How can I build a lighted sign?

We need to buld a 4'x8' two-sided lighted outdoor sign at our church. Does anyone have any experience in designing and building something like that?

  1. Please get a quote from a reputable Sign Shop. Don't do this at home. There is a grave danger of you building one big electrocution hazard and if someone gets killed that's all you need! There are fare too many variables involved and I would suggest you only build your own sign if one of you is a licensed electrician.
  2. Do you want it to light from inside or be lit from outside? If from inside, I recommend building a 4' x8' x 1' frame with the 1' edges closed. I'd put any lettering on translucent white 4' x8' sheets and cover the lettered sheets with 4' x 8' clear sheets. You can add topical material with static cling vinyl to the outside and the labor-intensive lettering is protected from graffiti. Check product specifications for the sheets. Make sure they're suitable for outdoor all-weather use. You don't want anything that will splinter in cold weather or melt in 100+ summers. You can have the lighting itself professionally wired.
