Is there a simple free program available to convert 2D autocad drawings to 3D models? I have a few simple DXF drawings I need to convert to 3D models. Unfortunately I know begger all about CAD! I heard it may be possible to get a program that can just convert them into 3D if you tell it to what depth to extrude (or whatever). Can anyone help please?

How to export a SketchUp (PRO) model to AutoCAD in 3D? I built a 3D model in SketchUp and need to send it in AutoCAD. I don't use AutoCAD nor have I installed it but I exported the file as a 3D model from SketchUp PRO and sent it as a .DWG file to a friend who uses AutoCAD to try it out. The problem was that AutoCAD couldn't read the vertical components. It's as if I had printed a flat 2D blueprint. Could anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Is there a way to connect architecture 3d models to ps2? If I already have a 3d model in autocad or microstation and I want to create a simple walkthrough that is fully rendered, how difficult would it be to write a CD-ROM that would allow me to view it using playstation 2? Do I have to be an expert in C++ or something? What would be even cooler is if I could create my own 3d scenes that could be plugged into first person shooters. Am I crazy?

Autocad drawing to 3d max conversion-model becomes red? I'm trying to convert dwg file to 3ds. I made a tire in autocad and attached materials to it. When I open it in 3d max, the steel frame part of the material appears red tinted! The color was silver in my autocad model. what's going on? I'm not familiar with 3d max....

How do I disable reflections on AutoCAD 2011? I've been using the 3D modelling on AutoCAD for a while, but have just began using the render feature. How do I turn off reflections? there are some really annoying reflections that would never exist in reality (eg a dull metal reflecting perfectly like a mirror). I've tried material editor and i always see reflection flash up and disappear from the list once I select a material.

What is the purpose of constraints in an AutoCAD 2D sketch/ 3D model? I am trying to teach myself how to model 3D objects in AutoDesk Inventor 2010. I am working through the provided tutorials, and I understand how you go about constraining a 2D sketch. I don't quite understand, however, WHY constraints are necessary? I notice that when I constrain a sketch, there is a notice at the bottom that says for example, "3 Dimensions needed." However, I am still able to perform model functions on the object without fully constraining it. Why is constraining necessary then, if you don't have to fully constrain a sketch before performing modeling functions? Thanks for your help!

2D drawings from 3D CAD models? I have a piece of equipment constructed out of many parts drafted in autocad 08. Is there any way that I could make 2D plans for each part based on their 3D models? The foundry can't work off of 3D models, they need 2D blueprints. Thanks for your answer louis, but viewports only give you different perspectives of the 3D model. Its a 3d laser cutting machine. What is it called? I am not sure of how it works, but i know that it works with AutoCAD or Inventor or some other 3d software. Somehow it laser cuts a model out of some kind of material. I was wanting to know what this machine is called or the a link to a website? For example, I have 3d modeled a boat in Autocad and I want to see it in real life, to scale. I send the file to this laser cutter and in a few hours it has produced a scaled model of the boat. one that if I wanted to I could hold, paint or whatever. Autocad HELP! What's the best way to thicken 3d objects? In autocad2007, I made a 3d model of a product made out of sheet metal with thickness 1/32 of inch (.03125"). Unfortunately, a problem arose and my boss's solution was to replace the original sheet metal with a thicker sheet metal!! (.040") Now doing the drafting changes will take FOREVER because the product is quite complicated and assembled of many different parts. What would be the best method/process/action that I could use to "thicken" the 3d objects?? The 3d objects were originally made generally like this... lines -> pedit -> join -> extrude .... i've been thinking about using the "thicken" feature.. but it doesn't work with already 3d objects... i've tried to "extract surfaces" from the 3d objects, but Autocad keeps telling me that I cannot do that... o.O HOW SHOULD I DO THIS?! PLEASE HELP!!! ok please don't link me to other sites... so i've decided to use the "extrude face" feature, and as long as i am meticulous and careful about extruding the correct faces of each object, i can safely make everything thicker without ruining the assembly. However, i have ran into another problem. the "extrude face" command does not apply to non-planar surfaces... for example, filleted corners!!... how can i thicken the corners that are filleted? AHA!. ok.. to work with the fillet edges, you can offset the filleted face. viola problem solved!
AutoCAD Civil 3D 2011, Run's slow. How can I fix this? I'm an Civil Engineering Student, and I use this program a lot at school for 3D modeling, road design, alignments and profiles ( all that good stuff ). I recently purchased a new laptop. Its a Lenovo Thinkpad W510 and its got pretty beefy credentials (intel i7, 8gb DDR3 RaM, 1Gb NIVIDIA Graphics card, 500GB 7200 rpm HDD) This surpasses all the system requirements for Civil 3D to run on a 64 bit operating system, BUT I've run it with a larger file (8,152KB) and even with not large files and it freezes every time I save and just run's slow, and will freeze with using bigger commands. Is there anything that may need to be tweeked with my system to fix this problem??? the school computers run it better, and their systems aren't close to what mine has. Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks
3d model sketchup cross section best way about this? Autocad? I want to make a cake in a shape of a car, so i thought i would get the model off the google sketchup warehouse cut it into slices maybe 5% of the models length thick,print them, laminate them and cut them out. Then using these templates I would be able to carve the car pretty accurately from a cake sponge. So here is the question, what would be the best way to get those template cut outs?! I have sketchup and AutoCAD but im not familiar with autocad that much.

