Pros and Cons of Split Level House? What are some pros and cons of building and owning a Split Level house such as this one http://www.architecturaldesigns.com/split-level-house-plan-9284vs.asp If you were to build a Split Level house, would this be cheaper than a bungalow or two storey of the same square footage? Or something like this http://www.architecturaldesigns.com/split-level-house-plan-3600dk.asp I also don't like the stairs right in the entrance, so I would not get a split level that was like that. More something along these lines.

My neighborhood has a lot of costum built homes and since my house is one of the few bungalows left i would like to tear that down and built a brand new home. Looking for ready made (pre designed), plans for self build houses in the UK.? Are any of you knowledgeable people out there aware of any websites for Architects or other organisations who hold stocks of ready drawn plans for houses and bungalows that conform to basic UK planning and building regulations? I need to submit an application for outline planning permission to a local planning authority, on a piece of land that I already own, but which at present has a bungalow standing on it. Although the current building is still useable and quite easily capable of being improved, modernised, and extended, I think that the land will be worth more as a building plot with permission for a larger dwelling to be built (possibly a four or even five bedroomed house with garrage etc. I know that there are companies that supply such plans from their own catalogue of designs but don't really know what they might be listed under, other than Architects of course. The companies can be located anywhere of course as long as the actual plans conform to British standards.
Where can I find free house plan online for a lot area of 120 square meters? Bungalows and two-storey residential house plans..
Where can I find these floor plans? I have looked all on the internet trying to find house plans, but they all seem to carry the same designs. I am looking for floor plans that are craftsman or bungalow or farmhouse. Something that is very unique, not your basic here's the kitchen, there's the living room...I can't find them anywhere,,,I know they exist because I have seen these homes in movies and always wonder-where do you get floor plans like that!!! How does one get planning permission to buy a property then knock it down and rebuild a new house? There is this bungalow for sale with near me. I am thinking about adding a bungalow to my property....? I've found a plan for a bungalow which matches the architectural style of my house very well and will add approx. 480 sq ft of living space to the total property. We live in a semi-mature neighborhood with property prices in the 180s to 240s and square footage from 1700 to 3000. Spatially and from a landscaping perspective, the bungalow would work well in my backyard and still leave me a large, grassy area for baby #1 (here) and baby #2 (planned) to play in. I'd use the bungalow for an office and guesthouse. The approximate total cost is about $50K. I purchased my house for $146K and it has been appraised at $156K. We've made some very cost-effective, DIY improvements in the home and it is architecturally in line with the higher value homes in the neighborhood. This addition would bring my total living area to approx. 2000 sq ft. My question is...financially, would this addition make sense? All opinions and thoughts would be appreciated!!

Planning permission on rented house? OK, i currently rent a house with like 1 acre of land of a family of 2 brothers and 1 sister. Recently the sister put in a planning application to knock down the bungalow and replace it with 3, new houses. This will be the 3rd time that she has put the application in and the first two times it was refused on the grounds of some trees being in the way. Now she has solved this by making sure the trees will not be in the way of building the house, this is why she wants to knock the bungalow down. Do i have any rights what so ever as i have rented this house off them for like 2 years and think it would be such a shame to knock down this house. O yeah and most of the neighbours have opposed this as they dont want 3 horrible new houses built by their house. Im scared that the council are just going to say soddit and give her the application cus they cant be arsed to keep making decisions every year on the same application. Any help would be kindly appreciated Thank You Sorry if this is a bit confusing, i worte it really quickly and didnt really know how to word it properly :s it was their mother's house, she bought it quite a while ago cus she loved animals and it has like a massive garden witha wooded area attached. When the mother died, she passed it on to her kids who decided to rent it out
has anyone used mylar in attic now being insulated to reflect heat back? I am rehabbing a wood bungalow house that has one gable roof side getting sun all day long. I plan to tape mylar over the insulation between the joists under the drywall to reflect heat radiation back to the outside. Has anyone ever tried this?
what is the differences between a bungalow, a cottage and a single-storey building? I'm a wee bit confused, I am doing a cost plan for a project, there are flats and 2 types of houses - houses with a ground floor and an upper floor, and houses with just a ground floor. Is a single storey building the one with the GF only and the other be a 2 storey?
