Patio Landscape Designs Knowledge Base
If I have 3 designs with multiple otions how many possible choices does my customer have? I am a landscape designer. I have 3 seperate patio designs. Each design has 2 options for the paver patio and 3 options for the built in grill/ island. How many possible patio combinations are there with these choices? Note: please show me the way to figure this out for future reference. Guess I should have paid more attention in math class instead of drawing. Thanks for the help everyone.

Trends in Patio Furniture? Why is patio furniture so dull in color nowadays??? Everything in in a non-descript greenish/taupish/beige color. It has no vibrance or cheer. I like the design styles of the furniture, but must everything look so dull? I like brighter colors--blues, yellows, pinks, etceteras...because after a long midwestern winter, I welcome the color! It makes me feel happy and the furniture doesn't blend in with the landscaping to the point that it gets washed out. Does anyone feel the way I do? Any suggestions?
How can I compress jpg files to make much smaller files? Specifically, I have an entire directory showing photos of plants and hardscape features (i.e. patios, retaining walls, walkways, water features, nightlighting, etc.) I do AutoCAD drafting for a landscape company in Denver. We have a very old version of AutoCAD, but I've been able to import jpg files of photos into AutoCAD landscape designs (thankfully, we're updating or AutoCAD this winter!). My problem is that the inserted jpg files create HUGE AutoCAD files. I am trying to find a good, quick, efficient method to condense all of my photos so that they can be inserted into the CAD drawings. Any suggestions out there? Thanks! Sincerely, Dave Argenta Denver

Algebra II word problem... Rational Zeros? Can someone explain this??? Im really weak with word problems... so here it is. "You are a landscape artist designing a square patio that is to be made from 128 cubic feet of concrete. The thickness of the patio is 15.5 feet less than each side length. What are the dimensions of the patio?"
I have an old friend from college that designs, builds, and sells structures. Does this sound good to you? I have an old friend from college that designs, builds, and sells buildings and bridges. He’s an engineer and architect, with all the degrees. Given the opportunities in New York City around the new World Trade Center, he has 3 design projects in the works - including one park bridge. The park is owned by the neighborhood committee, and is reserved for residents of the riverside area. There is fishing and boating allowed, but no swimming. The bridge becomes a vital necessity to the neighborhood residents, so that they can drive easily to the marina - which is actually located in New Jersey - and get to their boats. The neighborhood design committee has already purchased the land and began construction on the dwellings, as well as the park pavilion. The bridge project will have to proceed or the neighborhood housing project will fall through with only half a park. The design committee is locked into paying for my friend's architectural design. The only problem is, the neighborhood designers do not have enough funds to finish building all the projected houses in the neighborhood. In order to complete the project, the design committee would have to sell more housing in the neighborhood in advance of being built. Essentially, they need investors who are actually homebuyers. (Homebuyers that pay in advance of work.) The private neighborhood is nice, complete with the park and marina, and the bridge between them. I've seen the design layouts and plans. It even has a pedestrian walkway that is nice enough and large enough to use for fishing, or to bicycle on. The homes themselves are built to design through planning with the neighborhood design committee. The lots range from four to eight acres in size. The best part is, all of this land is going for cheap - basically cost the designers have already paid, plus 7.8%. The materials to build homes are also costing investors very little mark up, and are coming in at near wholesale prices. The labor costs end up being washed up among the entire neighborhood, because they need it finished. So the more you want in the home, the more you save. (The basic unit for any home in the neighborhood is a raised ranch with an extended family room addition and a one car garage.) Sitting on four acres, this would cost only $163,000. The homes for sale include the 4 acre lot, which is groomed and landscaped. The ranch, which with the addition (built off the rear of the structure) also has a front patio and rear deck. Sheds are not allowed in the neighborhood unless they are designed, approved, and constructed through the neighborhood committee – such as when they are built – so the initial starter home does have an outdoor storage unit attached to the rear of the garage. Central air, forced air heating, electric appliances included. Plus each home in the neighborhood will have private access to the park on their side of the river. (The marina is open to the public for rental of dock space and daily use.) Neighborhood residents have docking fees and marina membership at no cost. The bridge itself, like the actual roadways through the neighborhood, are town property – between the two towns of the two states. Home buyers will live on a private roadway that loops from the town road, and connects to the park. So, to sum this up, if you are interested, or know anyone, for $163,000… I know someone that sells bridges.
New lawn drainage issue never had before? Advice Please. This year a neighboring house had new landscaping put in. We are experiencing an area of our grass water logged/soggy/pooling . Not where new landscaping put in.But off an existing bed. Walking out my gate on our property I lost my shoe due to the pooling/muddy grass. Repeatedly,Found mulch in our grass this year- never in past I observed an already existing bed closest to our home/property line appears built up/mound/pitch changed from when we first bought this home. (We bought home from an engineer whose blood/sweat/tears produced gorgeous landscaping, 4 gutter downspouts, a paver patio/walk, and a french drain in a down sloping area to drain a low area away from neighbors linking to drainage lines ) all things that I heard/read help enhance drainage. Never thought we would have drainage issues Concerned that grass cannot absorb this. is waterlogged. Our grass is flooded. I am hoping it is just due to a few rainy fall weeks but concerned. Any one had this problem? I read with aeration and sandy soil one can improve drainage of their existing grass. Also thinking of getting a rain barrell for closest gutter on our property so that I can collect rain water from our home. Which would make our hedges and 1 large tree assist the grass area in the uptake. Trying not to go landscape design/engineer route for this appear minor for now (I hope). Litigation is also not first choice either not certain we can prove that it was known to drain on our property. I hate to think it was planned to drain on our property. As mulch is running off on our grass, did landscaper overcompensate and it will self correct? Thankfully at this time does not appear to affect our foundation/basement but of course concerned. But one should be able to use their walk path whether grass or not to exit yard. I know that home had some basement flooding issue and do not want those types of problems. Our former talented owner addressed drainage, basement crack (repair) my sump pump has never turned on. Advice? Thank you
feedback on business idea? I currently own a landscape design/maintenance business and am looking for a better niche during these hard times. I have developed an idea and am looking for some feedback on the idea. ( I am not looking for new ideas, just feedback). I want to appeal to those in downtown and more historical urban settings, usually with very minimal yard space. Many of my clients live in lofts and have roof top gardens rather than usual yards. I create retreats geared to the individual clients personality and needs. I also create spaces in small areas that clients never thought was possible. Another unique thing that I do is bring the inside out (living spaces, outdoor kitchens, sometimes outdoor showers) and the outside in (water features, plant displays, green environments, and fresh floral arrangements). So I would love to gather some feedback on market acceptance, and what people think of my ideas. My goal of this is to get people to spend time in their 'space'. Considering it is hard for most of us to go out and do things all the time in this economy, I want people to feel relaxed and away from their everyday stressful lives in their own home, yard, roof, or loft patio, without having to leave and go elsewhere to receive this enjoyment The reason for me wanting some feedback is I would like to get an additional loan for advertising and marketing purposes, so I need a little bit of research to back me up, any feedback is welcome. Thank you. 38 minutes ago

