Do you know of any grants or other funding for building a small house? I plan to build a 20 by 20 sq. ft. home. I have read and heard monetary incentives in building with eco friendly alternatives and such.I am also looking for a blueprint within the dimensions listed above.I am certainly have the training to build a home but I need some ideas for its interior and structural design.

  1. It will be really hard to live in such a small home, if you do any kind of hobby at all. We have a 900 sq ft home, and are very cluttered. The computer needs space, the piano, sewing stuff, cooking & home canning stuff, etc. If you have many possessions at all, you will not like such a small home. Make sure you put in a full, partly finished basement, and it will not be so bad (ours is an old stone dracula basement). You should read thru the tax code. If you live in the US, expect to see more tax incentives for environmental choices since that is one of Obama's priorities. You could build a bigger underground home and still be eco-friendly. And you can try & use used building materials as much as possible. What we do to keep our carbon footprint down is use wood heat (the wood would rot in our woods anyhow, still releasing carbon), have a smaller home, grow our own food & eat venison instead of beef, and don't drive very much.
  2. There are many grants available for the home owner looking to either upgrade or even take one such projects like coverting to solar power etc. I know that there are many buildings grants you can look at in regards to the idea you have of building a small home. It's hard to say exactly which grants fit what and it all depends on your situation, project and what you are qualified to recieve. Myself I can only speak for solar projects as those are the ones that I am familiar with but The best option is to get a package that helps you locate which grants fit your needs and which ones are available for you to apply for. You can find a grant package at
