Green Building Designs Knowledge Base
I am designing a green building. What are the steps to achieve that? IN our architectural design office. We are handling with a client where he requires a green building. The location is Chennai in South India. The Temp is about 25'C in winter to 45'C in Summer. It is a coastal city and has population of 10Million. The water availability is scarce. Provide me steps to attain the green building nature in this scenario
How do I make my building designs more self sufficient? I am in my 3rd year of my Architecture class, and we are beginning to design commercial building designs. We were told to make it "green", meaning that they want me to design the building more environmentally friendly. How are some ways I can incorporate the "green" into my designs? (right now, we are designing a dentist office)
What green building system has the best thickness to r-value ratio? I am designing a hypothetical multi-story building in Toronto, Canada. The site is 15' wide, which means that I need a thin wall with an amazing r-value. I also cannot use wood frame construction. What building system, from exterior to interior, can I use to have the best r-value to wall thickness ratio, while still being able to support 4 stories of concrete slab flooring.
how is building green unethical? what ethical issues are there with building green? if you don't know what building green is, check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leadership_in_Energy_and_Environmental_Design Is there any problem in designing GREEN BUILDINGS???? What could be an ethical issue here.
Can I hire students to design and build an (affordable) green house in CA? I wonder if it is possible to hire advance students to design and build a green (and affordable) home. I'm thinking about a shipping container house and find someone who can lay out wiring, plumbing, septic, isolation, etc. Do I need certified professionals in California to build one? Thanks so much for your answers.
How do I get grants and investors for a new business? I have designs I have been working on for over 20 years. All my building designs are green earth projects and I need help getting going.I also have designs for NASA but don't know who to contact or how to get things going.

Anyone know how to work as web like as social network with black screen on green words? You knows what I am trying to say like this movie "The Social Network". Mark Zuckerberg worked his computer with black screen on green words to build web in the movie but I want to work like he did on "black screen with green words' every codes he works. How would he do that? Where can I find this black screen so I could work in my computer? Help me, I am very motivated to work for my web design to build. Thanks!
can anyone name building or architectural companies that focus on 'green' or out of the ordinary homes? i am interested in the design of property such as layout and style, but more so, sustainable buildings and 'different' styles of homes. kind of like grand designs. unique homes but in the main 'green' homes in the way they are designed/ operate etc. i am looking for some names of companies that are in this kind of sector?? and also, what would you class this kind of sector ( designing sustainable and unique 'green' homes? many thanks xx
going green and building a tiny house? I am interested in going as green as possible and building a house similar to the Tumbleweed Tiny Houses. I don't want to buy their set of plans when I want to make my own design. Are there any good websites, books etc on easy portable architecture? I'm really just interested in the materials I'll need and what-not, so it doesn't fall down. I've never done construction by my grandfather was a master woodworker and architect, any I am pretty good at building things, it's in my blood. So, where do I start? http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/
Anyone good sources for Articles About Ecological Architecture ? I am searching for a very good researched artikel on sustainable design and Green Building. I want to get good 2nd hand sources for my thesis in school. Also a good and well known architect hwo is specialized on Green Architecture would be good. Thank You Guys
Who should design my green/eco friendly home 30 Ml west of Portland, OR? We want to have built a solar/green/eco friendly home about 30 miles west of Portland, Oregon, in the country. I need an architect who is not too fancy and doesn't overcharge, but is competent, has contacts, experienced, and good ideas for folks who choose not the mainstream but something beautiful and unique. We want the house built only to sheetrock as we want to do much of the inside/finishing work ourselves. We read Mother Earth Mag and like the back-to-basics things we see in there. We would rather have quality than quantity and love the wood/rock/metal combination with earthy tones. Budget is $200,000 max including permits, etc. Already have well, electricity, and septic on site.
LEED requirements and their explanations? (Green Building)? I would like to know the requirements of getting a building leed certified but most importantly i would like an explanation of what those requirements mean. for example i know that the Sustainable Sites Credit 2 (development density and community connectivity) means that one needs to choose a site within 400 meters of 2 bus stops, trains etc. and to agglomerate as much people in within the same space as possible. But im missing explanations like the one above for the following categories. WE - Water Efficiency EA - Energy and Atmosphere MR - Materials and Resources IEQ - Indoor Enviromental Quality IDP Innovation in Design Process
Does anyone have good information on low cost/green building materials and construction? Searching for good detailed information (+ & -) for low cost building materials from someone w/knowledge/sources. I am interested in anything you can come up with such as: geodesic dome, earth bags, cob, straw bale, rammed earth, concrete, & bamboo construction. I have already done some research online, but I haven’t found a good means of comparison & accurate/complete cost estimations. I am also really interested in safety ratings of the various materials & whether it is extremely important to do the build in an exact/specified way. The goal is to purchase land & build a 3 bdr house for around $60K. I have friends who would be able to pitch in for manual (unskilled) labor & several who have worked in drywall & finish carpentry. My father is a civil engineer, so I am hoping that providing him with the needed information would allow him to assist in the design. I live in Kansas so the construction materials would have to be good for cold, hot, humidity, & high winds/storms.

