If I put a portable air conditioner at the end of hall, will it cool house? I have a small house and I plan on having the vent from the bedroom window at the end of the hall with the portable air conditioner at the end of the hall (assuming I can get one that has an exhaust hose that is 5-7 feet long. If I have the doors throughout hallway closed, can it keep the living room and kitchen at other end of hall cool. The hallway is about 14 feet long. Small house.

Will making a channel of cold water cool down my house or will the humidity make it hotter? To cool down my house, I plan on making a huge river that runs from my tap, circles my entire room several times until going down the drain. The water from the tap is always cold because it comes from underground, so I figured it can absorbed the heat from my room before going back into the sink. Imagine a web of water on the floor of my room (don't worry about practicality or waste of water), it's the concept I'm worried about. Will the water make my room more humid and therefore warmer? Could you live in a tiny, tiny house? I was just looking at some pretty cool plans for really small, but efficient houses, starting at, like 100 sqare feet, But some of these had lofts., or second stories. If I had a nice Garage or shop to put all my Stuff in, I could live in the small house.

We were one of the few families who managed to keep our ancestors' homestead property. The small, modest homes that dated back to the late 1800's have mostly been torn down, with just a handful being suitable for restoration. Although it's not yet a written restriction, the developers that are beginning to come in will be trying to build homes in keeping with the style of the original community (small farm house & victorian cottage). Screen window for dog house to keep cool? We live in a warm climate and I'm looking for ways to keep our dog cool in the summer. She already has a pool in her kennel, but we are building her a new dog house. I am planning on raising it about 2 inches off the ground, putting two vents on the highest part to let warm air escape, but I am also thinking of putting in a screen for a window, that maybe we could cover in the window with shutters? How long should it take for the house to cool after an AC repair? For several months, the air conditioner hasn't been working properly, but it didn't become a huge problem until it quit entirely about three weeks ago. Since then, our house has become hotter than the outside most days (once the indoor temp reached over one hundred). What is the best time of year to have a house constructed? My wife and I are selling our current house and have already purchased another piece of property on which we plan to have a house built. We live in Mississippi and according to some contractors I have spoke with, the going rate for heated/cooled right now is $80 a sq. ft. and $50 a sq. ft. for non-heated/cooled.(i.e. garage, porches). cool club house ideas? we are building a back yard club house. it is going to be in the air and elavated off the ground but not in a tree. the plan is complex. it is supported by 4 cemented in poles in the ground. it will have a ladder to get in and when you are in if you look up you will see a fairly large hatch in the ceiling. and if you crawl in the hatch you will see the second floor. we want it to be sealed enough that you could actually leave stuff like bean bags in it to hang out. do you think this would work? any suggestions? do you think we could make it like that without the worry of it being instable? this will be greatly appreciated:) thanks-livie

why does my house stay hot in winter? I bought a house in the desert, so I planned on it being hot in the summer, but here it is 11pm nearly Thanksgiving, with an outside temperature of 50 degrees, and I have yet to use the heat. It's 77 degrees inside, the same as it was at noon. I actually had to turn the AC on for a few minutes to cool it to 75. Could this be just simply insulation that's too effective, or possibly a stroke, lol? Although I viewed the current temperature on the thermostat, and it read 77 degrees.