Please help with suggestions for backyard landscaping, design.? I am having a lot of trouble deciding on a design, and features for my backyard. It is a pie shaped lot on a cul-de-sac. I live in Southern Ontario, Canada. Here are some pictures and a 'map' of my yard: http://backyardquestion.googlepages.com/backyard I have an easement (5 feet) on both sides (not the back) of my property, so any permanent structures are out - but, and plants, walkways, etc are okay - they can be temporarily moved if absolutely needed. I am planning on building a shed this year - fairly large and placing in in the top right of the yard as pictured above (near the #6) Some things we want are: Interesting plants. Some maintainence is okay, but we don't have time to spend hours every weekend - an intensive spring/fall cleanup is okay Walkway of some kind - preferrably no poured concrete Patio area. I am thinking of a small area (~15 feet wide circle, interlock brick, with built in firepit in middle More details at the website link. Thank

Is it polite? Due to a recent visit from the Queen, upon which I had the fortune to represent my Local OAP Club on our recent and most welcome Lottery Funded addition to our fine Club, a beautifully restored and superbly Landscaped new Patio and Garden Table and Chair set, reminiscent of the Victorian fashion of that glorious time, which naturally warranted a visit from HM. . . I had the ghastly misfortunate of forgetting to put me old Falsies in! Also, I forget to chew up a Mars Bar. Instead of flashing me Charming Ivories and a Witticism designed to dazzle our Dear Lady, out came this Bloody Brown thing which slowly tumbled out me face like a Lazy Salamander. Hers was a picture let me say. Oooof! Well, is that IMPOLITE in her eyes, or maybe she knows the trials of people with said lack of teeth and such? OOoooooof!
Interior Staging or Designing (What to Do)? Is their a fundamental interior design practice, to arrange walls and or furniture so that you have a direct path to the back door from the front door? In this I mean, no path through the living area or kitchen area. Would you semi squeeze the living furniture arrangement to enhance the pathway around the back of the furniture, when you could walk between the furniture or go through the kitchen. This is only important if you intend to, come in the front and with out stopping, go out the back. I am confused with a recent professional stagers' suggestions for a residence that is listed for sale. They are focusing on the view out the back. Their is windows near the patio door that views out, to the rear landscaping and decorated patios. They want buyers to be drawn to look at that. And we do have nice furniture and hardwood floors. The possible eye sore could be the TV. It is not a Thin Flat Screen. Any input is appreciated.

