Hoping to put a small extension and conservatory on our house. Where do we apply for planning permission?
Does it cost anything to seek planning permission? Can I draw the plans myself and how long would it take to go through? Any other advise on the matter would also be appreciated. Thank you!

- The first thing to do is look at the houses around yours, have they had extensions or conservatories if they have permission has been granted in your area. Then go to your local council offices and ask about planning permission. They will be able to give you all the relevant information
- Phone your local authority planning department and run it by them. With conservatories you do not need PP up to a certain size, and it may be the same with the extension. You will need to comply with Building Regulations. Again, call the LA Building Inspector and ask what he needs you to do. You can usually submit a plan or sketch of your own to the BI so long as it shows dimensions and required details such as foundations, lintels, doorways etc.

- Hi there, there is a certain amount of development you can do without planning permission the level of development depends on a number of factors including whether you are in a Conservation Area, National Park, terraced property, detached property. Best to sketch something out and get an answer as to permission is required initaly, my advise you be then to speak to a proffensional who could act on your behalf to submitt a planning application if needs be as some (not all) planners can be unhelpful and obstructive, a planning proffesional can argue your case on your behalf.