I want to build a small house inexpensively - need advice, please! I want to build a small, bungalow-style 1-bedroom 1-bath house (maybe 400 sq. ft.) on land that I already own... maybe something like this: http://www.houseplans.com/plan_details.asp?id=14649#floorplans Because of zoning laws, I can't just build any old shack, and need to "do it right". I really can't afford to hire a professional contractor, and I don't have the skills to do it myself. Does anyone have experience with "hybrid" construction, where a contractor was used for some things, and the homeowner did other things? Trying to do this as inexpensively as possible, yet still obtain a quality structure. Water, sewer and electricity are already available on-site.
Are there houseowner swap sites for within UK ? For example I would like to swap a large flat in Bristol for a tiny house or bungalow in Devon, Surely there are sites of the same plan as dating agencies. Perhaps someone needs to start this.
Average cost of materials for building a house? My boyfriend and I plan on getting married next year, at which time we will move in together. I've been looking at housing prices for already-built homes, and came across some empty lot prices at the same time. They seem pretty reasonably priced, and I thought about building our own home instead of buying one that is already built. However, I have no idea how much materials would cost. But my family does own a lumber company, so the cost of all lumber (wood) is of no significance. I'm wondering how much it costs for things like the foundation, concrete, insulation, roofing, siding, etc. I don't know how much difference this makes, but we only plan on having a bungalow. We do not want a two-storey house. I do not need to know the costs for contents of the house. I'm only looking for the cost of materials. We will probably be able to build ourselves, for the most part, as our families both are quite handy.
Will i get planning permission? I'm buying a detached house with large garden surrounding it so want to replace the attached side garage with a double extension and hopefully wrap round the rear with it too. It would be still a good 5 metres or so from next door and probably 15 metres from the bungalow behind. What factors would cause the planning dept to refuse?
Can a house that is about to fall into the sea be a work of art as the ultimate property crash? What would you like to write in a letter to pin to the wall of this house? Thu, Dec 31 07:21 PMA British artist has bought a clifftop house in northern England in order to document its expected collapse into the sea as a work of art. Kane Cunningham, a landscape painter, bought the house at Knipe Point near Scarborough, North Yorkshire, for 3,000 pounds ($4,770) and plans to install cameras in its rooms to film the ultimate property crash, British media reported. Cunnningham, 48, head of the fine art degree course at Yorkshire Coast College, said the house symbolised "lost dreams, financial disaster and threatening sea levels". "People might ask 'can a house that is about to fall into the sea be a work of art?' I say it can," the Times newspaper quoted him as saying. The artist is using the bungalow as a studio and has completed two paintings of the property and the view over Cayton Bay below as part of the work entitled: "Last Post". Cunningham is hoping that local artists, poets and musicians will brave the unsteady ground and come up with with ideas about how the project could develop.Members of the public are also invited to send letters, which will be pinned to the wall as part of the work, then destroyed as it disappears. http://in.news.yahoo.com/137/20091231/778/tod-uk-artist-to-document-real-life-prop.html Edit: Duirmuid - now that would be a crash... Edit: Bear - Such eloquence...! : )
Can I buy my grandmother's house without a mortgage? I am looking into buying my grandmother's house, which she owns outright, as she is planning to move into a bungalow. I have been lead to believe that it is possible to construct a strict mortgage repayment agreement whereby my grandmother would act as the bank meaning I would have to pay interest on top of the repayments, but I was wondering if it would be possible to pay off the house in an ad hoc manner depending on how much money I could spare each month until the house valuation is met, with my grandmothers agreement of course. Also would my grandmother be the legal owner of the property up until the point when I make the final payment? I am assuming my grandmother would have to sell me the property at the current market value to avoid any inheritance tax complications, is that right? I am not looking to rip off my grandmother, I am just wanting to know where we both stand legally in this situation.
