underpinning foundation?

I have a 1958 ranch style home with full basement and attached to it at one time was an open breezeway that is pushed in about 5ft that has crawl space foundation with a 4 inch slab on top of it which is now closed in. I currently have plans to extend that breezeway area flush to house to make a new entrance way to the basement and into garage.So heres my question, I excavated the area in front of the breezeway so about 3 1\2 ft down theres about a 6 -8 in footing now my plans show to under pin this, can I leave this area andpour new footing at the new level then go up with new block up against the old area being that this area is only going to be used as a staircase.and about 3ft of this wall has a return that is full height of basement then goes to 3 1/2 ft or so.so theres about 8ft. that needs to be underpinned.I tried to explain most of my troubles .. thanks phil