democratic national committee? DRAFTING AL GORE ??? In the past Al Gore as a candidate has frustrated me. I thought that he paid too much attention to pollsters and conflicting advisors, and failed to heed his own convictions. He knew that the environment is the most important long-term concern that this nation faces (pollution, global warming, energy resources, topsoil erosion, etc.), but he was afraid that the American people would not listen, or that he would be tarred as an out-of-touch policy wonk. Now things have changed. The nation seems to be spontaneously greening. The big oil companies tout their green energy programs; evangelical Christians are going green; architects win prizes for their green building designs; large companies spontaneously are capping carbon emissions; environmental organizations are finding new clout (witness their influence in the recent $45 billion buyout of the energy giant TXU in Texas); people are buying hybrid cars; trying to reduce waste, recycle, and compost. We have a long way to go as a nation, but it is becoming obvious that the people (the electorate) are way ahead of the politicians. A critical mass may be coalescing. A sea change in public thinking may be on the horizon. Major cultural changes don’t happen until the time is ripe. That is why I believe that it may be time to draft Al Gore for the Democratic 2008 Presidential race. I don’t believe he will aggressively seek the nomination and confront Hillary. But his recent Oscar for “An Inconvenient Truth” has undoubtedly stoked the old fires of political ambition. Gore is smart and articulate, deeply comprehends foreign and domestic policy issues, and will be a shrewder campaigner than before. And he does have a dry sense of humor. Hillary remains a polarizing figure. Obama is young and inexperienced. Gore is unquestionably the best-qualified individual on the scene today to lead our country out of the current morass. What sane person would today want the daunting job of U.S. President? Gore is indeed sane, and if he can be persuaded to run, our country will be very fortunate. Let’s try to see that he is drafted. Please join me in discussing him with progressive influential friends, forwarding this e-mail, or whatever you can do to get the ball rolling. We owe it to our country – to our children and grandchildren, -- and to our planet, which is our only home. Neal Chandler, March 2007
Building a "green" house: what elements to incorporate? For a school project (AP environmental), we have to design and construct a model of a "green"/energy-efficient house. we need 60 (yes, sixty!) eco-friendly/green/energy-efficient components in the house. ANY IDEAS??? thank you lots!! :D so far i have: -adobe walls (control temp, cheap, eco-friendly) -solar panels -rainwater collection -greywater recycling -rain garden -xeriscaping
Why did renowned green architect Ken Yeang say this? Ken Yeang, a renowned green architect who designs green skyscrapers and wrote many books on them said that "the skyscraper building type is probably the most ecologically unfriendly of all building types, but until an economically viable alternative is identified, it is necessary to make them as humane and as sustainable as possible." Why does he think they are the most ecologically unfriendly? What are your thoughts? (Look up the book "Eco Skyscrapers" on Amazon.com and scroll down to the Product Description)
What is the best Green Degree? I'm interested in studying environmental design, but I'm unsure about a major. I'm interested in Urban ecology, Industrial/urban/environmental development and design (large and small scale), and sustainable business. Any suggestions on programs/schools/majors that would make the best use of the progress the green building movement is making. Not only would I be interested in building from scratch, but really updating exisiting homes and businesses to be more environmentally mindfull. Something like the Green Bakery http://www.buildagreenbakery.com/... where all aspects are considered.
What do you think about integrating botany/plants into architecture and building design? I think it's jaw-droppingly awesome when you see the rare building with green plants growing on it. I'm not talking like some old house overrun with weeds or something, but when plants have somehow been integrated into the actual design or aesthetic of the building, whether on the roof, inside, around, or on the walls of it. Aside from any of the reasons people might come up with for why it's good for the environment yatta yatta, it just looks really awesome. Cities NEED more green, so why not use the spaces we got to grow more green stuff? Buildings can be like templates for new and weird urban foliage, a shift away from all the typical hard grays, blacks, and whites of the concrete jungle.
Need More Environmental Sayings? I've heard about some sayings and quotes in my faculty. Do you know of any more? I was thinking of changing my email. Thanks :) I only have two so far! Net Zero (Referring to green building design - no emissions) 350 (Referring to the target levels of allowable C02 in the air - parts per million)
anyone have examples of brilliant 'green' design? has anyone seen any designs recently (cars, fridges, tables, benches etc) that are built for sustainability and also made with green issues and natural disasters as the inspiration to the design?maybe the materials used are 100% recylable/recycled?energy efficient designs?anything on those sort of lines really.any help (and links) would be much appreciated.joe
Has Anyone heard of Lead AP? My uncle claims it is a test/certification on environmentally friendly construction designs (building green), but so far I haven't been able to locate any information. So help would be appreciated. I am a student in Civil Engineering.
How do I calculate a buildings probable power consumption based on its occupancy? I am designing a hypothetical building in Long Beach, CA. It is supposed to be a net-zero energy, green building training facility. I need to know what amount of kWh that I need to be able to provide power for using alternative means of energy production. My max occupancy is about 400-500 people. How can I calculate how many kWh that I need to provide for this building?