How much would it cost to have my chimney stack removed from my bungalow? I live in the North West. The house is a dormer bungalow and we already have scaffolding up as the roof is being reslated. The chimney is pebble dashed and I'm told in a bad state and we will be better off having it removed and capped. We do not use this chimney since we had the gas boiler removed a couple of years ago. Is it going to cost me a fortune? Also will we need planning permission? Thanks Yep, the roofers are going to get a builder in to look at it tomorrow and they will give me a quote then - I just wanted a ballpark figure before then so I can work out if it is a fair quote or not.
What colour schemes for decorating rooms are fashionable at the moment? I'm planning on painting rooms in a new house we're buying. It's a semi-modern (1970s) dormer bungalow so not looking for anything cottagey/victorian nor ultra modern!

Extension - Do I need planning permission? We would like to extend our kitchen and bathroom on our bungalow, the extension would be one storey and would not be viewable from any road as our garden backs onto fields with 60ft trees between. Any idea of costs for the extension including a nice new kitchen and bathroom? UK answers only please. Thank you!
My neighbour renovated his house illegally &invaded my privacy.Which govt department can I seek help from? My neighbour rebuilt his bungalow recently. The balcony is way too near my house and if robbers entered his house, they can cross over to my house from the balcony. I remember that Malaysian government has set rules regarding distance between houses. There must be at least 9 feet I think ? I am not too sure what is the minimum distance. I have advised my neighbour to redesign his balcony but he is very ignorant and I think he did not submit his new plan for approval. If he did, it wouldn't get approved by the way he designs his house. The main problem now is that my privacy has been invaded and I feel insecure with possibilities of robbers coming into my house through his house. Can anyone tell me which government department deals with housing problems and where to refer to the appropriate housing renovation guidelines ? Thanks.
how do you know that your house is your dream house? as i have asked, how do you know that your house is your dream house? i'm having a bit of a trouble with it, you see, my husband and i are looking for a house, we are very stable and we've saved enough money to have our dream home, at the moment though our dream home is only a 2 bedroom bungalow and the problem is that we're planning to have 4 years, do you think that i should wait until i already have kids or when my kids move out of our home? i feel like if we build our dream home now, it'll go to waste because i know that we'll move out in a few years because of space issues.. when should we build our dream home then? and would you pay for a $200,000 lot considering the location of a lot? and can you demolish a semi-duplex home?
I am trying to determine best way to add space to second floor of my bungalow? I have a 1920's bungalow that right now has 2 bedrooms upstairs. The chimney rooms smack down the middle of the house. There is a another roof line that pitches the opposite of main roof creating eaves or attic space in the front of house. This space has been finished to create walk in closets and bath. The back of the house has a lot of wasted space with the pitch of the roof line. If I raise the roof and bring it straight out, what's the best floor plan for accomodating the chimney in the middle. Ideally, I'd like to add another bath and bedroom.
Care home for elderly UK, plans, cost? My mother in law is getting a bit old and slower with bad hips, she started using walking stick. She resides in a property owned by her husband(they have seperated 12 years ago) but doesn't own any assets on her own. Even tho my father in law agrees the house to be sold and she buy herself a bungalow in exchange, that he will still own, she is adamant the only way out of that house is in a home when she can't manage stairs or in the crem(she hopes for) due to it being her home. Despite the life improvement it will be if she moved in a single floor residense and closer to the kids she doesn't want to hear. Living with any of her kids is out of the question too as she claims she would be inconvinience. There is no way convincing her otherway, when we try talking to her she shuts us out and puts the care home on the table. Now, neither of us is rich and we can't afford to pay for the care if it ame for her to go in a home for elderly, nor can she, she has nothing to her name. How does the care home thing work? I never had to face anything like this before. How do we found out, what we are looking to pay for it too, or where do I seek advice? The town council? Social services?