Can a propane grill be stored in the house when not is use? I am planning on buying one. I would use it in the backyard and let it cool completely before bringing it inside. Under normal circumstances I would store it in my backyard but I have no way of locking my gate. I fear someone stealing my grill yet I don't know how safe it is to store propane in the house. If I had a large window air-conditioner could I cool my whole house? I plan on getting central air but right now I about going to get a 15,000 btu air conditioner for my 350 sf downstairs. Upstairs is about about another 350 sf. and has a smaller 8000 btu unit in one bedroom. My question is this: Could I use my forced hot air unit (without the heat) to somehow circulate the air evenly throughout the house? I mean the 15000 is overkill downstairs. How difficult is it to take care of a Victorian house? So my dream house has always been a large Victorian house with a turret. Air Conditioning Not Cooling House? My A/C stopped cooling the house yesterday. No matter how low we set it, it is almost 90 degrees in the house. There is somewhat cool air coming out the vents but it's not as cold as it has been and it's not coming out very strong. Do you think it's a filter problem? Window air conditioner: Cool Only or Heat and Cool? I need to get a new window air conditioner unit and I want to know if I should just get a cooling unit or a heat and cool unit. The house is 900 square feet and is pretty well insulated. For cooling I am planning on going with about 12,000 BTUs; the last unit we had was like 10,000 BTUs and almost 30 years old, so a newer 12,000 BTU system should do fine for cooling. My real question is whether or not one of these units can effectively heat 900 sqft. On a 12,000 BTU system the heating BTUs are 11,000. How many BTUs should I need to heat a home of this size? We have a wall furnace that heats well, but I am not sure if that is more or less efficient than an electric heater or heat pump. So what do you think I should do in this situation? Thanks. What to do with 3d glasses in haunted house? Just curious with the season coming up, If anyone has any ideas on what to do with 3d glasses? I like the idea and I'm planning on a "clown" theme for one of the rooms, but just curious what cool effects or stuff can be used with the 3d glasses? I know neon colors are a good idea. Was thinking about getting Neon glow in the dark paint, and splatting it everywhere, but... just curious if anyone has any ideas? comments? Plans For Halloween Night - 10 POINTS? Do these plans sound dorky too you. Do I need to run my dehumidifier in the basement this fall & winter? I live in Minnesota so the summers are humid & the winters are drier so I don't know if I need to dehumidify as the weather gets cooler... My house was built in 1927 and I have an unfinished concrete basement. No sump pump, and it's been dry for a while (they re-graded the earth around the base of the house a couple years ago). We plan on finishing the basement this winter also, FYI. Any advice is appreciated!

Fridgedaire refrigerator ice maker works intermittenly.? My parents have a Fridgedaire refrigerator with an icemaker installed in it. Ice maker was an aftermarket kit installed after the unit was in place for a few years. A few weeks ago I went over to their house planning to move the fridge out, turn off the water and unhook the water supply line, water back on to see if line is plugged, etc. As I was moving 'stuff' out of the way in preparation to gain access in the back of the fridge when my father opened the freezer door to discover it had started making ice again. I was just over there again today and it has stopped making ice again. It has the cooling coils mounted on the rear of the cabinet which are pretty much sealed-up and my mom has cleaned them often. Although it made ice for a couple of weeks to a month, my dad says it doesn't keep ice cream as hard as it used to. He also says the fan seems to run a lot any more. Defrost cycle stuck on? Any appliance repair guys out there?

A/C troubles in a Brand New House, please help..? Hello Folks.. I'm living in a 18 month old house with 2370 Sq Feet living area. The living & dining rooms, kitchen & breakfast rooms have 12 ft. ceilings, the rest of house has 9 ft. ceilings. There is a 12x14ft bonus room and full bath upstairs above my garage. My A/C unit is only 3.5 tons and there is only one unit for the whole house but there is a thermostat in the master bedroom downstairs and a thermostat upstairs in the bonus room. The evaporator in the attic is a 4 ton (13 SEER unit). We have had the A/C folks out here DOZENS of times trying to get the system to cool the house properly. The worst problem is upstairs. By 12 noon on a typical southern summer day (Louisiana) it will be 80 degrees and will get as high as 84 degrees by 2pm if the outside temp is in the high to mid 90's, even though the unit will run non-stop during the day and nearly all night some nights. The most unusual "fix" they have tried is to replace the Blower/Furnace with a 5 ton unit in order to increase the air flow to at least 1400 CFM (prior is was less than 1200 CFM). Since they changed the blower, downstairs doesn't seem to be a big problem but upstairs continues to be a problem. BUT, it seems that the Humidity level is Way too High.. It never gets below 60% relative humidity and will frequently get as high as 65% depending on outside humidity. From everything i have read, 60% is too high for indoor humidity levels. Could this be caused by forcing 5 tons of air through a 4 ton evaporator? The A/C company has begun to refuse to work on this issue any more other than offering to Upgrade my compressor to a 4 ton but they want me to pay them $1,000 for the upgrade. They claim this will fix everything because the air will be MUCH cooler. However, a neighbor of mine had this done to his identical floor plan and he is STILL having trouble cooling his bonus room. The A/C company and the general contractor are now being hauled into court by several residents of my neighborhood with similar cooling issues that they can't seem to get resolved. Can someone offer some advice or insight as to these problems? Thanks! Al Is 60% relative humidity TOO High for indoors? What SHOULD the humidity indoors be? What are good, small house plants? I have 2 small. . . .maybe 8 inch pots, that are really cool - tropical with monkees on them. I would like to plan something in them that will grow indoors, looks cool and well do well for a long time in pots this small. Any recommendations?

