Screen window for dog house to keep cool?

We live in a warm climate and I'm looking for ways to keep our dog cool in the summer. She already has a pool in her kennel, but we are building her a new dog house. I am planning on raising it about 2 inches off the ground, putting two vents on the highest part to let warm air escape, but I am also thinking of putting in a screen for a window, that maybe we could cover in the window with shutters? We have a great wind that comes from the west in the summertime and I think that would help to keep her cool when she is in her dog house. Thoughts/have you tried something similar? I'm sorry, that we could cover in the WINTER with shutters. Thanks Mabe! We have her under a pretty dense Live Oak right now, we also put a large chunk of ice out in her bowl on especially hot days.

  1. a good shade tree will help..if you have one, maybe you could move the kennel closer to it, so that the dog gets enough shade as well as sunlight..half and half would be good..or build a covering over half of the top of the kennel
  2. I doubt she will be in her dog house if she is hot- she will probably just lay on any cool dirt in her kennel. As long as it is shady and she has plenty of water I think she will be okay. What type of dog is it? Remember that some dogs have double coats (undercoat and overcoat) and this undercoat insulates them to keep them cool. If your dog has a double coat you should never shave it to keep it cool. Dog's coats keep them insulated from the warm. My dog gets to stay in the house all summer (and winter) except for walks. Not a lot of shade in the yard and he is a black dog so he would get way too hot in the sun. He is well behaved in the house as all dogs can be with training.