My mum is wanting to move to another council house can we stay in her old house? Me and my girlfriend moved in my mum when we came into financial difficulties 6 months ago. She lives in a 4 bed council house. She's getting on a bit now and wants to move to a bungalow. Me and my girlfriend aren't on the tenancy and are planning to start a family when we get back on our feet. Can we stay on in the house we're living in now with my mum or not? What are the rules regarding this? Sorry, I'm 23 and my girlfriend is 25. We would consider moving into a smaller council house but don't know if they would offer us one seeing as we're not on the tenancy?
How Do I Properly House-Train My Daschund? I recently bought a 7 month old male Daschund, Jasper, from a reputable breeder, Lindenwood Kennels. She planned to keep him and show him, but she had a double hip-replacement surgery, and was unable to do so. Because of her ailment before the surgery, properly house-training training him was out of the question. She had a lovely bungalow country home with a large, fenced yard, and she would turn the dogs out for 15 minutes, around 12 times a day. Now he's living with me and my family (me, 16, my parents and my sister, 18) and our current dog, a 5 year old red Dauschund female named Clementine, from the same breeder. But we live in Toronto, and me and my sister go to school and my parents work. Clementine was previously walked three times a day, and in good weather, let out into our backyard. Jasper has no bladder control. We walk him, he pees, we bring him back to the house, he pees again, in the house. How can we train him so that he stops peeing in the house? Clementine picked it up immediately when we got her, but with Jasper, its been a tough journey. The two get along wonderfully, and Jasper is helping Clementine lose some weight. But the peeing is a BIG problem.
plan to get on the roof of my house? I am a single mom who wants to hang xmas lights. I live in a two story...bungalow home, with a steep roof. Any advice on how to do this. I plan to use the hooks and hook the lights to the gutters...are there any "tricks to the trade", to prevent falling off the roof? I know this sounds silly, but I would like to know. Thank you, in advance for your serious responses...

What did you do when you realized your dreams are just dreams? Please help. I'm suicidal.? I'm a suicidal person right now I'm a writer too and I want/need publish novels. I'm seventeen this year and living here in the Philippines were poverty truly exists. What I've done this recent months or days were: a) I dropped out from my college degree (Nutrition and Dietetics) cause I couldn't anymore concentrate studying, I'm not happy for what I'm doing and often tell myself that I don't face the world when I'm going in school and not happy, though b) I told my parents and aunts about dropping our from college but they insist me to go or continue in another school with Educartion or whatsoever but they never understand me and never listen to me. They want what they want about me but I couldn't anymore concentrate c) Of my family's opinions made me more realized that I couldn't achieve my dreams and dreams are just dreams. I read that inventor Thomas Edison and Albert Einstein didn't have a degree in school but great people and I want to be like them. I have dreams, too, that I could only achieve it but things don't flow with me and contrast me. Anyway, I think, what people who surround me think that education plays a very important role but I believe that it was only for those ordinary people who have no dreams and just wants money in their entire lifetime. And I'm not like that. I want to achieve my dreams and it's the only thing that makes me happy for being achieved success. I'm totally depressed and don't know what to do. I plan to runawat from home but I couldn't run into anyone's house and I don't want to sell my body and it would just make me worse. I really don't know what to do. If I tell it to a therapist or a churchman, the results is still the same. I just hope that a bungalow house is built for me where I could live alone and writing novels.
Challenge: I have 3 bedroom, 1 bath bungalow built in 1920.? I have a lot of unused space upstairs due to the steep pitch of the roof. I plan to eventually dormer/raise roof in back part of house to gain new living space for a full bath and potentially another bedroom, but the front of the house has 3 pitches which I do want to alter due to changing the look of the house from outside. I have walk-in closets that have been created out of the dormered space, but still have significant space left. The center of the "room" is not quite 6ft. Has anybody installed a bathroom in such a space or do you know where I could pictures/ideas of how to maximize the space that I do have (ie: shower only, or claw foot tub w/hand-held shower?).
