  1. This is a hard field. You have 2 general catagories: 1. hospitality (hotels, restaurants, comericial buildings) and 2. residential (homes) You can be employed 2 ways: 1. by a design/architecture firm 2. self employed. How you get paid is highly variable depending on who you work for, how good you are, who are the clients, how many you get, the economy....etc. If you are self employed, you are correct--no design, no pay. Since you are looking at 3-4 years of schooling. things will be different when you graduate. This is one field that things change minute by minute.
  2. I have 2 nieces that graduated from different Universities with degrees in Interior Design. It's a great career and they both love it. One works for an architect - started off full time designing and now since she has a baby, she is working part-time. She also does some design work on her own at home for different companies. My second niece works in commercial design - designing commercial work spaces. She is loving the job. Because they both with for professional companies, they get paid a salary and actually are very, very busy. They get full benefits, vacation time, etc. The first niece has her National certification, my second niece has taken the exam twice now - close to getting it but not quite! It isn't an easy major - very difficult actually and lots of time involved, but they love their careers!