Mr. Lee operates a green grocery in a building he owns in one of the outer boroughs of New York City? 6.Mr. Lee operates a green grocery in a building he owns in one of the outer boroughs of New York City. Recently, a large chemical firm offered him a position as a senior engineer designing plants for its Asian operations. (Mr. Lee has a master's degree in chemical engineering). His salary plus benefits would be $95,000 per year. A recent annual financial statement of his store's operations indicates the following: Revenue $625,000 Cost of Goods Sold 325,000 wages of workers 75,000 Taxes, insurance, maintenance, and Depreciation on building 30,000 Interest on business loan (10%) 5,000 Other miscellaneous expenses 15,000 Profit before taxes 175,000 If Mr. Lee decides to take the job, he knows that he can sell the store for $350,000 because of the goodwill built with a steady clientele of neighborhood customers and the excellent location of the building. He would still hold on to the building, however, and he knows he could earn a rent of $50,000 on this asset. If he did sell the business, assume he would use some of the proceeds from the sale to pay off his business loan of $50,000. He could then invest the difference of $300,000 (i.e. 350,000 - 50,000) and expect to receive an annual return of 9 percent. Should Mr. Lee sell his business and go to work for the chemical company? In answering this question, also consider the following information: a. In his own business, Mr. Lee works between 16 and 18 hours a day, 6 days a week. He can expect to work between 10 and 12 hours a day, 5 days a week, in the chemical company. b. Currently, Mr. Lee is assisted by his wife and his brother, both whom receive no salary but share in the profits of the business. c. Mr. Lee expects his salary and the profits of his business to increase at roughly the same rate over the next 5 years. Justify your answer. A simple yes or no does not suffice need supporting numbers Is is worth Mr. Lee profit to accept the job at the chemical plants and figure out his lost wages or gain wages is accepted.
Is Mechanical Engineering the right career path for me? I'm a twenty-six year old mother and I just finished my first semester in college. I'm thinking of majoring in Mechanical Engineering because it seems to be the most flexible, in terms of career choices, of all the engineering majors. However, what I eventually want to do is help to develop green technologies related to building and building design. Is M.E. the right choice for me, as far as, a major is concerned for my career direction, or might something else be a better option for me? Creative suggestions welcomed.
How can I get a job in sustainable building? I'm interested in working with green architecture and design, such as straw bale construction, etc. I have a B.A. in Geologic Sciences and have been working in education for the past five years, so it's a bit of a change. What should I do to get started?
Building with bamboo plywood? I working on a design project and want to use bamboo plywood as my building material. The concept is temporary emergency relief housing... but with a 'green' design. Does anyone know much about bamboo plywood?
green belt design? a green belt design reqiurements needed to design for a residential building
What is a good name for my business? I have operated a small business that offers video production (do weddings, small corporate videos, events, etc), some website design, photography, video transfers (like 8mm film to DVD), photo/slide/negative scanning, and similar type services that I called NTP Memories, LLC. I am expanding my services to offer some design and consulting services as well, like Auto CAD drafting and design services, LEED consulting services (for certifying buildings using the US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System), Project Management consulting services, etc. I thought of and registered to name the company NTP Production and Design, LLC, but I am not totally sold on that simply because I am unsure of what website domain to get. For NTP Memories, LLC, I already have www.ntpmemories.com which makes sense, but I am hitting a wall on this new change. Any real ideas or help would be appreciated. I would also love some logo ideas as well if anyone has any. Thank you in advance! Oh, and the NTP stands for my initials, if you were wondering.
How do i clean my green bicycle grips? I have bright green grips for my bike and i just got them and now there is like these little like rubber things stuck in between the rivets in the design. I think its like the build up from dirt on my hands or sweat. I just wanted to know how to clean this off because it starting to be alot.
What career for a person interested in Green ECo-friendly architecture? I am a undecided freshman UCSD considering major options. An interest I have is eco friendly archtecture and alternative building materials. In high school I designed an earth sheltered home and a strawbale home for an Environmental Science class and I found it a lot of fun. What would I major in i were to pursue a career in this field? and what careers are available? I know it is a growing trend as the environment is degrading and i would like to do everything I can to help.
How Green are CFL light builds, really? CFL's are supposted to be green because they require less energy. Now, because the Edison Standard was a simple design (Glass, aluminum and wire) and was completely recylcable, I assume that the CFL's are much harder to make and can't be recycled. So, how much pollution is created when a CFL light build is made? Surely there must be some chemical run off or Green house gasses made. How much polution are CFL's going to make, when they do eventually die, and go into landfills?
How much can an architect make? I understand that the question is rather general, but I felt it may be somewhat sufficient for a subject. Half of the questions asked regarding architecture have been a bit naive or just flat out ridiculous. I love architecture, granted at times it does get a bit upsetting when hearing of the stress, endless hours of work, lack of recognition and horrible pay, but I've heard the end result along with the final product makes it worth while. My question is how much can an individual pursuing a career in architecture make? I'm currently at a University studying architecture in my undergrad. I've been around the block, and have understood that my program is not professional, and in order to get a job I must complete the masters program in architecture. In the time being I have also enrolled in a college for architectural technician diploma program, and have been doing some CAD certifications. What is the difference, in job description and salary, for an architect, CAD technician, architectural technician and architectural technologist? I'm looking at every avenue to further my knowledge and experience to be able to be successful once I am out of school. With regards to my academic pursuits, I wish to complete my Hon. B.A at my university, move onto Masters of Architecture, complete my diploma in either Architectural technician/technology (one is 2 years the other is 3 years) and complete some CAD certifications (AutoCAD, Revit, etc). I'm hoping to pursue a career in architecture, but one with regards to sustainable design, green building, etc. Just curious to know what to expect.