Best way to cool a room? I have central air in my house, but the insulation is terrible, and I have very high ceilings. This makes it hard to keep the house cool. Most of the time I can deal with it by using extra fans, etc., but my bedroom is just unbearably hot at night. I am thinking about buying either one of those window air conditioner units or one of those portable ones. Has anyone had experience with either of these? I know it would up my electric bill no matter which I use, but I really only plan on turning it on at night when I go to sleep.

I'm 24, I was going to get house, I can afford, but then I wouldn't have money to have fun? I just paid 600 to get out a plan to get a home. I make enough money to get house, so I decided to get a real big cool one. But when I was in the process of the getting the loan I regretted it. For the time in my life I have money, I'm buying sutff like soccer balls, footballs, baseball equipment, rockclimbing equipment, good rollerblades, I can save and maybe go to China, or make a trip to Japann. I always wanted trampoline, and I can get one. I can afford things now like going horseback riding, going scuba, I lvoe being able to afford bowling, and even pay for someone else's dinner. I was going to lose all that if I had gone ahead and taken the loan to get the house. I just wouldn't be able to afford spoiling myself. Am I stupid for backing down?

Should I replace my oil furnace or buy a heat pump? I live in southwestern VA and we have cold winters. I also want air conditioning and have heard I may still have to use a window unit in the upstairs bedrooms. I'm afraid the heat will be cold and the AC will not cool. I am planning on only one unit for a 2 story house. Also, is there a difference in metal ducts and fiberglass ducts? Thanks!

What should you do when at the start of season the Central AC seems very slow to cool? Any tips? I bought a house in upstate NY in Dec, The prior owner installed Central AC last summer (2007) integrated with the existing forced air heating system. It worked fine on house inspection. A few days ago it was a very humid night & my house was somewhat warm (78) but the humidity made it feel worse. Outside it was only 70 so I tried to open up more windows to cool the house but that wasn't doing the trick so I closed the windows and started up the Central AC. It came on, & I could feel it but it seemed to take a rather large amount time to cool expecially since it was actually a bit cooler outside. It eventually did cool the house & get rid of the humidity. I am trying to figure out if that is normal at the start of the season. 1 person said it needs run it for 24 hrs or so before it reaches it peak efficiency. Perhaps it needs a new filter (I am planning to bring in HVAC guy for a tune up to make sure its ok) but is this normal? Anyone have tips to start the cooling season? thanks Additional details: Filter, yes I would like to change it but I have no idea how and so at least initially I need the HVAC to show me how to do it. Plus, I just want to make sure as baseline everything is working properly (yeah it may costs a few bucks, but the more efficient it run the less electric it will need). I already have a programmable thermostat and intend to use. I programed it for winter and will set up something for the cooling season. I have a ceiling fan in my bedroom and I use it and will continue to do so. The other day when I tried it wasn't that hot (I could handle the 78 temp esp with the fan, it was the humidity that made it feel awful). When I first used it was on a day that was not that hot (just humid) and in fact outside was already cooler (70). It just took a while which was a concern causes when its 95 this weekend I really need it to work. And during the summer I plan to leave it, but set at high temp (84-86) when not home. Above in the addtional details when I said HVAC, I meant HVAC service person (not the system). I have scheduled the person to come take a look but I still welcome your thoughts and tips. Thanks.

Shouldn't you feed friends that you invite to your house on your dime? I was brought up understanding that when you have guests in your house, whether its family or friends, it is proper to feed your guests. We are not talking a course meal but you should not ask them to go "halfsies" on take out or the grocery bill if they run out to get things for your visit. Once in awhile its cool to order chinese food or pizza but not every single time you visit! I have this friend (who makes good money, mind you) who for years has always asked people to bring food and/or drink with them when you come over to visit and its drives me crazy! We are planning to see each other soon at her house and I know she's gonna ask for stuff. I'm thinking of coming clean and telling her how inappropriate this is when its constant. Gas central heating left on continuous? This will be my first winter with gas central heating. I have been given advice that it is cheaper to leave it on continuously on a comfortable 20 degrees C (when in the house) rather than having it come on for three hours at 23 degrees C in the morning from cold, then cool back down, then on for four hours in the evening, again from cold. Is this true? It is a two bedroom open plan detached house.

