best paying job for a Interior Design Grad?

I recently graduated with a BS in Interior design. What is the best route to go to really earn some big bucks?

  1. Unfortunately, starting out as a designer doesn't usually pay big bucks. You can make a decent living, but you have to prove yourself before you grow too much. If you had any internships or co-ops with your schooling, I would start there, if you enjoyed it and got along with those that you worked with/for. If you did not, then you'll have a harder time. I would check websites for several companies in the area where you want to live, and try to find a couple that you would be interested in working for. Be sure to include some smaller firms that not everyone will be applying to. In this case you might have to work a little harder, and be more flexible, but you will learn a lot, and have potential to be noticed quicker. I would suggest creating an 8.5x11 version of your portfolio (2 or 3 projects that you feel represent yourself well) that you can submit with each resume you submit to companies. Include a letter stating your objectives of finding a place to work where you can continue to learn and better your skills as a designer. If you don't have experience working in interior design specifically, then I would also mention that you would be willing to start small, in whatever position they would need you in. Try to make yours as unique as possible (i.e. good font, maybe use a font color besides black, maybe even creating a logo that you can print on your paper), so that they will be more likely to remember you. It's hard to find a job in design when you've had no experience because most firms (especially the large ones) don't like to hire new people who have no experience, but it is difficult to get experience without being hired. So you might need to be a little more open and flexible at first until you can "prove yourself" to them. And who knows what you could end up with if you don't limit yourself!
