- It's impossible to answer this one on the Internet because none of us can see your house and give you specific ideas. (and you don't really want a bunch of strangers seeing your house anyway) However, here are a couple of suggestions that might help. Start out by gathering ideas where ever you can. Take notes on these ideas, or carry a camera around with you to help you remember. 1) Builders' model homes in your community - if the houses are decorated, you'll find a great deal of ideas about how things are put together to create a certain look and feel. (These are houses that are for sale, and will have salesmen present. Visiting the homes is free, but it's obviously the salesmen's job to sell the homes, so they will want to know if you're planning to move in the near future, etc. Just tell them that you have just started looking and want to see what's available right now. They won't care if you look around.) 2) Magazines. Don't pass up this valuable resource. If you can ask friends to save magazines for you, it's worth the time to go through them and pull out photos of rooms you like. However, be more picky than that. Don't pull out every photo you think is pretty. Instead, save the photos of rooms you would feel comfortable living in. Pretty soon, you'll have a great idea of which style you like and plenty of ideas of how to add things to your home to give it the look you want. If you don't have access to magazines, spend an afternoon at the local library. You can't pull photos out of their magazines, but can make copies if you want to remember a certain photo. Decorating is the same as any other area. Study, study, study! By paying attention to other houses, you soon start coming up with original ideas on your own. And it's fun to be creative and find things you love for your home. Have fun!