I live in a bungalow and my upstairs gets very hot in the summer. Would installing a fan help? I'm planning on getting some insulation blown in, and I have the option to have a fan installed. I've heard 2 different theories. One company thinks the fan would be a good solution and would assist in pulling the hot air out of the upper level. Another company told me a fan would be counter productive, because I don't have soffit vents. I have 3 square vents on the roof, and 1 on each side of the house. Those vents are not meant to take air in, and the fan motor may be strained because there won't be enough air intake due to the lack of soffit ventilation, causing it eventually to overheat and blow. Would you tend to agree with the first contractor or the second? Do you think a fan installation would allow it to stay cooler in the summer, given the fact that after the insulation is blown into the ceiling, the fan will be in a non-living quarter with no access to pull out hot air from our living quarter upstairs.
How to locate a long term apartment rental in what town in Turkey? Hello, We are a family of US citizens looking to relocate to Turkey permanently. We are trying to get ideas on what are the nicest coastal towns to live in. We are not looking for touristy areas but just nice, quaint, coastal towns that are really affordable and safe. A town with good food, markets (malls are not needed!) bus route, friendly and pretty. We would be interested in finding out how it's best to locate a nice house, villa, bungalow to rent and how much we can plan on spending. Is it possible to find a house to rent for around $700. USD (1,066.10 TRY) per month? I see a lot of villas to let but they all seemed to be listed as holiday villas etc and quite honestly too expensive for us. Our plan is to save money in Turkey, not spend more than we do here in the USA for renting a house. We need something long term. Craigslist does not have anything listed either. Would it be best to chat with locals? Newspapers once we get there? Please note, this move is not happening for at least a year or longer. We're just doing the preliminary research on the move at this time. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated! Best, Cilla Hi Maryam, This is a great site that you have sent along. Thank you! Are you familiar with how the pricing works with most of these realtors in Turkey? Is it by the day, by the week, by the month? I can easily convert the pricing to USD, I'm just not sure how often we'd be paying the $ they show. Do you know if are there other charges with rentals in Turkey? Such as maintenance. I've also read a lot of blogs that mention having to pay for the previous tenants utility bills they have left unpaid and fees that seem very different than what we pay here in the USA. We're are commonly paying for: Rent Heat Hot Water (and in some cases for water in general) Electricity Phone and/ or internet Some times we have to pay for maintenance fees for lawn and garden care, pool care as well. Generally we are not held responsible for the previous occupants bills that they have left unpaid. Thanks!
The hotels dog across from me WONT be quiet! Please help? I live in a relatively quiet cul-de-sac in a village, and before hand, lived in the middle of nowhere. Due to circumstances involving my parents, my Mum and I had to move down to the village (which I hate, but I hopefully wont be there too much longer as I plan to go to uni). The house is alot smaller, and my study desk has had to go in the front room which over looks other houses. I dont mind this, but compared to the back of the house (a bungalow) where my room is, in comparison, it is slightly noisier. The problem is we have a hotel/pub about 10 yards from us. I know the owners, they are nice, but very irresponsible with their pets. They have two dogs, again, really nice, but they let them roam around the hotel for starters in the dining rooms when people are eating. What's worse, we have a big front grass bit which is owned by the council, and I have seen on numerous occasions, the dogs foul there. It's full of dog crap everywhere due to these dogs, and people walk there, including myself sometimes, and I cant say how horrid it is to get dog dirt on your shoe. Not only this, but one of the hotel's employees (who I know and have worked with) brings her dog to the hotel everyday. It is probably the most annoying, nasty little dog I have met though. When my own dog ggoes in the front garden for a pee, it starts yapping at her, and scares her stupid (as she has been