Are Great Danes good apartment/small house dogs?
I'm planning on getting a Harlequin great dane but the only problem is that I'll be living in a small area and I want to make sure that is the proper living environment for this big of a dog.

- Most Danes are content in a little space but they need regular walks to stay healthy. Also remember the bigger the dog the shorter the life span
- You just answered your own question. Small area=HUGE dog=STUPID!!!
- Amazingly enough yes! They do well in Condos and such as long as there is no other pet! They are by nature couch potatoes!! Be sure to give long walks!
- It's probably not the best living conditions for a very big dog but great danes are known for being big couch potatos. As long as you take him out on frequent walks and he gets enough excersice he should be fine. Good Luck
- Common sence would tell me that this dog needs to have alot of room to move around and if you are in a very small house or an apt it woul dnot be the dog for you. These dogs get very large and need space. You would be better off getting a smaller dog or waiting until you can get a bigger place
- great danes need a lot of area to run and play. being in a small space is bad for them. i suppose that if you take him for long walks and take care of him you could make it work. but they are BIG dogs.
- Actually, they ARE good dogs for small areas. Danes are so huge, that if they over-exert themselves they are likely to have a heart attack. They do need to be taken out for daily walks, but they are extremely docile. Almost better than the lhasa apso that runs sofa circles all day long, huh?
- Big dogs and little apartment don't mix. try and seek a smaller breed of dog. Its really mot fair to the dog
- as long as you exercise your dane it will be fine. Danes are very flexable and are knowen to be quite the couch potato.
- I would not suggest anything small for a great dane. They need alot of space to run around in and a apartment would not cut if.
- Absolutely! Don't let their size fool you. They don't require much room if you take them for a nice walk. They are calm, low energy dogs. http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/2-24-2006-89717.asp
- I certainly think an adult Dane would make a good small house or apartment dog. really once they reach maturity, most are not overenergetic -- you would need to plan for walks and clean up after them, but they should be content. Good Luck!
- Great Danes are not recommended for apartments. Small houses are acceptable if you have a large yard. These dogs in particular need space to roam because they get to be 130+ lbs. They need an average amount of exercise, but due to their size they need a lot of space. As large dogs age, they are prone to arthritis, especially if they do not get enough exercise. This may potentially become an expensive problem in the future. You will also find your Great Dane getting bored and possibly destructive around the house. Good luck with your decision.
- Do you honestly think that a huge dog would do good in a small apartment. While in his puppy stage I'm sure he could do some hefty damage to your house when he is just playing. I would not get a Great Dane until you have an adequate size home.
- No because they r the size of good sized colts!!!!
- My understanding is that great danes don't need a ton of exercise, so they should be fine. One consideration is the tail - my aunt's GD knocks stuff off everything!
- Yes they just need 45 min- 1 hr walks.
- Oddly enough Danes can do fairly well in a small place. As long as he doesn't have to depend on the small area to get his daily exercise.. He's likely to be fine.. You have to make sure he gets plenty of walks and running time in, but when you are at home, he should be fine.
- A lot will depend on if you have the time to be sure that you can get he dog the exercise it needs outside of the house.
- Danes do very well in small condo's and apartments. My sister had one with her in her small house and she was just fine. You will need to get them plenty of exercises and walks but once she was home she took over the couch! She was a very sweet girl.
- maybe not be cause great Dane can get pretty big.
