I have an associates degree in Horticulture. What could I do working with a landscape architect? I owned my own business for 2 years where I hand designed landscapes. Installed hardscapes, plants and irrigation pipes. Also, I hired the workers, ordered plants, soil, brick, granite dust, stone wear and paid the workers. I have been through a life changing event which took me out of this scene for a while, but want to go back into this working with a landscape architect. I am also an artist. I have a certificate in Landscape Design and Commercial Design which was part of my degree.
Landscape Design - Old School House Ideas? Ok, so where I work, the building is an old school house, and my boss owns the building, and I was trying to come up with suggestions for this problem... There were originally four sets of large cement stairs, a set at either end and two close together in the middle, at one point the building was turned into a church and they closed off one of the doors in the middle section, as it wasnt necessary, bricked up pretty well, you wouldnt know there was a door there, except for the stairs remain outside and to remove them would sort of unbalance the symmetry that it has... in keeping with the school house theme/restoration what is something large maybe somehow utilizing the stairs if possible or if not thats fine, that could balance out the exterior? anything that an old school house might have had? there is a bell tower on the building she is restoring so a bell suggestion wont work The doors are seperate from each other, each has its own set of stairs, I would say maybe 5 ft between the two doors/sets of stairs [ ]_____X__[ ]_____[ ] kinda like that

How much does simple bed landscaping in Dallas cost? We've got some simple shrubs along the front of our one-story brick ranch. Am thinking about having a professional come in and re-design these beds to add more character and color. Obviously the cost would range depending on the landscaper and the plants used...but I have no idea even what type of range re-doing these beds would cost. Also, any resources for planning your own beds (with actual plants and pics, otherwise I find it too overwhelming!) would be appreciated.

Why would a public highways authority use block paving for pavements (sidewalks) instead of tarmac/concrete? In my local authority area, the London Borough of Wandsworth (UK), a high proportion of the pavements in residential areas are paved in designs of brick-sized blocks e.g. http://www.google.com/maps?ll=51.451346,-0.235949&spn=0.006579,0.021973&t=m&z=16&vpsrc=6&layer=c&cbll=51.451306,-0.23614&panoid=zc0JwT6tI0GUxfIKWI3gsQ&cbp=12,44.59,,1,20.35 In other areas the pavements are mainly of a tarmac rolled surface or less intricate concrete slabs instead. I am surprised that so much of my local area is maintained to this high standard, because it seems like such a time consuming way to landscape an extensive surface area and one that is prone to infinite maintenance issues, such as when the blocks start "sinking" at varying rates, when individual blocks become cracked or loose, and the potential of dirt build-up in cracks. Isn't this a labour intensive, cost inefficient system? Albeit one that is visually appealing. Whole streets & pavements in Dutch and Danish towns appear to be block paved in the same way too. In most parts of the UK outside of my local authority area, intricate block paving is reserved for only the key central/commercial areas. The only other place I know of in the UK with pavements like in Wandsworth is the town of Tunbridge Wells http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=51.13784,0.248437&spn=0.013248,0.027595&t=m&vpsrc=0&layer=c&cbll=51.137853,0.248567&panoid=tRo9nqneX58SDODQWOq5_g&cbp=12,61.96,,1,14.71&z=15

Please help with suggestions for backyard landscaping, design.? I am having a lot of trouble deciding on a design, and features for my backyard. It is a pie shaped lot on a cul-de-sac. I live in Southern Ontario, Canada. Here are some pictures and a 'map' of my yard: http://backyardquestion.googlepages.com/backyard I have an easement (5 feet) on both sides (not the back) of my property, so any permanent structures are out - but, and plants, walkways, etc are okay - they can be temporarily moved if absolutely needed. I am planning on building a shed this year - fairly large and placing in in the top right of the yard as pictured above (near the #6) Some things we want are: Interesting plants. Some maintainence is okay, but we don't have time to spend hours every weekend - an intensive spring/fall cleanup is okay Walkway of some kind - preferrably no poured concrete Patio area. I am thinking of a small area (~15 feet wide circle, interlock brick, with built in firepit in middle More details at the website link. Thank