attacked before). And again, I have seen when I study by the window, that dog using the "communal" gardens as it's toilet. It has yapped and barked all this morning, giving me no peace. I am confident in my exam anyway, but wanted this weekend to fully prepare for it, not have my peace disturbed by an unfriendly little yapping Jack Russell. What should I do? Reckon I should speak to the hotel owners in private? I dont want to seem like an old biddy, but there has been too many occasions when I have seen this dog (and their own) use the communal gardens as their toilet, plus this employees dog will not be quiet (the other two dont bark). Or should I speak to this girl I know? She herself is not very nice though- I used to work beside her in a previous job with her husband. Lol, I have actually wanted to kick the little idiot! Not the other two dogs though, they're ok, but annoying for fouling. Yep, in the UK

A holiday to the maldives next year.....please help...specifics appreciated!!? Me and my partner are planning a holiday for 2 weeks AI to the maldives next year and have narrowed it down to a few islands. Vilamendhoo, club hakura (chaaya lagoon), or meedhupparu island. Am i right in thinking vilamendhoo is now lacking in beach in a lot of areas? if so where is best to stay on that island?. Club hakura looks like a superb resort, only i am lead to believe you have to take a boat to the house reef. Is this correct? and is there much to be seen in the lagoon by the water bungalows? please be as specific as possible. Finally meedhupparu has a lot of mixed reviews on the internet and i am very wary of how good this island actually is. Many thanks.
Help! I need someone in real estate to help me!!? So my fiance and I are looking at a house that is $244,000.00 CDN. I believe the house is vacant at the moment, it is in a very good area and these are some of the specs: Texas sized bungalow, very open plan, large living room & kitchen. 3 bedrooms up, unfinished bath off master. Basement has some development. Most windows replaced in 08. Plus furnace, ext doors & air conditioner, new eave troughs. & fascia, exterior paint, back yard regraded in 07, large double garage & back yard. What im wondering is, what is a good but lower offer to make on it. Remember its $244,000 Canadian and also vacant at the moment. Only realtors or someone with a realtor background may answer. Thank you.
What is the general feeling about 'infilling' building in people's back gardens. We are on our 4th objection For nearly 2 years the local residents have been objecting to indiscriminate rear garden selling and saturation building in Bear Cross, Bournemouth area. With the help of local Councilors we have already won 3 times against the same developer. But we are now fighting his fourth application. The developer is unfortunately well known in the area. The area he is building on decimates two rear gardens in a peculiar shape. The 5' boundary fence is only 27 inches away from it's nearest property. i.e. a large bedroom window and a rear door, The building application says a bungalow and integral garage, but the plans show a two storey building. 3 Bedrooms and two bath rooms upstairs and Diner,Kitchen, Lounge and Study downstairs. That is a house? The residents are determined to fight on, but fear we may lose because our Central Government (Labour) is forcing local authorities to indiscrimately build. The Oxford Dictionary says that a bungalow is a one storey building?

Please Help! Open or enclosed porch? Hi, My BF is helping me remodel my house. We had originally planned to replace the windows in my enclosed porch. The wood was rotten, so we ended up ripping the porch off. As we are rebuilding the porch, I realize how much I enjoy the open feeling. I also think that the open porch is more appealing to the eye. My porch is 7x28, so it is a very nice size. I know that when it was closed in before, we never used it except for to store things. Dilemma is; BF wants to enclose the porch!! He thinks it will help the resale value, I think that a visually appealing porch would bring in more buyers. Any thoughts? My house was built in the 1920's...it is a 2 story bungalow. Thanks! Daisy Thanks for the answers so far!! I should have added that the porch is on the front of the house. I think that it would have more curb appeal if it was open and decorated with stylish furniture/flowers. My neighbors have enclosed porches which they never use...I would like to be the one house that stands out, but my BF thinks that there is more value in an enclosed porch.