Any suggestions for materials to use for building an eco-friendly house? I'm planning to build a house (about 1400 square feet) that will hopefully be mostly off the power grid. What sorts of non-toxic building materials and (or) viable forms of sustainable energy generating sources for heating, cooling, and lighting a house can you recommend? I already have a cabin in the woods with kerosene lanterns, a fire place, and a wood burning stove. Bamboo is an excellent material (for flooring)...but quartz crystals? You may be on to something. Atlanteans supposedly used quartz to harness energy...but that technology is lost to us now, if in fact it ever existed.

How effective is a SCENTED ceiling fan? (I am thinking a bit outside the box, here. - But please allow me a moment.) I sit indoors with my central air unit cooling off the house and I run my ceiling fan with it to accomplish the same. I am tempting to use some sort of scenting attachment to put on my ceiling fan blades to make my office smell nicer. How effective are these pads? I have seen these pads (strips?) that attach to the ceiling fan for this purpose. I am more "tech-savvy" (O.K. - I'm REDNECK!) than to buy a pre-scented "do it only this way" unit. I plan to make my own device for this purpose. And which scent smells the best for my business office? - I hope to scent a calming scent with a bit of (I think it is Cherry?) to entice my clients to spend money. Thanks!

Keeping the kitty cool? I am moving to a third floor appartment. Its a very small place and I have one a/c unit and it cools the whole place (its a 2 room + bathroom place... not much to cool there).. However, this past weekend my boyfriend and I were doing some painting (we got a cut in the rent if we did the painting ourselves) and it got SUPER hot up there w/out the a/c on! I work 6 hour days 3 days a week and 8 hour days 2 days a week.. I will keep the a/c on while I am home but not when I leave for work (a friend of our family burnt her house down and it was linked to the a/c) .. I will be keeping the blinds closed to keep the sun out (of course i'll leave one blind only half closed so that the cat can look outside)..and I'm planning on leaving him several bowls of water with ice cubes in it to keep it nice and cold... Do you think he'll be okay? hes going to be 2 years old in a few days.. hes short hair.. 15lbs (a little chubby but the vet says its normal)

Flat Roof-Repair or Replace it? Want to sell house.? have a house that I wish to sell. The roof part over the attached back porch has begun leaking. Roof is about 15 years old, and roof on house no where is leaking at all , only over porch. So far I have a verbal estimate only from a roofing guy to patch for 350.00 ( but he will not write it up, so I am leery, what if he gets up there and decide to do whole roof and I have no written anything?) and one for 900.00 from a known roofing company ( to patch all cracks and loose areas found-no warranty) but he has written me 2 proposal/estimates, along with copies of insurance papers and licenses. 900.00 for patching seems high.. The other option was to cover it with an elostometric (sp) rubber coating ( white cool roof material) which comes with a 10 yr warranty and 1 yr labor warrenty for over 5000.00. Total roof replacement is 10,000. which seems high to me for a flat roof. I am in MO. Flat roof i have now is basically black tar. I plan to put house for sale next month. don't want to put a whole lot of money in the house. I want to sell it as is anyway, since the house was given to me, but it needs lots of maintence work ( painting, cleaning, etc), cause owner was sick and elderly and unable to keep house up. Rest of house is in pretty fair shape. How much should a roof repair and replace run generally for a flat roof ( no shingles) Thanks!

How should I house my rabbit? OUTSIDE: I think my rabbits would have a blast outside! i will only keep them out here for spring & fall though. Their hutch would be very large and have an outdoor run connected to it, or just seperate. It gets very warm where I live but not scorching hot, it doesn't get above 95. If it does, i will move it into my cool garageor in my house that day. I am also scared wild animals such as raccoons will get it. The hutch is made of solid wood except for the opening is like wire. What do I do? INSIDE: My mom said I cannot keep them inside because they will poop everywhere, ( they are not trained yet) and she doesn't want one in her house. She said in thr fall and winter i am allowed to keep them inside till next spring I will build them a cage and take a playpen and make an indoor run.They will have a blast inside, but i can't keep them in in the warm months PLAN: Should I keep them outside in their safe hutch, in Spring & summer then in the fall & winter keep them inside? help! What new features would you like to see in World of Warcraft? Hello! I play World of Warcraft a lot and was wondering if any of you had any ideas of cool new features you would like to see added. I have a few. The first would be have a new race/class unlocked when you reach the maximum level so there is even more incentive to get there. I also want player housing (which I heard they are planning on adding later on in the future) and multiple hearthstone where you could set them to come to a certain grinding area or trainer. For the new race I think they should be something fun such as a centaur or murlock race. What do you think?
