Architectural Designs

is it just wrong for an atheist to design...?

churches? i am an interior designer and planning on becoming an architect and i am also an atheist... i have never worked on designing a church outside of school, but i always liked how i could affect people's emotion with my designs, i think it would be fun. my mom is a devote christain and wants me to design her church's new building after i become licensed. but i feel kinda weird about it b/c i'm atheist and all... what do you guys think, would i be selling out?

  1. Not at all.
  2. Nope, you're just doing your duty being an architect. Atheists can be nice too you know..xD
  3. If men can design women's clothes... I've photographed churches, weddings and Japanese motorcycles and I'm agnostic, single and a Triumph rider. No sweat, it's a job.
  4. Why not? They can be beautiful buildings. Would you not design a building unless you believed in the company? You won't have much work if you think like that.
  5. No. Would you have to get a medical degree to design a hospital?
  6. $$$ all spends the same.
  7. Not at all Cathedrals and Churches exhibit some great examples of classical building principles and beautiful architecture. I work with 3 atheists that work in structural design, one of them designed a new steeple three months ago.
  8. It's not wrong! Since when does being atheist mean hating other religions? It's purely business and artistic.
  9. You can always design a theatre even if you don't like farce can't you?
  10. A Church is just a building. You can design whatever you want, you shouldn't feel guilty about it. And it isn't selling out to make money off a religion you don't believe in :)
  11. Go ahead...you might even find yourself a "believer" afterwards!
  12. There is no atheist rule book. Do what you wish.
  13. go for it :) please, realize one basic thing in this matter. The ,,churches are anything ranging from a single - wide trailer, to St. Peter and Paul Basilica in Milan ...so, you got plenty of space to choose from
  14. Nothing wrong with that. I'm an Atheist, but I think religious buildings — particularly Muslim and very old Christian ones — are some of the most beautiful in existence. If I had any architectural skills I'd probably design a few myself.
  15. No. A parapleigic could design a bicycle, and that wouldn't be wrong. A man may design woman's clothing, not wrong. An atheist desigining a church? Why not? And besides, what's going to happen, is a God you don't believe in going to strike you with thunder if you design a church? I don't see it as selling out, but performing a project for the community. Reaching out is generally a very right thing.
  16. I don't think there's anything wrong with it... maybe there are some atheists who think we should avoid everything to do with religion but that strikes me as being almost as "superstitious" as the behaviour of some believers.
  17. It is not wrong at all for an atheist to design a church. If you have a gift and talent for designing things of beauty then you should utilize it in whatever way presents itself. I make jewelry and I am pagan but that doesn't mean that I won't make a Rosary for a Catholic friend.
