TRADESMEN - how can we save on costs when designing and building our home?

- all depends on the style the degree of difficulty the actual sizes if close to normal 8 10 12 increments for your sheeting drywall etc,Get professional help before you build to tell you what you can afford and do not go over budget make sure everything is done correctly so as not to have to go back and fix mistakes even an inch and a half error can cost thousands of dollars .Always use three quotes and if you can always purchase your own materials yet make sure they are on time and readily available for your trades for if they are not expect to be charged for the down time as well just be care full and be smart about it all know what you want how much you have and who is going to give you the best job
- Have your licensed professionals sit down with you, with the plans in front of you, and go over EVERY last detail. Then stick to your plans. Time and again the most expensive parts of any job are due to 1) changes in the plans, 2) misunderstanding what the customer wanted. Come by the sight, and help with clean up, make a coffee run, anything that might help save some time. If you're capable, ask the different tradesmen what (if any) things you could do yourself. I.E.- When our house was being built, I came by each night and gave it a sweeping and loaded trash into the dumpster. After completion I did all the interior painting.