What LEED exam for construction management? Which exam would best fit for a student in pursuit of a BS in Construction Management? building a house, school project? my objective for my big project is to build and design an accessible house. i wonder if anyone have any ideas to make a house "green" , as is sustainable and environmentally friendly. this applies to interior or exterior design of the house thanks.
If there was an ecologically sustainable vacation resort, would you go? Assume the cost is the same as going on a normal vacation. Ecologically sustainable in this case refers to the resort using green energy sources, environmentally friendly building materials and designs, and serving naturally grown foods. It would still have many, if not all, of the comforts of a standard hotel experience.
sustainable urban development? Im a civil engineering undergraduate and Im interested in sustainable urban development in engineering and LEED (Leaders in Energy and Environmental Design) for green building and sustainable urban development. Im wondering what I should focus in for this? Should i focus on environmental engineering or construction, or whichever?
Are you satisfied about the plans for the World Trade center site? Yes for the most part, I am just sad that the Freedom tower can't be taller. It is supposed to be only 1,776 feet. It is still high for a skyscraper, but not as high as it's competitors. The Freedom tower aint got nothin' on the new 2,650 Burj Dubaiunder construcyion in the UAE [ which is getting closer to completion]. Nor can it compare to the proposed 2,000 foot Chicago Spire. I love the overall architecture of all buildings. The completed 7 World Trade center looks nice and clean, but it is just a light blue box, as far as I'm concerned. It doesn't have much architecture detail that sets it apart from most other buildings in manhattan, despite it's "Green Design". I love the memorial design. It is such a shame they are taking down the Deutche Bank building, because of damage from the collapse, I thing it adds contrast to lower manhattan. Another thing is that it is taking too long too complete. First it takes over 6 years to even start construction and it's going to complete. May I add that that the floor space is not used up to it's potential. The freedom tower is supposed to dwar the 1250ft/102 floor empire state building, but obly have 82 floors.
What would make the ultimate eco friendly building? Design, parts, location, etc.? Example: Warehouse like the obscenely large Wal-Mart DC near where I live with a green roof or brown roof. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_roof) Maybe even wind power turbines built on the roof too. Natural landscaping around it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_landscaping). Solar panels built into the car ports in the parking lot with places to plug in electric cars. Water reclimation catacombs beneath the parking lot. re-use of grey water is a great idea too.
Can i house all of these together in a roughly 30 gallon paludarium? A paludarium is a terrarium with water. If you didn't know. 1-3 Green Anole 1-3 Green Tree Frog 1-2 Fire Bellied Toads 1-2 Newts 3-4 Tetra's or Guppies Along with this i want moss ferns maybe a few safe Orchids.. If you have any other idea's let me know i am in the beginning stages here of building, and designing my paludarium.

Is "Green Design" becoming Important? In real estate marketing, has the "greenness" of a building become a useful tool? Do customers care about that at all? What about LEED certification? Has that ever come up in marketing decisions?
how can i show the architectural side of a power plant? I’m an architecture student and we are task to design an industrial building that is green (sustainable building), what comes to my mind is a solar power plant, but I don’t know how I’m going to start, I don’t know the space program for a power plant and I think designing an industrial building is more of engineering and does not show more of the architectural side...Still don’t have an idea how to start and how can I show the architectural side of it….hope you can help me.. Thanks in advance
soylent green- who believes it could be a reality? soylent green is people!!! - issues: offing ppl. china- child limit. environment. dubai. tallest buildings. upward structure, self sustaining energy design- turbines built into building to power electricity for the structure and other areas. sunchips-biodegradable chip bags too noisy. waste buildup.
building a traffic light signal using Electronics workbench, i need help? good day to you all, can some one please help me, i got a Computer Logics and Digital design project to design a traffic light signal, with red, green and amber light, on a four roads, there will be a major road and a minor road, but honestly, i dont know how and where to start can some one help me please.
What feelings or emotions do you have when you see these colors? I am designing a building for "meditation" for class and one of my ideas is to use different colors create different feelings and emotions from them. I would like to know what feeling and emotions do you have when you see any of these colors? Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange Thanks
Need guide to construct Green Home in tropical climate.? In my country, the climate is very humid and very warm all year long. I haven't been able to find real solution to Green Homes for this kind of climate and in 5 years time, i'm thinking of building my own house. Can anyone point out where i can find resources (information and physical material) for Green Home design specifically for tropical climate? I do have some ideas, but still need some pointers on application: 1. Dessicant dehumidifier. 2. Passive ventilation (i'm thinking of utilizing differential pressure like burrows). 3. Solar Panel (equatorial countries benefit greatly from this) 4. Vertical wind turbine (where can i get it in Malaysia?) etc...
