- First of all cantilevers were not invented in the 20th century. The technique was use by Christopher Wren in the construction of spiral staircases in St. Paul's Cathedral, C1800. Neither were cast iron structures a product of the 20th Century. The famous Iron Bridge over the River Severn was opened in the latter part of the 18th century. The above two revolutionized architecture long before the 20th century. As regards to the others I would have to go with reinforced concrete. In addition to allowing the creation of a massive road systems (not really architectural) , in combination with steel joists and trusses (which should be on the list) it allowed the production of skyscrapers which are the hall mark of all of today's modern cities.
