Interior Design Major Needing Help ASAP!?
As you can see I am an interior design major. I have to complete a furniture history notebook. Does anyone have any ides of what the notebook should look like? Also, does anyone know where I can get some pictures that show furniture in the past and present?

- Try http://www.furniturestyles.net/ http://www.interiordezine.com/index.cfm/Furniture_History http://www.albanyinstitute.org/collections/furniture.htm Project Gutenberg has some great info - start here http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/12254 Interesting timeline here: http://www.maltwood.uvic.ca/hoft/timeline.html This might be helpful to gauge what is required for your notebook http://www.usoe.k12.ut.us/ate/facs/Documents/Conference/S06/PIT/InteriorDesignNotebookGradingSheet.pdf
- Two questions: does the book have to impress the instructor or is it just an accumulation of information? To impress-here are several ideas. Use an old wall paper sample book. Design a great front and back cover, faux finish etc. Group the furniture by time eras, uses of material or design. Hit the scrap booking section of a local store and pull some 12"x12" pages of wood patterns, stone, wicker, etc to use as background. Shadow all your information with a coordinating color. Add a slick book marking ribbon or maybe a easel for display purposes. A book can also be created by using uncut scrap mats from a frame shop (i.e. Joann ETC sells 16" X 20" scrap mats for $1.49.) Poke holes through boards and secure with leather lacing. Pages could be brown paper ripped to size. Number each paper with a decent hand lettered font. The binder can be wrapped in material. The book could open accordion style and be free-standing or hang from a hook. Make the effort and it will show. Think beyond the box or in this case, beyond the book. Locate a decent websites and print off photos. Can they then be color enhanced with colored pencil or markers? Try cutting out each item. Color the white cut edge with a Tombow marker-makes for a cleaner look. Good luck.
- I have to say the previous suggestion was awesome. I loved her book ideas. I am both a graphic designer and someone who WAS an interior designer and went through 4 years of college to become one. I was also blessed to have been raised in Michigan and went to the Henry Ford Museum where they (then) showcased their collection of antique furniture. I saw the rocking chair that Abraham Lincoln was shot in when I visited there. It gave me shivers to know that the blood stains on it were his. I also was a contract design furniture rep in the late 70s. OK so I'm old. But that was such a wonderful period of furniture innovation. And make sure to put your pictures in order of the dates. So here is what I would suggest as far as some historic furniture to search for pictures of: Rococo Sheraton Duncan Phyfe Shaker Mid Century Modern (check out the book "1000 Chairs" for a good reference on all styles. This will also give your book a unity because it will focus on only one element of design. Look on ebay for pictures once you have identified which ones you want to focus on. You can click on a picture and hold and save it to your hard drive.) Egyptian Art Deco Art Nouveau Louis XVI Louis XV Roman Greek Frank Lloyd Wright Charles Rennie MacIntosh Richard Schultz Charles and Ray Eames Phillip Starke Hans Wegner Eero Saarinen Thonet Dunbar Edward Wormley Lots more but it's time for dinner. Good luck. I know it will be outrageously beautiful and stun the whole class. Denise
