Career change - from Graphic Design to Architecture?

Hi, I'm currently finishing up a BFA in Design. Originally it was to pursue a career in graphic design but then I have come to learn that following one's dreams is not always affordable. So I'm aiming for a more practical and respectful(?) profession in architecture. Can anyone please advice me as to how to make this transition? My portfolio mainly consists of web and graphic design work, I have little knowledge of anything that might even remotely be considered architectural (like spatial design?). I have six years of part-time work experience as a graphic and web designer. I realize that a MArch is probably necessary at this point, but how do I make it easier to be accepted into MArch programs? Any help is greatly appreciated.

  1. You are going to have to call the school you are interested in attending and ask the admissions counsellor. They will have to review your transcript and portfolio to give you a real answer about what you have and what you need. Basic information is probably available on the University's web site as well.
  2. Unless it's truly your passion, architecture has a poor outlook. For as much hard work and money you put in for a degree, you don't get paid much and it's a very tough field to enter. With the economy as it is, not too many investors developing land for several years. You'll end up supporting yourself by freelancing your graphic design work.