How do you build a safe flamethrower? I want to build one because it would be fun to shoot, i can't find any designs for one and i want one where you can just screw on new little green propane tanks when it's out of gas. Yes it's legal I don't care at all what you think about it, i'm building one.
do you know some alternative electricity/green energy sources? i am doing a thesis and looking for green and renewable energy methods that can be installed in the design of my building/development. it is a residential(condo) with commercial(community mall) development in a tropical climate. the condo's target market are middle-income families so the cheaper the cost of the green/renewable energy and its installation into the building, the better the renewable power need not cover the whole electricity consumption, just a significant percentage to cut drastically on electricity bills if you also have some sites that are about cheaper/clean/renewable/sustainable energy, or buildings that used cheap renewable electricity, let me know thanks!! =)
economical Community Resource Center building?? help asap please? I have to design a GREEN, ECONOMICAL, COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTER in a REMOTE area for my archetectural engineering class. I need all the help I can get, I know nothing about the subject so please anything would be great. I was thinking solar power, oh yea and it has to maintain itself, have internet, satelite, and economical and green friendly like I mentioned before. Thanks, any ideas will be highly appriciated. Have a Good Day! :)
I there a place where I can learn how to build green houses? Here is what I want to learn to do: -build a house out of shipping containers -build home made solar panels maybe wind -get land in the hills and nature outside of LA somewhere cheap maybe not yet developed but going to be -septic tank -well or water tower -use effective materials like bamboo -maybe farm a little -ect I have these ideas but would like to know if there is a place to get thoroughly informed on the subjects like a school, comprehensive book, in depth website, internships ect. I have question like need ideas on how to design the house, and what materials to use, and how to live rural, where to get cheap land ect. sorry i didnt mean to say a gardening house. i meant to say a residential house that is efficient.
I need ideas for a putting green contest.? I am opening a new class a office building. I have an acre atrium in the center and have a 9 hole professional putting course going in along with water features and tropical plants. I need ideas for some sort of grand opening/putting contest. This s not a put put course. It is being designed by a top golf course designer. Help I don't golf!!!
can someone please help me !!!? i need to find a website where i can find about a building with a leed design and i also need a house with a leed design. for those of u that dont know what a leed design is.....it is a green design that helps in saving energy and water.
Possibilities With Solar Energies? Imagine designing a new building. What new technologies and efficiencies should be included in making the building? Given that green tech can be expensive, how can you a ( a rich CEO of the company) afford to incorporate these changes in future planning?
How much weight a concrete flat roof can hold? Hi: I'm a landscape design student. I have a design project for designing and building a green roof. I live in Puerto Rico, most houses are made with concrete, and the roofing is flat. How do I figure out how much weight can a flat roof can hold? A simple extensive Green Roof weighs between 60-150 kg/m2 (13.0-30.0 lb/sq.ft.) depending on the thickness of the Green Roof system build-up. How do I know if the roof is suitable for a green roof. The roof measures 50' x 60', about 8" thick, all concrete (with steel bars). What else I need to know to figure this out? I mean calculations, formulas, stuff like that. Can someone please help? I'm quite worried. The teacher has been awful, he's no help at all. I barely have two week to finish this (plus my other classes). I have been doing searches on line with no luck. I don't need to hire an structural engineer, I just the know how, in simple words since I'm not an engineering student. Any reference to anything (books, internet) will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :o)
Need name ideas for an earth friendly building program... Help!? We are working on an optional building package that consists of earth friendly/green advantages for new homes. The package will include energy efficient lighting/heating, water saving features, designs that limit waste etc. We've been thinking of a name for this program such as True Green (but we're not truly a green builder, so I think this is misleading) or some around earth friendly.... anyone have any ideas??? Thanks I'm trying to stay away from using the word "green". We are not 100% green so I think that it would be misleading to say green. We are instead trying to do things that are more earth friendly and improve in places that we can improve on. Thanks
Please help me about graphic design? About the book. What does it mean to be green? This book, is a celebration of interesting small buildings, asks what we mean by building green and how doing enriches the world around us. The projects are not only about building well, but about seeing well. They embrace the spectrum of small structures from traditional huts and ornamental follies, to the charmingly surreal. Buildings that look after people can also be ones that look after the earth. Please give me a title only and I want very good English title (advanced). Thank you for answering.
i need help designing my bedroom?! i'm 15 and want it kinda cool vintage but more adaptable? i'm totally redesigning my bedroom :) it's a largish rectangle room, with built in wardrobes but i can get rid of them. i have a green carpet, but i might be able to get rid of that. although a wooden floor would probably go more with the style of room i'm after, i want a carpet. i really like designs like this, http://s7d2.scene7.com/is/image/UrbanOutfitters/12121984_21_b?$prodmain$ http://s7d2.scene7.com/is/image/UrbanOutfitters/12991675_00_b?$prodmain$ but i also really like kitcsh things, and cute toys like dinosaurs and bows and some scene and retro things. i don't want to many patterns so i can buy things which will fit in easily. the colours i would concider for my room are yellow, blue, purple and possibly green? can you fabulous people help me put together colour schemes and ideas? thanks. oh, i forgot to mention i'm in england, so i can't really go to places like jcpenny, but thanks anyway :)
If architecture is an art why the owner can paint in chocking pink your design? Some days ago I pass a building that was made of exposed concrete (without paint). The owner paint the entire building in an horrible green (mint). Can you imagine a person that buy a Monet paint only to be use as canvas for another paint? In what way are the architects the owners of their desings? r u randy: Can you imagine the Sydney Opera House painted in Yellow or a building of Frank Gehry with the titanium cladding removed? Or what about White House painted in gray.
Covering large built-in shelving with fabric? My bedroom is a converted office, with two huge floor to ceiling shelving units (built in). I want to use the shelves for clothing storage(as there is no closet), but I want to cover them with fabric. I have a light green, asian inspired comforter, and light green/dark brown curtains(almost a "crushed" look). Any color and design ideas? It will cover 2/3rds of the second largest wall, with a 3 foot wall in the middle.
