If I had a large window air-conditioner could I cool my whole house?

I plan on getting central air but right now I about going to get a 15,000 btu air conditioner for my 350 sf downstairs. Upstairs is about about another 350 sf. and has a smaller 8000 btu unit in one bedroom. My question is this: Could I use my forced hot air unit (without the heat) to somehow circulate the air evenly throughout the house? I mean the 15000 is overkill downstairs. I know that central air is more practical, but I am just wondering if somehow hypothetically this is possible.

  1. you can use it to cool alot of your house but not all of it.
  2. Theoretically, I suppose if your hot air unit can take the air from the room where the window ac is and blow it into the rest of the house, you can cool the rest of the house a tiny bit, but it would be very inefficient. Even if the air is circulating throughout the house, though, the window ac would need enough time to cool whatever air is in the room at any given moment. If the air moves through the room and into the other rooms too quickly, the window ac does not have time to cool it. You're better off strategically placing small units in several rooms. Window ac's have come down in price and how ever many you get, you'll never spend anywhere near as much as getting central ac.
