  1. You really only need three things: Reusable "gray" water. Install a system that reuses water from your sink and showers to water your lawn. That water is relatively clean, and certainly isn't harmful to you when used as irrigation water. This water can also be diverted to toilets instead of fresh, clean water. Alternative power, in the form of solar cells, or windmills. Supplemented by your local utility/power company - By the end of the year you should find that you put power back into the grid overall, and that the power company pays you! A compost heap, this allows you to recycle all of your organic trash, and preventing the need for more waste management. This acts as a great supplement to recycling to increase your ecological friendliness. Tiger Striped Dog MD
  2. Aside from the stuff mentioned above, you should look into the building materials and energy efficiency of the home. Straw bale construction is widely celebrated, but there are also concrete molds made from recycled Styrofoam that provide most of the same benefits. Look for designs with good insulation, passive use of solar energy and the like. You can get some good ideas by looking up the commercial building LEED codes.