School bathroom designs....? My math teacher really wants to paint the school bathroom in the new building. It's a single unisex bathroom so its relatively small. Anyway, she doesn't know what color to paint it. At the moment it's white with ugly green tile from the floor to halfway up the wall. We can't do anything about the tile but we still want to paint and decorate it. It's going to be a girls only bathroom....so...any ideas?? yea...its a unisex bathroom but she is making it all girly and stuff....so boys won't use it
Solar Panels & Linking them to mains supply - Advice Please? Hello All, I run a Design Company, and as part of my expension, I am mortgaging to build an "Eco-Friendly" office. I have grants from the DTI and assistance from several groups to build a "green" building at a smaller cost than a traditional "bricks and mortar" construction. We are looking at using Solar panels on the roof to reduce our electric and heating costs, and potentially tying it in with a small windfarm. My question is, does anyone know (on a conceptual basis) what equipment is needed to allow these two energy devices to work in harmony with mains supply? Your thoughts & advice are appreciated Steve Modelspace Design
Does anyone out there live in a kit house built in the round style? I want to know all aout it.? I have seen homes built completely round and are so unique. They are kit homes and shipped from the manufacturer, I would like to know about the experience with them and if it was all worth it. Would you do things differently and were there any serious drawbacks to the process. What is the shipping cost to the site. This type of home is Green and withstands all types of storms, etc, due to the contruction of being in the round design.

Bertrand 15? Bertrand Mpigabahizi Geography PAP A3 4-28-08 Field Study # 1 (Temple Emanu-El) The predominant building materials are light brown cement, dark brown wood, and some foreign marble from northern Syria. The temple Emanu – El was the first Jewish temple in northern Texas being built in 1875, without the additional work on the original building it would have been in terrible condition but with the better structural work the building looks brand new. The main colors are dark brown, white and blue. The Temple of Emanu-El was build over a century ago in 1875, making it 133 years old. In height the building isn’t that spectacular with most of the building being only 2 floors up , but the length of the building surpasses both of the previous buildings. So in height The Emanu – El does not bring anything special to the neighborhood, but with the fact that it goes on for miles it certainly has something alluring to its name. Like most modern church’s the architectural features does not hold a torch to the medieval church’s that litter southern Europe and east Africa. It was built more like a outside high school with many rooms and hall ways. Unlike the Islamic mosques the Jewish temple is littered with images of the holy figures and scenes from the Old Testament. The temple is located in a busy intersection surrounded by shopping centers, schools, malls, and hundreds of streets. There is a school that in height surpasses the temple in the east ward and there is also a medical center in the posterior of the property. Together with the school and the center it does have a presence in the busy area but it loses some shine from the near by mall and many shopping centers and schools. For more information you can check out the Temple’s web site: http://www.tedallas.org/index.html Field Study # 2 ( Dallas Masjid ) The Frisco Masjid is absolutely beautiful and the diverse building material certainly helps give the building the allure that helps attract so many visitors. It is predominantly made out of colored brick, cement, Egyptian marble and foreign materials from India and east Africa. The main building is considered old to some people being little bit under a half a century years old , but if you ever have the chance of visiting the mosque it looks like it has only been standing for two or three years. It’s truly in a healthy condition looking finer then buildings only standing for a couple of years. The main colors are blue , brown and green. The main building was built in 1968, but other structures have been constantly being built ever since. The size is beyond imagine, it sky rockets out of the ground and surpasses almost every building in its surrounding areas. Like most mosques in both the Middle East and around the world this building is littered with impressive architectural features and designs, from painted towers to eerie columns this mosque leaves little to the imagination. Other then towers and columns the building also has a huge dome the erupts out of the core of the building. Like many mosques the Dallas Masjid does not show off many symbolic pictures or paintings of Muhammad or God, but do have hundreds of paintings of angles and symbols in both the exterior and anterior of the building. Inside the main property the building is surrounded by lush gardens and a protective brick wall that circles around the anterior…..but on the outside of the property there are busy streets and many residential neighborhoods. There is no other building or structures surrounding the mosque except the brick wall that circulates the building. Other then a near by sky scraper, the mosques dominates the surrounding area which only consists of residential neighborhoods and busy streets. For more information you can check out the Mosque’s web site: http://www.masjidalislam.org/index.htm Field Study # 3 (Celebration Centre) The Celebration Covenant Church in Frisco Texas is made out of two prominent building materials red brick and white cement .The bricks beautifully make out the columns of the church and the minor roof, while the cement makes up the rest of the building. The structural condition is very sound , only being built a couple of years ago (6 years ) the building has not yet experienced the harsh conditions some church’s in Europe and other areas have gone through having being been standing for centuries The main colors are light brown, dark brown , and blue . .The church it self was built in May 19th , 2002 in Frisco Texas but the original plans for the church were made around the mid 90s by pastors Keith and Shelia Craft and the original CCC team . Where the church is located it is the biggest man -made structure second to the Frisco library, so comparing it to other buildings it’s a pretty outstanding size. But by 2010 after the present day church is upgraded it will pass the size of the Frisco library and many other buildings in Frisco. The church has some outstanding architectural features in its present form with brick columns and many glass openings. But by 2010 when the church is upgraded, many historic sculptures, cathedral like towers and numerous columns will be added that it even will rival some off the great church’s standing today. The Celebration Covenant Church is more of a modern church and does not display any symbolic icons on the exterior of the buildings expect a glass portrait of the Christ. The church is located near busy streets, gated communities, vacant green lands, and shopping spaces…..if it wasn’t for its noticeable size the church would be washed out into its diverse background. Other then the main building there is a medium size building nearing the exterior of the church, and a sports center in the far left. The Celebration Covenant Church is the dominant man – made structure in the area the only thing that out shines it is the Frisco library and depending where you are looking at a main high in the far end of the region. For more information you can check out the Church’s web site: http://www.celebrationcovenant.com/main.htm PICTURES Temple Emanu – El Dallas Majisid Celebration Centre

