts – from groups dedicated to building memorials to foundations designed to improve education in the Middle East. But myGoodDeed has a more universal goal: to turn 9/11 into a day dedicated to doing good – from small, simple things like Lisa Scheive's pledge to help stranded turtles cross the road in Pompano Beach, Fla., to lifesaving efforts, such as John Feal's decision in New York to donate one of his kidneys to help a seriously ill 9/11 worker. The idea has been endorsed by members of Congress, and at myGoodDeed's urging, President Bush for the first time this year included a call for volunteering in his annual 9/11 proclamation. After major disasters, Americans have historically tapped a deep reserve of compassion and reached out to others. But in the months and years that follow, those compassionate and civic urges tend to recede. Studies at Harvard's Saguaro Seminar on Civic Engagement in America found that in as few as five months after 9/11, most Americans had gone back to their daily lives and were not more engaged as they said they'd hoped to be. Part of the goal of turning 9/11 into a national day of service is to remind Americans of the inherent joy of giving and to hopefully spur volunteering and charitable acts throughout the year. "I don't know of any research that's been done on one day of service, but studies have shown that people who do volunteering in high school are more likely to volunteer throughout their lives," says Thomas Sander, executive director of the Saguaro Seminar. The idea of turning 9/11 into a day of service, charity, and good deeds came from the family and friends of one man: Glenn Winuk, a volunteer fireman and lawyer who worked a block and a half from the World Trade Center. After he helped evacuate his Broadway law offices, he grabbed a medic's bag and ran toward the smoke pouring from the South Tower. That's where his remains were found after the towers fell. Mr. Paine and Glenn's brother Jay had been friends for years. They decided that turning 9/11 into a day of service was best way to memorialize Glenn. "It completely reflects the way my brother lived his life, and it also specifically reflects how he died," says Mr. Winuk, myGoodDeed.org cofounder. "He laid his life on the line for other people that day." In 2002, Paine and Winuk sent e-mails to friends and family and suggested they do a good deed, such as donate a day's pay on 9/11. Then the idea evolved, and they founded myGoodDeed.org. In 2004, 100,000 visited their website and pledged to do a good deed on 9/11. This year, those pledging number more than 250,000. "A lot of people don't know what to do on 9/11," says Paine. "This hits people in their heart and their soul. It connects with something that's fundamental." Where are all the engineers? I have always wanted to be a engineering technician preferably working with electrical/electronic/computer technology but missed my boat due to illness.I am about to enrol for an access course to HE which will get me in to university to study engineering.I am practical and technical minded,'hands on' kind of person and enjoy doing this kind of stuff(as mentioned above).I have now opted for an engineer's route as opposed to a technician's as engineers are better trained, schooled and have to deal with greater challenges not to mention better prospects(no offence to technicians). So what exactly do engineers do apart from designing and building stuff?Do you sit in an office and design things in front of a computer and do you get to do a variety of diffrent jobs or is it routine and tideous work?Compared to an average technician, how hands on do you get? Sorry if i come across as misinformed.Your help will be highly appreciated. I am interested in electrical, electronics, computer, avionics, mechatronics and robotics technology/engineering. The collapse of the Twin Towers, Part II: Can the Conspiracy Theorist Debunk this? The impact was one of the largest contributing factors to the collapse. It's the part conspiracy theorists like to forget when comparing these collapses with others. The impacts caused real trauma to all three buildings. (Two airliners into the towers and debris from the north tower for building 7. The building 7 impact is another one conspiracy theorists like to forget) The impacts obviously took out many perimeter columns in the towers. The towers had a number of floors destroyed from about the perimeter columns to the core. The impact sliced the aluminum aircraft into smaller pieces but the speed of the craft also sliced through the steel like butter. The impacts also spread jet fuel into the buildings. Not all the fuel was used in the fire ball. In fact, eye witnesses say jet fuel was creating curtains of fire as it poured down from the impact zone. But the jet fuel only started the fires. It was never the NIST's contention that the jet fuel brought down the buildings as conspiracy theorists suggest. Conspiracy theorists use this as a straw man. They say the jet fuel couldn't have bowed the columns and sagged trusses. Just as lighter fluid doesn't cook your meat in a barbeque, the jet fuel didn't sag the trusses or bow the columns. You also can't leave this important factor out either. Conspiracy theorists say the columns couldn't have bowed and the trusses couldn't have sagged because the jet fuel wasn't hot enough and was used up within about 15 minutes of impact. That's like saying your meat didn't cook in your barbeque because the lighter fluid burns too quickly. All the jet fuel did was act as lighter fluid and intensify the fire for about 15 minutes. The impact brought a 500 mile an hour wind to the impact floors as a wall of debris traveled from one end of the buildings to the other. The jet fuel blast added to the event with more than just a pyrotechnic show. This high wind (debris and blast) blew the debris into the furthest corners of the building. It obviously stripped the ceiling tile system off in an instant. Photographic evidence shows no sign of ceiling tiles on the impact floors. In that same instant the all important "blown on" fire proofing was removed from the trusses and some columns. This could be seen from photographic evidence in the NIST report. The NIST also replicated the fireproofing and conditions during impact and found the fireproofing easily blew off. As with all the NIST tests anyone can replicate them if they doubt the conclusion. Click on the photo to see a larger image. Conspiracy theorists will point to Mrs. Cintron waving by column 134 as evidence the fires weren't hot. But it's absurd to suggest she was there during the impact. It's obvious SOMETHING protected her and she made it to where she is to wave for help. Even if you think a missile hit the towers, something must have protected her. Apparently, all critical thinking skills go out the window when conspiracy theorists see her. As if the fires behind and above her must be cool because her location appears to be. Another of many logical fallacies suggested by deniers. [Wind as in air that moves... Believe it or not, conspiracy theorists have attacked the word "Wind" as if I was saying an absurd weather front moved into the towers. It seems that if they don't take the words out of context they can't attack it. Another absurd point was made about the airliner having air pressure on its leading edge as if the plane was intact as it ripped through the building.] The load was redistributed to the remaining perimeter columns and hat truss system over the core. The design was truly robust and prevented the building from crashing to the ground early. The building was left wounded and on fire but not dead. Unknown to anyone who was used to the typical office building fire, the building was mortally wounded. Just like a wounded animal left bleeding, the towers' fate was sealed. emergency funding to restart non-profit after fire destroyed building? My all-volunteer national non-profit organization was destroyed after a gas-leak caused a fire which burned down the building (with me inside...) Everything was destroyed... I need start-up funds to get it going again. This is a family service non-profit organization which provided free services including a free online magazine.... all files and programs for webediting and graphics are gone. Even donations of web editors and graphics programs would help, if even temporary volunteers to help reproduce materials, website design, etc. Temporary donation of space from host for website would help. Any office equipment such as fax and landline funds would help. Any type of office equipment such as desktop computer, copy, scanner, paper supplies, etc.
this site wants to install the following add-on: Microsoft Office XP? I design websites for a living and have built many. Recently, working on www.skytargets.com, and typing the URL, IE7 warns me: This site wants to run the following add-on: Microsoft Office XP. I have not written anything to ask for that! Where does that come from and how to get rid of it? This happened after I changed the site to use AJAX (Sajax to be more precise), but it does not happen on other sites designed on the same principles! ... So, it is not "written" in javascript: The javascript portion stays on the client, and all requests go to the server, treating everything in PhP. The "body" tag only contains a single division. After first request, the page division is remade into several, each one "updatable" separately without refresh. There is no mention anywhere of need for Microsoft Office. Editor: just Notepad (and FTP).
