- If you mean a casual 'platform' type (not intended for long term occupancy), then it's pretty much a seat-of-the-pants project: what materials do you have = what you can build. Before you start one, like any construction project, check to make sure the 'foundation' is solid, by sizing up the tree itself. Is this a naturally 'strong' variety? Oak and sugar maple are fairly good candidates; silver maple, basswood, box elder, and others are terrible because they have naturally weak wood, branching, or 'crotches'. Check out a tree ID book from the library and verify the variety of tree in question, then cross check that with a woodworking manual about the relative strength of that wood. Have fun, but keep it safe. Also note that some wood types 'hold' nails better than others. For instance, softwoods hold better than beech, or birch and so on; again, check in the woodworkers manual to verify this. So, method of attachment can be very important, unless you want to fall out of the tree...safety first!