Why is America so 'patchy' in it's development? For example, they've got the CGI and their Silicon Valley etc., but their mobile phones seem to be a bit behind what we have here - and why do they use pagers so much - is it because they get charged for incoming calls - which we don't here in the UK? When I went to San Diego not so long ago, could I find a decent kettle or some proper sausage or bacon - could I F...K? They only seem to eat frankfurter type sausages and their bacon looks like it's been chewed by the cat! And I know it's not like it all over America, but they have these wonderfully wide roads but shack-like architecture - you take LA for instance - every house seems to be like a squat, square shaped bungalow with a wire fence round it - miles and miles of them - all the same bland rubbish and the shops seem to follow the same bland shack-like plan why - is this an earthquake think or aren't they interested in building anything like skyscrapers and those ridiculously tall tenamant buildings they have in NY?
What should I do? I run a guest house which should have been a joint venture between me and hubby but it didnt work out financially so he went back to work full time, Now he wants to move to a run down but reasonably priced bungalow one of my pet hates and spend money doing that up and enjoy life with the money saved from this house in the bank but we have my Mother to consider who wont live in with us so we have to split the bungalow or turn the garage into a home for her which is fine but I want to carry on with this not full time as it doesnt warrrant it so I shall get a part time job too it is causing real friction between me and hubby and were hardly speaking when we do we shout he basically wants to semi retire I am niot ready to just yet shall I overcome my detest for bungalows and go along or shall I stick to my plan and stay here and make the most thing is it is already on market already has a buyer and the moving in date is end of July and I have guests in till that week HELP!!!!
What type of support do I need to lay slate tile on wooden front porch? I have a craftsman style bungalow with a wooden front porch. As with any old house, there are no quick fixes. Upon removing the rotten wooden floor boards, it was discovered that the support beams were also rotten. Now I can start with a clean "slate". I came up with the idea to put slate tile as a "walkway" from the steps to the front door with the remainder of porch having the tongue and groove fir boards as the original porch had. I need some advice on the support needed for the tile. We are planning on 12" on center beams, 3/4" plywood on top of that, covered with 1/2" Duroc. Is this sufficient? The area to be tiled is 7' x 8'. I would like to continue the slate tile on the steps and possibly the sidewalk leading up to the steps. I live in Iowa, thus cold winters and hot humid summers. Will this work? Please help.
Is there any reason why I should necessarily frame the basement walls for my son's new bedroom? We live in a very well built brick bungalow, circa 1945, in central North Carolina, a very temperate climate. The house has a full basement, with concrete block walls and poured concrete floor. There are no cracks anywhere and the basement is water-tight. Because our lot slopes toward the back yard, the rear portion of the basement (where we plan to put my teen son's new bedroom) is about half above grade, with windows that let in good light. I'm very tempted to just put a high quality paint on the walls and the floor joists above, put in flooring, and call it a day, because the space maintains a constant temperature of 70 degrees year round, even with no AC or heat source. Is there any reason why I should do more than this? Resale is not a consideration. BTW, my son couldn't care less about how his room's finished. He's a senior in high school and in a house full of females. He just wants his own space to get away ASAP.
