Are there any websites that have house plans with a general estimated building cost?
I actually knew one a few months ago, but my computer ate my bookmark and now I cant find it. I dont need a to-the-penny estimate...I'm just trying to find out about how much house I can actually afford to build. Thank you. I meant a free one...and I know they exist, I'm just not sure where anymore. I'm not ready to commit to spending money yet, i'm not even sure if I'll be able to do this.

- Housing prices vary by location. It's less expensive to build in places where the labor is less expensive. CA is horrible and TX is not for example. Here in southern CA you can count on around $200 per square foot to build a home. I was in TX a few weeks ago and the cost to build there was around $170 per square foot. This gets you a decent but plain house. Call around to a couple of contactors to ask for a ball park cost to build per square foot. Some are expert sales people who will give you a run around and suck you in. Find one that will just tell you the average - and probably a bunch of disclaimers about how that doesn't include high end stuff. They need to tell you that so they feel safe about what they told you and that you won't hold them to it. Since they don't know what you really want yet, it's a bit hard for them to be totally right on. Good luck!

- Ask local contractors, real estate agents, and appraisers for the cost to build whatever it is that you have in mind. They can give you at least an average "cost per square foot" for construction in your area.
- Try Menard's: http://www.menards.com/featuredProjects.do?dispatch=homesMain It might not give a complete price, especially since it doesn't include labor, but it will give you a starting place.