Outdoor landscaping - Easy to use software? Anyone know of an easy to use landscaping software that can be used to design the front yard. Retaining walls, pplanters, flowers, trees, driveway, and have patterns like stacked stone, brick, and stucco with cap walls?
What is the basic procedure for starting a landscaping company? I'm thinking about starting up a landscaping company with one of my good friends and was wondering what the procedure was for starting up a company. If it's relevent, we will be starting our business in Pennsylvania and will be doing work such as grass cutting, mulching, hedge and tree trimming, driveway sealing, brick work/design, ect ... Any information at all would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your time. I have two years experience working for a landscaping company. I have a college degree from a well respected university and plan on handling most of the business related operations of the company. My partner has over 10 years experience in the landscaping industry and is extremely knowledgable in the field.
Why are most British houses so badly designed? I know a lot of people will disagree with me here, but I don't care. It seems to me that when I think of British houses, I think of the majority of post-war houses-ugly brick boxes with plastic windows, no storage, bad plumbing, badly designed wiring and little to no ventilation, surrounded by hideous brown fences and pokey little gardens. And for variety, we have 'pebble dashing', fake concrete tiles and magnolia rendering. Why are British houses like that? And why do developers still build houses like that? I have a love for American houses-crisp white timber beauties with huge basements, 3 floors, industrial heating systems, storage galore, pretty sash windows and white picket fences. For starters, you'd of thought that in a country as small as Britain, houses would try to make best use of space by digging basements and building 3 storeys, but we don't. If someone says it's just because bricks are cheap in this country, I don't believe it... building a timber frame building is much cheaper, quicker, environmentally friendly, thermally efficient and far more flexible. Like many things, is it just a social thing~people get used to the way things have 'always been done' and replicate them regardless of their flaws, or is it a historical thing~did the 2nd world war mean that the country needed to just build masses of houses as cheaply and unimaginatively as possible using whatever materials we could dig up, and it just took on... forever? It does my head in how nothing ever gets better, and how I can take a train journey across the country and see rows and rows of identical hideous mock-georgian houses blotting the landscape. exactly! this is a temporary US government military house, and it looks just like most permanent British houses lol http://z.about.com/d/usmilitary/1/0/H/9/4/temp-housing.jpg
Buying our first place! :)? My honey and I are about to buy our first place. It's a total fixer-upper but exactly what we want. My question is more so about color schemes. Right now it has wood siding that we plan on replacing with traditional siding. It's a single story ranch with a large porch and brown brick covering most of the front with siding on the upper portion and sides. What would be good colors for the siding? We're thinking white siding? Are there any websites that show color schemes for the exterior? We're completely redoing everything but want a traditional style. He works for a landscaping company so he'll design our front and back yard. Any tips for us? We've checked for water damage, roof is in good condition, newer windows and no structural problems. Thanks :)
Landscaping on my own? I really, really hate my bare loan. It's a KB Florida house: big tall cement block and a tiny yard without anything to rest my eyes on. I'd love to create a nice shady place, but my problems are: 1) I have very little time because I take care of my little baby; 2) I have very limited money to work with - maybe $1000 at the most; 3) I am skinny female with no help from my husband, so putting in bricks and paving is out of the question. Is there anything I can do to make my narrow bare back yard a little more attractive? I absolutely lack designing taste and abilities and books on landscaping are like math to me. Please, maybe some professional landscaping advice on planting around borders and a little in the middle? Fence is unfortunately also out of the question. Thank you so much.
TOTALLY renovating a house, how much am i saving? I'm completely renovating a 1,200 sq ft house I just bought that sits on a 1 acre lot. I started by knocking down about x30, fifty foot tall pine trees that lined the property. Then graded and seeded the lot. Then I totally gutted the inside of the house, tearing it ALL down to the studs. Replaced the front and back doors, put in all new windows (12 of them which replaced ranch style sliders. I had to cut the brick to fit 48" tall double hungs but kept the width the same), new subfloors in the kitchen and bathroom, ran all new electrical throughout adding twice the number of receptacles to each room and recessed lighting as well as cat5 for the option of a home automation system. All new insulation in ALL the walls. I'm currently re-drywalling the whole house and putting in the bathroom (cement board, membrane, tub, toilet, vanity, and extending some plumbing so I fit under the shower head, basically EVERYTHING...). Also doing all the tile for the kitchen and bath. When this is done, I'm moving onto the basement and doing it all over again which will double the sq ft of the house. Also adding a large bathroom down there where there is currently a small 1/2 bath. Will be running new drains in the basement floor to accommodate the design (jackhammering). And all new electrical there as well. And still need to reseed again and do extensive landscaping this spring/summer which includes a large deck... I'm doing it all, by myself because, honestly, I can't afford the labor. Obviously, you don't have all the details but, ballpark, how much do you think I have saved/will save when its all done?