Video training for AutoCAD 3D? I am learning the principles of basic AutoCAD functions at the Lynda website. Good site and all, but on many of their training programs they lack a step beyond the essentials. I would like training on modeling/rendering at a beginner-intermediate level from start to finish. I've found websites with free vids, but they jump right into the process without considering those who haven't fully grasped the concept of AutoCAD. I learn only through a step-by-step methodology. I don't want the bits and chunks, I want the whole gamut of what it takes to take an initial 2D draft to 3D rendering. I don't believe you can get the gist of it through books. Videos are the best way. Any suggestions?

How is Autocad used in the real world? 2D vs. 3D? I am learning Autocad 2008, and would like to use it to design furniture. I have been doing some of the tutorials... what I don't understand yet is if I should try to create my models in 3D and then get the various 2D layouts from that (plan view, elevation view, etc) or if I should draw each layout separately in 2D. The latter seems like a lot more work. Do you need to draw each view independently? Or are they somehow linked (when working in 2D)? autocad printing problem help? Hello i was wondering if anyone can help me with this problem. Whenever i try to print 3d models on my autocad it shows up on the print preview and prints off with the model but a black wiretrame outline of the model above it aswell. WHY CAN NOT PRINT A FILE IN AUTOCAD? Hi, my problem is I xref one 3d model (dwg file) and set up paper size. I could not print when I tried to plot, but it can be print in orignal drawing. I tried to create new file and xref the same dwg file, it still did not work! Who knows the reason?

I changed my hard drive from 80 160 MB, but I'm now having problems installing programmes that I did install on the computer before, programmes like autocad, 3D model, All these programmes were bought in Ukraine and I've been using them until I changed the hard drive. Secondly where can I get a programme that could translate languages?

Recommendations for a small engineering office server upgrade? Looking to replace our existing server. What is a recommended system and specifications to fit the following office setup? Engineering firm of about 10-15 people. 10 computer systems will be running intensive programs, e.g. AutoCAD (3D modeling). Two other computers that will handle admin tasks. One large multifunction laser printer, one medium-sized laserjet printer, and one full-size plotter. Firm size will fluctuate between 10-20 people (depending on the economy). Also, current server has SBS 2003, should we go ahead and transition to SBS 2008? So, in summary, what server system (hardware) and operating system (software) would be recommended?
What processor, RAM, video card to buy for new computer? If I buy a new PC with quad processors, what RAM should I get? I.e., how much GB and MHz of RAM? Should I get a video card? The PC will be a desktop unit running Windows XP. I run AutoCAD (some light 3D modeling), Excel, Word, Firefox and occasional light photo work. What is my CAD Model Wall Thickness? I have built a 3D model using Inventor. I am looking to analyze the part for thin regions. Is there a way to do that? Currently I just take sections and check random areas. This is inefficient and I still miss areas. I have access to AutoCAD 2008, Inventor 2008, and Algor's FEMPRO v21.1.