How to become a license contractor? Ok I have tried to google this but I can't seem to find anything on how to become a licensed contractor. I have done a few DIY projects growing up, building decks, patios, demo, likes of designs and crafts... I know that I am far from being a professional contractor and I wouldn't try to work on anyone's house with the experience I have, but I want to know how to go about LEARNING more of the actual building and crafting that goes with contracting. I heard there isn't much schooling for it but i don't know of any other way to learn. I plan on asking different contractors around where i live if they would like a part time worker for the summer or even a volunteer just so i can learn more. I am asking anyone who is a contractor how they become it. How did you learn all the stuff you know. I know i want to specialized in bathrooms and kitchens, or landscaping. I see all the shows on DIY like bathtastic, yard crashers...I want to know how to become those guys. Please any help would be amazing cause i am really stuck on this. Thanks

I want to make an offer of 230,000. Is that considered too low 100,000 off their asking price. I tried to talk to my relator and she just tells me " she cant tell us that information, or she doesnt know, or their relator wont give that information out" its a small town and we dont want to get another relator since we would see her in time to come. do you think 230 is a fair offer if we present it with similar homes in the area selling for less? We want to offer 230,000 and they can take the entertainment center and swing set....but appliances stay We want to offer 230,000 and they can take the entertainment center and swing set....but appliances stay
Has anyone in the Horticulture, Landscaping, or Architecture field seen a design like this before? (drawing)? I have a reoccurring dream of a mansion I wish I owned. The mansion is a U shape with a large opening in the center leading to the back yard. All rooms along the center have full glass panel walls looking into the center area. The center is the focus of this questions because nobody seems to have heard of something similar. You are in a room facing the center area. There is a door leading to a small patio in the center. You exit the house and there is a small cement path leading to a long path in the center. every door leading to the center area has a path leading to the center walkway. The strange thing, however, is that where there should be grass there are little concrete boxes built into the ground the same size as the square concrete the walkway is made out of. Each of these boxes is filled with water and has an assortment of fish. They are also full of water plants. So as you exit the house and walk along the pathway you are surrounded by pods filled with water and fish and topped with luscious plants. has anyone seen or heard of a design like this? and if so does anyone know the name of the style or have pictures of the real thing? Here is a conceptual drawing for those who wish not to read or want a visual. i50 . tiny pic . com / 50idc l. jpg take out the spaces, you know yahoo won't let you post links
Are you business oriented? what have you tried? Ever since I was little I wanted to be in business, whatever it was. When i was 14 I put away shopping carts at local grocery store collecting quarters, just a friend of mine and me, we made just about minimum wage that we were damn happy with being unable to get a job due to age. Then I tried my lawncare business lol good times. I had my flyers made, business card printed, name in the phonebook, it was fun and good life experience, but didn't really make much money, i miss those times though Now I just started my landscaping/a bit of contracting company, decks, fences, patios, interlocking, natural stones, and just overall designing aspect, demolition, basement waterproofing, and I LOVE IT. Well of course it's winter and i'm disabled for a bit but this year we're gonna hit it off big, my parter and I already financed a bobcat. What have you tried personally? I'm not talking about dealing drugs or getting a job.
Does this sound like it would be a nice house for a family? I have a project where I have to design a home for a family of at least 3 people. My family I am designing for has 3 people and a dog. A mom, a dad, and a teenage girl. Here is what the house includes: Basement: One medium sized room, with a large space for a TV and several spaces for chairs and sofas. Also a closet, that has about 3 long shelves. Main Floor: 1 bathroom, a kitchen, and a small dining room. The living room is off of the dining room and the computer room is just next to the kitchen. It also has a patio and a small, fenced in yard with lots of landscaping area. Upstairs level: In the master bedroom there is one bathroom, a walk in closet and a hang off space big enough for a bed and a dresser. Also on this floor is another room complete with a full bathroom, and a non walk in closet. The last room has a walk in closet, and is a fairly small bedroom. That's all! What is your opinion? Oh and there is a small shed behind the 2 car garage!
