Also, is there any website that will allow me to design a home or building on-screen? In the future i am planning to build a mall or a business complex and to some extent, residential areas. Home building designs, & CAD programs? I'm looking for a CAD program to build and design a fourplex, but I want to find a CAD program that also shows an approx. Cost, prefferably a CAD program that integrates real-world areas/prices for supplies. free program for windows xp of 3D home designing and building? i am looking for a 3D program that i can use to build and design a future home, and it has to be free cause i don't have the money to pay for that... but its just something i can use to help build a house when the time comes. i would like it to have a 3D model of a home and also use as blue prints and floor plans... this would really mean a lot if i could find a program like this that is free for when I'm ready to bring this dream to reality

Is designing and building your own home difficult? Is it any different/cheaper from buying? I want to build one day, despite people's objections; I'm an Architectural Draftsman and feel the desire to live in a house I designed by me; has anyone ever done so; I've heard and met people who have but not of their adventures through their project. What is it like? Was it worth it? I would like to build in the country side; semi-rural: it snows up there. I will be living alone w/ pets. I would like natural building materials such as stone, timber; even concrete masonry units; would like a basement and attic; two story structure; of the Italian villa style/cabin or contry cottage. I would love to do some painting up there and have a library and home office; a car shed, two-car garage; and a room for my collections of items of the history and weoponry; I would like the house to be a family freindly home: to gather relatives in times of reunion or yearly tradiditon, having for them rooms to stay the night(s).
New build home Design Center Upgrades? Which ones improve the homes value? I think I got a great deal on a new build home. Now it's time for the landscape, wiring, and design center appointments. I'm cool in all areas except the design center. Light fixtures, faucets, etc, I can do myself. Is it smart to upgrade the counter tops, cabinets, sinks, etc (major items)? The costs of these items are rolled into the price of the home at closing. OR should I wait until my finances permit and do them myself? The only thing I'm sure on upgrading is the carpet pad.

Where can I find super insulated home designs? I want to build a super insulated kennel/barn/shop/office building using elements of passive solar design and any other energy efficient design elements. The kennel/stable requirements lead me to think that the slab on grade structure should probably have concrete walls for at least the first four feet.

What is the normal length for a builder to start building a home.? We went with a design/build builder. He finally finished designing our house. He has taken forever to get prices on the different areas to build our house. It seems like he has put us on tha back burner. I have told him this and he assures us that he is working diligently on our project. His prices also seem sort of high on some things. What is going on? We do have the permits and loan already done. We are building a SIP home. Should we maybe right out a timeline for the building of the different phases of the house and have him sign it. He has given us a timeline, which is already behind. We have not sign on with him for the building phase. I like him as a builder because he is letting us do a lot of work ourselves and letting us contract somethings on our own. A lot of builders we talked with will not do that. We paid for the permits ourselves and got them ourselves. Why?

How far in front of a home bar should tile go for seating? I am in the process of designing/building a home bar in our basement. Most of the basement will be carpeted, but the area behind the bar and immediatly in front of it will be tiled. My question is how far in front of the bar needs to be tiled to comfortably allow for people to sit in bar stools placed on the tile surface?

Is it that much trouble to build a home from scratch? I am in the market for a new home but can't find a ready-made house that has everything I am looking for. Having a house built from scratch is really the only way to have all my specifications met, but friends and family who have had their houses built in the past all talk about how horrible their experiences were (mainly with the builders). Is it really that bad? Also, is it significantly more expensive to build a custom-designed home than a regular cookie-cutter one?
I'm building a super efficient SIP home in cold Vermont, we want a range hood, how much cold air will come in? We are building a home using Structured Insulated Paneling and radiant floor heat. Most of our choices have been based on "what is the most energy efficient choice?". Our kitchen design incorporates a range hood vented through the wall. The builder indicates that this is an invitation for cold air as there will just be a flap separating the kitchen from the outdoors. How much am I compromising the air tight house to have a range hood? How much cold air will come in through a standard range hood? How well does a ductless range hood work? HELP
What can I do to combat my contentious neighbor who stops at nothing to thwart me from building on to my home? I am a father of two small children who doesn't make a lot of money. I have saved all my life to build a home for my family. Six years ago, when I was single, I bought a small house and an adjoining lot in Philadelphia. A wonderful wife and two beloved children later, I now want to build an addition on the lot for my growing family, the design of which is completely within zoning regulations. But I have a contentious neighbor (whom no one on the street likes) who showed up at the local "neighbors association" and somehow managed to convince the board to put a stop to everything and send us back to the drawing board. Our next meeting with the neighbors' association is days away. I know this contentious neighbor is going to return and object again. What can I do to keep her from thwarting my efforts? I'm just trying to make a home for my family! Is that so wrong?

How much would architect design fees be for a 3br/3ba off-grid home in rural Central California? My husband and I are planning on building a second home on a very long-term basis. This home will most likely be where we'll retire to. We'll have to do this in stages for financial reasons. We're planning on buying a large piece of rural property, and having a well-planned, mostly-to-fully off-grid home designed that is simple but beautiful and not too large (between 1800sf - 2400sf). Is this a crazy home building idea? I had this Idea today to build a real house in modules that can be moved easily. And even removed and relocated easily should I ever want to. I don't have land and I don't want to buy land until I can plop the house and studio that I want on it. Is it a crazy idea to go about it this way? I know I can do it and do all the work myself...electrical plumbing...roofing everything. People are going to say "buy a kit home" or buy a removable home or bungalow and have it moved. But I really want to design a home that is exactly what I need and purpose built with a darkroom and photo studio and horse area's. Anyway I just want to get some opinions....If I can build now....and then buy the land and just move it...i think it would save heaps of money. What do you think?

Ever heard of building a machine shed (metal building) and making part of it your living quarters? I want to buy a home, but my boyfriend wants to buy land. We can't afford to buy land and build a house. He says it's really cheap and convenient to build a "machine shed" and actually design your home inside the building. I've seen a house that is actually a working barn and the family just lives in a decent sized portion of the barn. It looks totally normal on the inside but from the outside, it's just a barn. Has anyone ever heard of this?