What color should I paint my dining room and living room? ? I recently purchased a home (bungalow style) and I am wanting to decorate my kitchen, dining room and living room. I have an open floor plan from the living room-foyer (walk in area) and dining room, although there is division between the living room and dining room. my kitchen is next to my dining room and is totally divided. I have hardwood floors chestnut color from the entrance of the house to the dining room and a neutral color carpet for my living room. I love hgtv but could not find anything. I have a light wood color dining room table made from solid wood and in my living room i have a L sectional sofas, plasma and a fireplace with original unpainted brick work. I love natural colors but very afraid to use them. Now I have a second question or need opinions. My kitchen has oak color cabinets with laminate countertops a little of brown and black specs my floor has ceramic tile natural brown with white specs, i love apples and the theme of apples so i decided to paint my kitchen 3 walls of 4 an avocado green and the other wall a darker green rosemary sprig so basically 3 walls are a lighter shade of green and the one wall is a darker green. Did i do the right thing or was it a wrong combination of greens and a bad choice because of my light brown with white spec floor and brown spec counter top. please helppppp !!! desperate =)
Can someone tell me if I am depressed? It's been kind of hard for me in the past few years. Let me try and explain it. I hope someone will take the time to read this and help me. If you don't I understand, so don't worry. It probably started sometime when I was in 4th grade. My parents and sister had been fighting a lot. It was becoming a daily thing. When we went to Egypt, for a Christmas vacation, my sister sneaked out of the hotel room with the tour guide to go smoke hookah. I should have told my parents, but I didn't want my sister to get mad at me. So instead, I stayed up until the morning to open the door for her. Not long after wards, she went on her field trip to Long Hai. In Long Hai, she sneaked into one of the boy's bungalows. Inside, it was rumored that she lost her virginity. I never learned the truth. Soon after, she began going to see a phsychiatrist. Not wanting to leave me home alone, my parents took me along. Pretending I was watching T.V upstairs, I always listened to her. I began to get very jealous, I couldn't help it. She had all the attention, I was left in the corner. One time, after a particularly violent fight with my parents, she sat outside on the front steps. I went out to see if she was okay. She told me she was fine, we sat in silence for a little while. She told me she was going away for a little bit and would be back before I knew it. She did, she went from friend to friend for two days before she returned home. When she did, I was overjoyed. Of course I was. This girl was the entire reason I wanted to live. Sure she was completely mean to me, but of course I didn't stop loving her. She was my sister, and she always will be. I heard them make plans for her to fly to America and live with my grandmother in Oregon, where we were both born. I got insanely jealous at this point. I didn't say good bye, I couldn't if I wanted to. She was gone when I woke up. So after that it was slightly uneventful. The odd fight between my parents. During 6th grade, my parents started fighting alot. They even developed a sort of plan. They would yell for about half an hour. When they fought at night, my dad would go into my room and lay on the bed with me, my mom would come in and turn on the lights and start yelling again. Then my dad would sleep on the sofa. In the daytime, either one of them would go away for a bit. Either of them or me. I only left once, to my friend's house, down the street. Also, I am an expat child. I have been in Vietnam for about 6 years now, and I keep no best friends. Because, my best friends always, always move away. It's pointless to keep trying to make new friends. I'm 11 now, and turning 12 in a few days. So, thank you for taking the time to read this. I appreciate it so much. I know I may be blowing this out of proportion but please respond. I need to know. Thank you. If you need anymore details, just ask. I'm sorry to make this question even longer but, I'm known for my ability to keep my feelings to myself. I don't want to go blabbering about myself and losing the few friends I have. The fights my parents have are mostly because my mom is constantly accusing my father of having an affair. My parents are and have never been there for me. In my early childhood they were relevantly there. At soccer practices and things. But they had to stop because both of them have had several surgeries. By dad had one on his spine, because it had been bent. My mom had three because of her arthritis. My mom has a tendency to become angry at me for small things, as does my dad. I hate to be so rude but, I think they are both hypocrites to act this way. Once my dad was yelling at me for slamming the door, on his way out he slammed the door in my face. Thank you again for your answers. By the way, I took the screening test the first answer recommended to me. The result was 'severe depression' Thanks! You don't understand, I can't tell my parents. They would never understand how I feel. I can't do it. I don't have close relatives I live in Vietnam, all of them are in Portland, Oregon. I don't know what to do, I would ask my sister but she doesn't care about me anymore. The only use I am is to give her money and do her chores for her.
Getting rid of squirrels from an attic (u.k.) roof problem.? My husbands Gran has had her attic in her bungalow invaded by squirrels. They are getting in through her roof and chewing the insulation etc. We plan to block their entrance but are unsure if we can as the roof is this kind with the waved edge http://tinypic.com/4duh5eac And where the tiles meet the guttering there is a grill where the tile curves and that is where they are getting in. This grill is on every edge tile all the way round the house and we are not sure what is the best and most cost effective way to block it. Also can we block it or is it for ventilation? We have been told that moth balls are probably the best thing to discourage the squirrels is this true or is there something else you can reccommend?