muslims How to Make America an Islamic Nation ? Congress just passed a bill declaring the consumption of alcohol a felony, punishable by up to 120 days in jail. Although critics said the new law wouldn't work anymore than Prohibition did in the 1920's, supporters of the measure felt confident that it would hold, given the large support from the Muslim America community. Even now, many Islamic organizations are setting up alcohol treatment centers and prevention programs designed to help people kick the dangerous habit. The president, a staunch supporter of moral values, is expected to sign the new bill into law when reaches his desk. Sound like fiction? It may be fiction now, but the future is like a book of blank, white pages; anything can happen. When I accepted Islam and surrendered my heart to Allah's will, I didn't do it for economic or social reasons. In fact, I suffered in those two areas because of my conversion. Rather, it was a choice on my part to reform my soul, my mind and my understanding of why I was alive and why I would die one day. I didn't think about living in some town for a few years and making my fortune so my kids could go to Ivy league schools. I wasn't thinking about how to get all my relative a green card nor was I planning to leave and go back home to some far land after my bank account was full enough. I was born and raised here. This is my land. I'll raise my children here, Insha'allah and probably be buried here as well. I knew that by accepting Islam I was declaring that America needed to do so too. America, my home, would naturally become an Islamic country one day. There is no other way to think if you are a truly conscientious believer in Allah. In past columns, I have raised complaints or alarm bells at the state of some segment of the Muslim community. Now I'm going to offer three suggestions for how we can turn the situation around and become the dominant social and cultural force in a country that needs Islam more than another pop-star, beer-brand or psychic network. First, we must be reminded of a simple truth: if you believe in Allah, then you must be more than just a praying Muslim; more than just a fasting Muslim. A Christian can go to the masjid and pray side-by-side with us all he wants; a Jew can fast in Ramadan for forty years, but if such a person doesn't surrender their will to Allah, then all those activities won't mean much. Belief in Allah is what makes those actions have merit on Judgment Day. In the same way, why should we see a praying and fasting Muslim and automatically assume he or she is a true believer? The blessed Prophet once observed that many are the people who fast but who get nothing from it but hunger and thirst. In a similar vein, Allah said that people who pray for show are those who deny the deen. The intention, the belief, that's what makes our Islam real. That's what builds a foundation for the future of our community here. Secondly, what's more important than what people see us doing in the masjid, is what they see us doing outside in the society. If people view us as foreigners, it's not because everybody is an evil racist. It's because sometimes we're presenting ourselves that way. We have to look at ourselves with a critical eye! As a quick note, lest multitudes write and complain: The vast majority of Muslims here have chosen to live in non-Muslim neighborhoods; have chosen to live far from the masjid, have chosen to turn their children into neo-kuffar by letting them be indoctrinated by the public school system and have chosen to have non-Muslims as the primary people they come into contact with. If you choose not to actively practice Islam in your daily life, if you choose not to build and Islamic community, then don't display yourself as an ethnic model and say this is what a Muslim should be. This leads me to the third factor which will help our faith prosper and grow here. The essential, unifying force we must have is a solid, homogenous community. We must live together. All those people who cry about ghettoizing ourselves need to wake up. Why do the Orthodox Jews live together? Why do the Amish live together? Why do the Mormons, the Sikhs, the survivalists and the Koreans live together? Quite simply, to preserve the unique way of life from the scrourge of assimilation. Are they ghettoized? No. Are they poor? No. Their communities tend to be healthier, safer and more prosperous than the general melting pot. How many Muslims have been lost to Islam in the last fifty years here? Tens of thousands have been lost. The only reason Islam is still growing here, by large, is because of a steady stream of immigration. But when that dries up, the assimilation will dwindle our community down to nothing. It's like we have a bucket with a hole in the bottom. We keep pouring new immigrants in, but so many are leaking out are lost forever. (And we're hardly making concerted or intelligent efforts at bringing others to the faith.) I used to have contact with a unique community in the heart of Detroit, Michigan. It was originally settled by Yemeni immigrants about ten years ago. Those Muslims could have gone the way of others and lost their Iman. But as you'll see, something quite different occurred. I still remember my first visit to the area fondly. I was attending a meeting of the newly-formed local ICNA group and had never been exposed to the place before. What I saw amazed me. I was elated, in fact! Children were saying salaams to me on the street and women (in hijab) were walking around and going places leisurely and confidently. I saw Muslims who were Arab, Black and Bengali. But what took the cake for me was when out of nowhere I heard the adhan outdoors over a loudspeaker. They fought the city council and won the right to do adhan five times a day in the community! Something clicked in the minds of these people. The Yemenis formed a master plan and determined to stay together. They set up a fund and slowly bought one house after another, moving Muslim families in and drug-infested kafirs out, until they literally had thousands of Muslims businesses and stores in the heart of the community and bought a huge Catholic church and made it into a beautiful masjid. They even made a small community health care center! When we were leaving our meeting and walking to the masjid for salat, it was the most beautiful sight: from all directions, men, women and children, of all races, were going to their masjid as a community. I've never been to Muslim country before, but I'll tell you this much, I felt as if I were in an Islamic country. And this wasn't Egypt or India or Turkey. It was right here - in America.

