What is the difference between an architect and an architectural engineer?

because when i graduate high shcool next year i want look into that field. I want to design cool futuristic houses and buildings. what college is best for things like that? pleeese help thx

1. i think the architect thinks it up and an AE makes blueprints
2. The AE does the calcs that the Arch is too lazy to perform.
3. An architect is the design professional who creates the artistic layout and envelope of the building. He must (or at least should) have a basic understanding of each of the applicable branches of engineering that go into making a building "work." He is responsible not only for the overall building design to ensure that it has a functional layout, but that it meets the fire and egress requirements of the governing local building codes. The architect typically hires consultants for structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, etc. to perform those portions of the design. I've been in the field for over a decade and have only heard the term "architectural engineer" a couple of times, so I can't be much help there..... however.... The structural engineer frames the building; essentially making the architectural vision a reality by designing the foundations, framing (beams, columns, etc.), and lateral systems for wind and seismic resistance, etc. which all fit inside the exterior skin envisioned by the architect. A couple of times in the past, I have run into an architect who has an advanced degree (masters) in structural engineering. This may be along the lines of what you are looking for.
