is it wrong for an athiest to design...?
churches? i am an interior designer and planning on becoming an architect and i am also an atheist... i have never worked on designing a church outside of school, but i always liked how i could affect people's emotion with my designs, i think it would be fun. my mom is a devote christain and wants me to design her church's new building after i become licensed. but i feel kinda weird about it b/c i'm atheist and all... what do you guys think, would i be selling out?

- I find nothing wrong with it as long as you keep your target clients in mind.
- Let me approach this as an atheist... <clears thoat> Won't be any worse than a preacher making money from religion! How did I do?
- No, doing your job is just doing your job. Designing a church isn't proclaiming a god belief.
- Well, it IS part of your job, and we do have a free enterprise system. If you make a beautiful church, "better" than another person's regardless of religion, by all means, do it! I do see what you mean about that though. Maybe you'll get back into spirituality through it. Good luck! :D
- No. They're still humans. They need a roof and you can help them.
- if you feel weird about it don't do it.....however a job is a job....especially when you are first starting out....But my personal opinion is business is business. Don't let personal things interfere with that...
- No. Why would it be?
- Im ok with that dont worry, just do it the best you can :)
- Why would you consider it selling out? You'll simply be designing a building. I say go for it. I wish you all the best in your endeavours.
- A building of beauty can change hands many times; what may be a church today will be something different in the future - yet the architecture will remain. It is not a sell out to create a thing of beauty, regardless of its use.
- I'm a Christian and I don't see anything wrong with it. It's just a building.
- Don't worry about it. Work for who hires you...but insert a few pentagrams and hidden evil geometries, and secret ley-line maps leading to the local porno video-stores, DA VINCI CODE-style!
- It's not wrong for every atheist, but it could be wrong for you. If you feel there is an ethical battle between rationality and religion, and that making a good church building will "provide aid and comfort to the enemy," then you should not do it. Or if you see it as an opportunity to harm the "enemy." But if you believe that everyone has the inherent right to follow their conscience, then by all means. Take their money, design them the best church you can. After all, it's only a building, right?
