Can a house that is about to fall into the sea be a work of art as the ultimate property crash?
What would you like to write in a letter to pin to the wall of this house? Thu, Dec 31 07:21 PMA British artist has bought a clifftop house in northern England in order to document its expected collapse into the sea as a work of art. Kane Cunningham, a landscape painter, bought the house at Knipe Point near Scarborough, North Yorkshire, for 3,000 pounds ($4,770) and plans to install cameras in its rooms to film the ultimate property crash, British media reported. Cunnningham, 48, head of the fine art degree course at Yorkshire Coast College, said the house symbolised "lost dreams, financial disaster and threatening sea levels". "People might ask 'can a house that is about to fall into the sea be a work of art?' I say it can," the Times newspaper quoted him as saying. The artist is using the bungalow as a studio and has completed two paintings of the property and the view over Cayton Bay below as part of the work entitled: "Last Post". Cunningham is hoping that local artists, poets and musicians will brave the unsteady ground and come up with with ideas about how the project could develop.Members of the public are also invited to send letters, which will be pinned to the wall as part of the work, then destroyed as it disappears. http://in.news.yahoo.com/137/20091231/778/tod-uk-artist-to-document-real-life-prop.html Edit: Duirmuid - now that would be a crash... - No I just see it as a cunning entrepreneur who wants to make money. We can only hope that the artist disappears over the cliff top along with his investment, now that would be something!
- One mans art,is another mans sheet of used toilet paper!
- i would say artful person for such artistic idea for converting art to money mart
- Rather like the lives of some. The house, once strong, sturdy, pleasant, and perhaps a place of happiness. Little by little, it crumbles, cracks, becomes weak, and falls prey to forces beyond its control. Yes, I can understand why someone would want to document that. I ought to know.
- I like that, I think its a great idea. It parallels exactly the way I see my country going.
- As a practising artist, I feel one should record one's feelings towards the experiences of our times.... be it on a personal or global level...it depends on the artist! Bravo to Cunningham!!!!
- I would pin 'work in progress' to the wall. It sounds a bit of a mad idea but something strangely good about it as well.
- All these so-called "works of art" and "experts" get RIGHT ON MY T*TS! How the fcuk can a house falling into the sea by ANY stretch of the imagination be a "work of art".Then again, piles of bricks, messy bedrooms with used sanitary towels and empty rooms have been deemed works of art. All these supercilious, bumptious, pretentious arty-farty @rseholes want to get a grip. (Did I mention they get on my t*ts?)
- Not sure how artistic it is, but it sure is a good money spinner. Should at least give him the funds to buy a new house once that one disappears into the sea.
- I actually like this as a concept. I mean, have you seen the crowds that gather to see Tower Blocks and the like being blown up? Letter, and apologies to Crosby, Stills Nash and Young! "Our house is a very, very fine house With two cats in the yard........ ........where's the yard gone?" http://www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/mygirl2/ourhouse.htm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhT3C_9mkVI&feature=related
- Hmmm, what is art? Seems anything can be art these days. If Tracey Emin can call her unmade bed a work of art, then where does art and start and where does art end? If Banksy can call his street graffiti art then I guess anything goes really doesn't it. Happy New Year Faith, all the best for 2010 to you.
- Hi Faith During my studies with the Open University I did a year on Philosophy. At the end of the academic year all I could say with complete conviction was, "I am". Everything else was a subjective opinion based on information to hand at any particular moment. Likewise, I think art and beauty are in the eye of the beholder based on information in that moment in time. A Happy and Peaceful New Year to you and yours.
- All I can say Faith, is "Oh dear". Real things are more important...our world needs some help.
- Yes, GBP3000 to Zero, for the house. He might own the property, so there may be residual value, and he may make money off his 'art.'
