1. By having, both, interior design and business experience. Having the skills to do good design layouts is NOT enough. Unless one has experience RUNNING a business, one shouldn't attempt to open a business. Otherwise, one is, pretty much doomed to failure. For example, what do you know about accounting, taxes, labor laws, contracts, finances business loans, collecting and dunning, local zoning laws, purchasing materials, labor contracting, architecture, marketing? And much, much more. Without THESE skills, a business cannot be run successfully. I, for one, am one of the BEST graphic designers I know, but, I am currenty on my third attempt to run my own studio. Each time I fail, I have learned something new. But the most valuable lesson, so far, is that I was Ill prepared to go full time freelance on that first attempt.
