Is it a bad choice to major in Interior Design?

I'm currently a sophomore at the University of Kansas and am on the track to major in Biology and then possibly apply to Med or Optometry school. Recently, I've been debating on whether or not this is the right path for me and have been trying to figure out what my passion is. Well, today I discovered it. I have always loved design and it's always been a hobby of mine. Today I finally realized (after completing the redecoration of my bedroom) that interior design is my absolute PASSION. I love seeing a room come together and it gives me such joy to see it all completed! My question is...would it be unwise to step off my Pre-medical path and switch majors to interior design? I know it would be tough...because trying to find a job as an interior designer in this economy would NOT go over well and I would most likely end up on my butt in the rain, unemployed. Any advice? Thanks to everyone for your input!

  1. It would be unwise to just switch. Instead, take an interior design class or two while continuing your current pre-med studies. Then re-evaluate. You know you'll always have work as a doctor, but no guarantees as a designer. OTOH, it'd be a waste of money and effort to push yourself through med school when your heart isn't in it. Pre-med students are allowed to major in anything, as long as they take the pre-requisites. So you could major in interior design and hold off deciding until graduation. Till then, try for jobs in both fields. One caveat on interior design: it's tons of fun to decorate, but you wouldn't be doing it for yourself on the job. There's lots of compromise and customer management to ensure your customers are happy with your ideas. You have to be okay with that.
