What would be the best way to learn how to build a website, with a view to setting up a commercial site?

Ive only ever really used my computer for day to day things: games, word documents and the internet, so have never yet tried any sort of programming or website building/design. How hard is it to begin to learn these skills and which are the best sources to learn from? Any help much appreciated, thanks

  1. learn macromedia dreamweaver
  2. you need to first of all learn how to code html that what i have done. im only a noob coder nothing major just the basic html codes i have learnt myself thru online tutorials this link below should help
  3. if you have never designed or done any site building you can use Microsoft frontpage pretty easy for beginners, even a cave man can do this..haa or just when you by your domain name with godaddy they can sell you templetes for adding an easy site, it's more cost though, or you can find my site and email me I am a web designer.. www.XanderProductions.Us
  4. I have the same task. I started from HTML (god HTML Bible from Amazon - it is very good). Templates for home page but to set up technical side... i am going to professionals. I found it is really difficult especially with real time ordering. You have to set up Pay Pal if you want to sell something from your site but it is not very useful. I am doing Protx.co.uk for payments and still it is the most difficult part. Good Luck! You never know till you try to buid it
  5. Theres lots of resourses out there, you just have to look. Here are a few links to get you started, then do a search for tutorials for building sites. Best software are Dreamweaver, coffee cup, which you have to pay for, though if you look around there are free webbuilders and hosting sites, free templates, in fact free everything for site or page building.
  6. Wouldn't try doing it from scratch. Ive just set up my website with 1&1.co.uk who I bought my domain name from and they have a template which you just fill in the details, pictures etc that you want and then just click "publish" and you are online. You get 1 page for free and 7 pages is a couple of quid a month. Good luck.
  7. No way I'd set up and design a site from scratch, it takes way too long. Use a WYSIWYG editor like Dreamweaver. But even then, building a website can be tedious, especially if you do not know HTML. I am going into my third year at college going for my e-commerce degree in website design. I truely professional website can take up to a couple weeks from start to finish. If you really want to learn how to do it, I'd suggest a night class at a local community college. Take a HTML class first, then try a Dreamweaver class. Its well worth the money, time and investment to do it right. Or just grab some books at your bookstore on HTML, XHTML and Dreamweaver. I would avoid Frontpage, it is not nearly as powerful as Dreamweaver and it's Microsoft-specific. I just finished this website...it took two weeks from start to finish, and I'm still tweeking it! http://www.handkneaded.com Be warned though, web design is addictive!!!!
  8. A commercial site is normally designed by someone with years of experience. But if it is a small business you can get something up an running using FrontPage or Dreamweaver. The best sites and high search engine ranks are normally created through years of experience. You could start learning HTML and XHTML, CSS Mastery is good book I recommend to web developers.
