How High Can a Building Be Where I Live?

What is the maximum height a building can be built in the area where I live? I plan to build (well design for a project for one of my classes) a high-rise commercial building, ideally 30 stories high. If you don't know the specifics, where can I find this information? I live in Suffolk County, NY.

  1. talk to your town clerk. .
  2. If your talking engineering the current limit is around 3000 feet. If your talking city planing it's probably 6 stories.
  3. the county planning commission sets regulations and can tell you. however in most jurisdictions, it is the fire department that determines the maximum height they can respond to which is likely to be a lot less than 30 stories.
  4. This link takes you to the international building code for NY state (at least it should) http://publicecodes.citation.com/st/ny/st/b200v07/index.htm?bu=NY-P-2007-000013 If not go to ecodes.biz, click free codes on the left menu, choose NY, click freeview, click returning user under the search bar (no login needed) and just start exploring. As with any code you get stuck in a loop trying to find things, but this is your best bet for finding the info on your own. Of course you probably can call the town clerk or find an architect or someone in construction if they don't mind being bothered
