My parakeet and his cage?

I leave my parakeet free most of the time. I put his food on top of the cage. The door is always open (I'm home all day) Where I go, he goes. I have several perches set up all around the room for him to fly back and forth, and there are toys hanging from them. For the last few days he'll stay out for a couple of hours, then fly back inside his cage. Why is this? Doesn't he enjoy his freedom? My house is bird proof, and he has never hurt himself. I've only had him for two months. He's finger trained. Mostly he stays in the room with me. If I plan to spend a long time downstairs, I'll bring his cage downstairs with me. He doesn't like to be alone. Why would he go back to his cage instead of playing free? Also, he has never come out of the cage on his own, but he goes in on his own. He never resists when I go to bring him out either. I would never force my precious Heaven to do anything. I love him very much. He's still learning to completely trust me. Yesterday he finally flew in and out of his cage for the first time. He comes and goes as he pleases now. Will not eat veggies or fruit. I offer it to him daily in his food cup for a month now.

  1. dont panic! in the wild, birds never keep to a schedule for long...predators can and will monitor what they do and when they do it. its perfectly natural for a parakeet to want to change his routine once in a while!
  2. If he's still learning to trust you I'm assuming you have not had him to long. He's most likely going back to his cage for security. He feels safe and comfortable there. Give him so more time and he'll come around.