Non-software patents similar to the open source license? Suppose I have a green energy idea that can benefit the human kind when it is implemented. Suppose it works. I do not necessarily want to benefit from it materially but rather want the public to use it without any private company monopolizing the design. Can I file an "Open source" - like patent? Do I just post the idea on the internet? File a regular patent that expires in 1 month? How about other companies that would want to file their private patents on top of this public patent? Will they be able to do so ? Can it be required that, like with open source license, anyone who makes further designs has to contribute them back to public? Put in other words: what is the best way to set up incentives so that the idea is picked up, implemented, built on top of, but not abused by some private party? What legal tools are available to an individual with not a lot of money? Thanks.
Circuit design for traffic light operation? My church has a traffic light for the youth building. We want to wire it up to use it as a timer...when turned on, the green lights will energize for 8 minutes then the yellow lights will come on for 2 minutes then the red lights come on. I do not know what type of lights a standard traffic light uses (ac or dc, volts, watts, etc) and we are trying to keep the control box/circuit design cost to a minimum. Any suggestions?
Why does the middle east not have its service stations here in australia (desert fuel)? There is so many idea's that the middle eastern people need to think about as why just supply oil instead people from the should design the own infrastructure to build there own fuel outlets .The fuels in the middle east combined with the right infrastructure in place would have the peace in the middle east and control of there own destiny instead of fighting all the time to take each others land or resources .Oman is such a beautiful place with people and peace of learning able to sit under the palm tree's in the day .Infrastrucuture would develop more than just oil even clothing for people .The desert is slowly becoming green again.
Should we build to the sky to stop the greenbelt problem? Following on from my last question about wether we should build into the greenbelt areas to stop the housing problems....the next question is.."should we start building taller buildings in the Cities to stop the expansion into green belt areas and solve the housing crisis this way? Sky scrapers? Now this would worry the government because it means destroying the sky line...but..surely if they designed them to ensure it was not an eye sore...could that work? Then ask...but what if people want to live in the country more? Well to be honest, not many people actually 'live in the country' very few do...there are many smaller towns and cities that could be expanded without going in to greenbelt areas. What about the argument that cities are already too crowded? Is that not what cities are about anyway? If we build up though we would have to create a fairer system so people could afford it, we already have affordable housing..which by the way is NOT affordable..is £300,000 affordable to you Maybe thats why people are moving out of Cities, because they cant afford to live there, so is this whole mess the Governments fault...and are they now trying to solve there mess by building into Greenbelt areas, knowing that no one will kick up a fuss?
Want to start my own Landscaping Business But not sure how to do that? I have been told by many that my work is very beautiful and that I should go into business for myself. I love to design yards and I feel I am very good at it. I have never had my own business before so I really don't even know where to start. Do I need a licence for this? When and If I did start do I pay for all the lawn design and then charge them for it afterwards? How much does ones usually charge for something like this? I know it cost me a pretty penny to do my own yard.LOL Plus all the time I had into it. I built my own ponds, bridges, flower pots, Large and small driftwood decor, painted what ever needed to be painted, had several decor water pumps running, Large stumps of wood for some of the water decor pumps to sit on. I halled in lava rocks, river rocks, large bolder rocks for design, many flower plants, wind chimes, tie kie torches, indoor outdoor rope lights that swirled through the ground plants, ground ornaments, ground lights, green viens through the back fencing, ect
Are there any Ghanaian architecture students in S.E. England interested in environmentally-friendly design? I am doing an environmental architecture MSc and am looking for another young architecture student with a fresh imagination interested in low energy/ passive/ bio-climatic buildings and renewable energy to collaborate with on designing an innovative small development in Accra, Ghana. You must be Ghanaian or have lived in Ghana for several years with an extensive knowledge of the climate, geography, nature, local and vernacular architecture. You must also be very interested in building with minimal environmental impact. I am asking this on behalf of a client, motivated by the environment and green issues. Even if you are not studying architecture but are studying in the UK, I would be pleased to meet you- preferably if you are travelling to Accra in the next few months. Possibility of remuneration.
How do we win with our civic centre sales pitch? Our school is having two design days in which we design a building in a new eco-town which is being built in '10. We've been assigned the civic centre. (Which is like a community centre). We first have to win out of three groups, then beat another to go into the finals. If we win the final, we get to go over the eco-town site in a helicopter! And bragging rights, of course. Does anybody have any fantastic winning ideas for us? We've already come up with a trademark for the town (concrete 'green rainbows' which have solar panels) but does anybody have ideas on how to deliver our five minute sales pitch? (we can use multimedia) Any help would be greatly appreciated.