3D Studio Max for Architectural renderings? Hi all, hope you can guide me in the right direction. I work on Autocad doing Architectural work - house plans. I also have 3d Studio max and would like to make a 3d model of my plans , then render them (hopefully very photo-realistically), add people, sky tree etc. for the use of design and presentation BUT I dont know where to start. Is there somewhere online or somewhere where there are step by step tutorials to help me make my flat 2D plans a 3D rendered masterpiece. Come on all you 3d buffs !!! for people who have hairy pets and laptops.....? does your laptop (after certain period of time, a year or so..) clog up with your pets hairy making your computer shut down on itself whenever you make it work too hard, like for example, when i work on heavy software in 3d modelling and autocad, my laptop seems to shut down making me loose all of my work. this happened exactly a year ago, i took it to have it checked and they founds piles of my rabbit's hair everywhere. i got cleaned and it began to work fine. a year has passed and just recently its starting to do the same again....so my question is... do you get the same problem? does it also happen to you every year? what can be done to prevent this? my rabbit never gets even close to it, so i cant even imagine who the fur gets in, how does it go in your case?
AutoCAD 3d problem in 2008? hello, i want a help on 3 dimensions drawing in AutoCAD 2008. sir, when i m making 3d models of buildings in AutoCAD. the 3d view is not looking clearly and it is looking like dashed, dirty view in realistic visual style and conceptual visual style. previously i was using AutoCAD 2004 in that there is no such problem in 3d and it is a very best software for 2d and 3d. but I have to use this new version because my company upgraded the version to 2008. please help me yahoo. in architecture office: 3d a-cad modeling is used as basis for design and only then, on to 2d drawings? I graduated 10 years ago and haven't worked in an office since then. I am picking up my career again and want to arrive not so green to an office as an entry-level employee. In ten years much has happened in autocad [and the way it is used in an office...], and I wonder where to focus my knowledge of the [autocad tool] so that I have an idea already of how the process works from 3d to 2d etc. So, is the model understood more as a -sales/rendering and measure ratification tool, or is it now more used as, [the basic draft] from which detailed plans are later drawn. I have taken courses on autocad -lately, they have been very useful, but they focus on the commands etc, and not on how are they used in such a situation--- self help books are not really helpful either. thanks for the answers
autocad 2009 specs for computers, whats the signifiance of a processor requirment? I have a laptop that runs well. 1.83 intel core duo 256mb nvida gforce go graphics card. I wanted to know if the 3d modeling requirment of a 2.0 ghz processor would be significant since I am unable to upgrade my processor. I have checked the specs listing and I have more then the required in every field except the processor any help would be awesome since I dont want to buy a new computer because of this the program should work as i exceed the basic requirements, its just the 3d modeling that my specs are not good enough for
Autocad Views / Printing? Ive drawn 2 3d models in my model view. I did this by drawing 2d polylines and extruding them. I am trying to take each 3d object and place them in paperspace? (On my title block so I can print them.) I cant seem to get my drawing in the correct view or scale I want for printing. I right click on my model tab and select new layout, but I cant move one object within a layout without it affecting another. How do I take each object and put them in individual layouts so I can apply the title block and scale them without them affecting one another?
AutoCAD: internal error: !saveres.cpp@437:eGeneralModelingFailure? Please HELP!! I've done a 3d model (no xrefs or blocks) and this is the message I get whenever I try to open it. I've tried a DXF converter (doesn't do it) and of course, the bak file. Same message for the bak file. Nothing!! importing autocad architecture 2009 into sketchup? I imported a 3d model into sketchup from aca 2009 and the only way it will let me do it is if I explode all aec objects. After bringing the model in it shows it as a whole entity. Is there a way of exploding the object in sketchup? Will it let me modify and add material to my imported model?
